My friend is raising money by selling her old fandom stuff, including action figures. She has amazing stuff, at very low prices. So far my favorite is "Legolas with Dagger-Slashing and Arrow-Launching Actions" because the description just makes me giggle. Anyway, go! buy! I can vouch for thejennabides being painfully ethical: if you buy from her, you will get your figs, I'm sure of that.

Title: Every Little Thing She Does...Authors: unstealthy and msilverstar Pairing: Billy/Rachel Weisz Rating: NC-17 Warning: Roleplay, tables turned Feedback and concrit: yes, please! Email if you're shy. Disclaimer: This is entirely untrue, fiction, we made it all up. Summary: May 2005. Rachel and Billy don't know each other that well, and try something new. Notes: This is part of the cheerfully-kinky (mostly) push_pull_push universe, but can be read as a standalone. For all fics in this universe in chronological order, please see the Master List. ~
Billy hasn't known Rachel that long, just enough to stay over. When she comes out of her bathroom one morning dressed to the nines like that Anna Wintour or someone equally formidable, it takes him a moment to understand what he's seeing, and another to appreciate it. Rachel's hair is done in some sleek style, shining as neatly a a raven's wing. Her face is somehow more remote than usual, though it's her lovely smile, and Billy can never resist smiling back.
"Do you like this look?" Rachel enjoys dressing up, loves wearing high heels that make her feel more like the ideal height she wishes she was. She twirls and poses for Billy. "What do you think?"
"Oh, Ms. Weisz, you look fantastic!" She's so very tall. Billy doesn't particularly like her body encased in a suit, no matter how fashionable or tasteful. But the whole outfit, with the shoes that make her so tall, is stunning -- and he is stunned. It makes him want to play. "When will you be home, Ms. Weisz?" he goes on as the secretary or butler or whatever he's pretending to be now.
This has potential... | |

I'm not sure where this meme came from, but it's been all over my flist and I love it. The best kind of protest, what we would have called, in my childhood, a Teach-In. I'm not going to repeat the rules, but here I go. I give you one of the worst rulings ever: Dred Scott (1857), which held that: Africans residing in America, whether free or slave, could not become United States citizens. That means that not just those born in Africa, but also their descendants who were born in the United States, were denied the same human rights as all other "races". It also held that the United States Congress had no authority to prohibit slavery in federal territories, or free states to grant freedom to slaves who entered the states. So, state's rights were great, but not for Free States. Why? In an appeal to the strict constructionism much like that beloved of our right-wing-looney Supreme Court Justices (Scalia and his shadow, Thomas), the majority decided the drafters of the Constitution had viewed all African-Americans as: ...beings of an inferior order, and altogether unfit to associate with the white race, either in social or political relations, and so far inferior that they had no rights which the white man was bound to respect. That's disgusting. The ruling, IMNSHO, made the Civil War inevitable. The Slave States were were willing to revolt for the right of states to choose slavery over humanity. Dred Scott encouraged this, going so far pro-slavery as to make compromise impossible. That was back when the Republican Party had the moral high ground, they were the party of enfranchisement and liberty. Now, not so much. They want to dismantle the public school system so we can give vouchers for suburban private schools, they prosecute mostly African Americans for civil rights violations, they refused to raise the minimum wage for years... I can give details, if anyone is undecided, and is willing to listen to my version of the issues. But I have no interest in debating Republican True Believers, or libertarians, for that matter. Obama's a little conservative for me, but his take on ISSUES is pretty good. And that's honestly the only thing I care about.

Who left a pair of salt and pepper grinders at the last moot? They look rather Alice-in-Wonderland-ish, nifty! The mystery writer with the Italian policeman who loves his food is Donna Leon. Her Guido Brunetti is middle-aged and a bit conflicted, but his world is not completely corrupt, unlike Michael Dibdon's Aurelio Zen series. Via hanarobi: video of dolphins blowing bubble rings and playing with them. JUST what I needed to see, cheered me right up. And I just discovered a fabulous Doctor Who video, Handlebars, by flummery, to the song by Flobots. I don't know about their other songs, but that one really works for me. They're apparently "alternative hip-hop", so some rap with all kinds of music threaded through (they have a violinist!) and great lyrics. (I can't get their Flash-heavy site to load, and the guy on the front page looks like Elijah: I keep doing double-takes). They're also social activists and really quite darling. Many thanks to LofA for the link! Must go work on Arwen costume now: kidlet is persistent.

- Stove recommendations: our kenmore only lasted about ten years, which seems ridiculously short. We just want one that works: who likes their stove?
- Our cat got out and got fleas again. We used
Advantage Front Line last week, but he's got 'em again. What else can we do?
- Is it just me, or is there really no "edit" link on your own bookmarks in the delicious search results? It's driving me bonkers.
- I can't remember #4

Icon of Viggo and Elijah from a party after the New York premiere of Appaloosa. So many gorgeous photos lately, yay! Also, I highly recommend Disk Inventory X (Mac only), an excellent shareware program to clean up your hard disk. I cleared an additional 14 GB. Most of it was deleting all Garage Band folders, but still. I'll be donating, yis. - Tags:gips

We have a wedding to celebrate: Ruth and Nancy got married last Friday! So this moot we will have a little party to revel in the accomplishment.
So, this Sunday, Sept. 14, my house in Berkeley, 1 pm to 6ish, it will be lovely to see you all. You are all, (except Ruth and Nancy), invited to bring some snacks to share. Email me for directions, and I'm sure we can arrange some carpools or BART pickups.
See you then! | |

The Toronto International Film Festival is being wonderful to us this year! There's lots and lots of Viggo (click page links for lots more) promoting both Appaloosa and Good and looking fantastic. Dom has been at several premieres, not quite as gorgeous but he still has it. And Billy is due at the Stone of Destiny premiere gala on the 13th. I'm greedily hoping for Fellowship reunion pictures. *points at icon of Sean Bean and Viggo at TIFF in 2005*

Chuck Todd: I mean, is she really the most qualified woman they could have turned to?
Peggy Noonan: The most qualified? No. I think they went for this, excuse me, political bullshit about narratives and (inaudible) the picture....as they were caught on on an open mic. Thanks to zoniduck and icarusancalions for the evidence.

Title: All Together NowAuthors: msilverstar and unstealthyPairing: Billy/Rachel Weisz/Dom Rating: R Warning: threesome Feedback and concrit: yes, please! Email if you're shy. Disclaimer: This is entirely untrue, fiction, we made it all up. Summary: The three of them are fitting together better every day. Note: This is part of the cheerfully-kinky (mostly) push_pull_push AU in which there is no Ali at all, but lots of Dom/Billy, starting in New Zealand and going on until now. We've added Rachel Weisz to the mix as Billy's girlfriend, and Rachel/Dom and threesomes. But the timeline sticks quite closely to their public lives. There's lots of smut and bondage, submission, and light S&M; all driven, we hope, by the characters themselves. For all fics in this universe in chronological order, please see the Master List. cara_chapel took these great photos of Sean Astin at Dragon*con, earlier today (August 31, 2008). He was on a panel called "A Taste of Strawberries: Remembering the Shire". Click images for larger versions of these photos.

My Remix is woooonderful, thoughtful and sexy and gives me shivers in a very good way. There's a little bit of bondage and stuff, but it's not hard-core at all, really more about character than kinky sex. From What You Do, Because of You, Dom/Orlando, amazing! I sympathize with all my SGA-loving friends: they shouldn't oughta cancel your show! telesilla is having The Second International Blanket Fort Day for group hugs and commiseration. We watched Ocean's Eleven the other night. Didn't do much for me, but Andy Garcia was gorgeous. There's an interesting fanfic and children's literature survey. We now have corn-based cat litter and an amazing cat brush, The Furminator! (Wot, you think "cats" is not a fandom? I beg to differ.)

The new LOTR RPS remix stories are up! You can use the listing by pairing or just the 2008 tag. For earlier years, my new Remix web site is remix.lotrips.org, which also explains all about the origins and rules of Remix. (First rule: you can and should talk about remix.) OMG, I am so lucky that a) my family was away yesterday and I could spend time formatting the stories for posting and b) feelforfaith is a fabulous person to work with. Though my left-hand trackball broke in the middle of the whole thing, and it slowed me down a lot, I'm not so used to mice any more. Anyway, stories are up and mostly excellent, authors are not yet revealed, lots of pairings, come read! I'll be away tomorrow, see you all on Tuesday. PS: the icon is ironic, mostly

Happy Birthday to too_shy and sandelwood You've both had rough years and I hope this next one will be fabulous! Cat GIP (he's curled up on the rug, at yet another spot just off the central medallion) And a question, since I now live with a cat, We have been using some of the clay litter, which is way better engineered than last time I had cats, in the 80s. It doesn't smell and is easy get the pee and poop out of. But apparently, it's a big eco problem, despoiling the landscape and such. I tried some pine pellets but realized our little rake scoop thing has too-small openings. So I ask you, flist, what kind of environmentally responsible cat litter should we buy?

Title: Can't Keep From Talking Authors: msilverstar and unstealthyPairing: Billy Boyd/Dom Monaghan Rating: NC-17 Warning: Bondage and gagging Feedback and concrit: yes, please! Email if you're shy. Disclaimer: This is entirely untrue, fiction, we made it all up. Summary: Dom's cheeky and chatty, so Billy suggests a way to keep him quiet. Part of the push_pull_push universe. Am back
It was really really hot and my brain melts about 90 degrees F.
Read about 7 books in 5 days. Being careful about choosing to take only good writing, I actually enjoyed them.
Swam, hiked, chatted, slept, sat, read, talked to my kids.
Did not open my computer once, much less drive to find WiFi. This is a victory.
I am so very glad to be home. *hugs everyone*

Have a lovely time, you all, see you on Thursday afternoon!

Collective intelligence: people filled in a form to say how much is shook near them, and out comes a map. USGS was doing mashups before there WAS a google maps. I'm not hot-linking to the dynamic updating one. You can go see the updated map or .report your own experiences. I always check there first, I think it's amazing. For some reason, this is my earthquake icon.

lilithlotr has tickets for sale: 2 tickets at will call for Warped in Cincinnati on Wednesday. I can throw in one of the Warped 2008 Compilation CDs, if you need it. Because of the uncertainty of will call tickets (Will they actually be there? You never know for sure until they hand them to you) I'm only asking for $30 for the pair, which is less than the cost of one ticket.
2 tickets for Warped in Indianapolis on Thursday. I have Music Saves Lives VIP vouchers to throw in with these. $60 cash for the pair, must meet me before doors on Thursday at the venue. Send her an lj message or email for the tickets, not me. Also, I am so proud of myself, I got off my ass and made something tasty and healthy: ( Tomato & bean salad )

( dr. horrible act 3 spoilers )I was going to say, "what if someone made an action story with a woman as the protagonist?" but they did and that was Buffy, and it was a pop culture hit, why not more?ETA: http://www.drhorrible.com/, free until 12 midnight (probably Pacific daylight time, GMT -7). Hobbit spam! Screenshots from the trilogy: all Hobbits, all the time. Great captions cracked me up, but the pictures made me all nostalgic. I'm reading a very satisfying Dom/Billy WIP Boston by eff_reality. And I don't just say that because I suggested the name. It's Billy the film history graduate student, and Dom, the mostly-cheerful prostitute, but it plays with the conventions and there are missed connections and it avoids a lot of romantic clichés. ( omg bandfic? me? well, just these two AUs )Also, I'm sorry that the feed msil_fanfic_rec (LJ) and msil_delicious (IJ) kinda went crazy, and started sending out tag links, alphabetically. It's del.icio.us, and I don't know how to keep it from happening again :-(

LJ management is offering to restart Basic Accounts. But they want people to see the ads (particularly annoying for communities). And I'm pretty sure will apply to all Basic accounts, even ones that were made before the changeover. their "proposals":. Proposal 1: Advertising would be displayed to visitors who are not logged in to LiveJournal at the time when they are looking at Basic Account journals and communities.
Proposal 2: Advertising would be displayed to logged-in Basic Account users when viewing application pages - pages which are not part of a community, a user's journal, profile or friends page (e.g. Update page, Edit Entries page, Manage Tags page).
Proposal 3a: Advertising would be shown to logged-in Basic Account users when viewing a journal which they have not friended or community they are not watching (e.g. if you friend a Basic journal, you do not see advertising; mutual friending is not required to avoid advertising).
Proposal 3b: Advertising would be shown to logged-in Basic Account users when viewing a journal of which they are not a mutual friend or a community of which they are not a member (e.g. if you friend a journal and they do not friend you, or if you watch a community but are not a member, you will see advertising; if you do become mutual friends or a member of a community, then you will no longer see advertising in that journal or community). Thrilling. - Tags:lj

I was so tired today I had two naps, the second one featuring a complicated dream eco-adventure involving nefarious conspiracies and polluted water. Probably because I watched The Constant Gardener the other day. Rachel Weisz and especially Ralph Fiennes were excellent in it, though I'd read the book so knew the plot already, but the acting and the visuals were stunning. blythely, the books arrived safely, thank you so much! If you don't tell me what you want from the US, I'll be forced to guess, and that could be disastrous... My kidlet is massively in love with the song "The City of New Orleans" and wants to perform it karaoke-style. I don't even know where to start looking for something like that. Help?

Title: "Don't Use Your Hands Yet" Authors: msilverstar and unstealthyPairing: Billy/Rachel Weisz/Dom Rating: NC-17 Disclaimer: This is completely false, not true, we made it up Summary: Playing with bondage, hand-feeding, teasing, and cheerful sex. Note: For all fics in this universe in chronological order, please see the Master List. 2007, March, LA after the ORC convention

I hope it will be back to foggy by Sunday. In any case, my house stays pretty cool until 5ish, so earlier will probably be better. We could always decamp to the back yard if it's too hot inside. The particulars: - my house in Berkeley (send email to ms at msilverstar.com if you need directions)
- plenty of parking, one flat mile from BART
- 1 to 6ish on Sunday, July 13
- bring your lovely selves and if possible, a little something snackish
See you then! ETA: thanks to asknosecrets for telling me about my date mistake.

At the library, I found Four queens : the Provençal sisters who ruled Europe, which I at first thought was historical fiction, but no, it's real history, though unfortunately the kind without footnotes. Oh the pleasures of reading about familiar events from a new perspective. Troubadours! Teenage brides! Savoy! Feckless kings of England! Manipulating Dowager Queens of France! Historical fiction makes me sad these days, because I'm all too aware that there are no happily ever afters, but I don't feel so personally involved with history. Nice weather today, next week is supposed to be hot and icky. I'm stocking up on ice cream.

Happy US Independence -- which was a good and noble event, full of high ideals that we can all strive to live up to. I've got watermelon, sunflower seeds, beer (well, Newcastle Brown Ale), a world-accessible Doctor Who teaser, and the house to myself. I intend to watch embarrassing videos, like "How To Look Good Naked" and write crack!fic with a friend. How is your Friday (or Saturday) going?
|
The wedding was preceded by a > 100 F / 37 C heat wave, a wild fire about five miles from the house, a thunderstorm, and hail (well, really a small bout of frozen rain). The ceremony itself was graced by sun and light breezes, and was lovely.
Both women were radiant: they said they were married four years ago in SF, which was voided, and again now. And they're "going to keep getting married until it sticks, everywhere!" It made me cry a little: I'm all for love, in all its possibilities.

Title: "All You Have To Do Is Ask" Authors: unstealthy and msilverstar Pairing: Dominic Monaghan/Billy Boyd Rating: NC-17 Disclaimer: This is completely false, not true, we made it up Summary: Dom finds one of Billy's hard limits, which is not as kinky as it might be. It's lotrips_remix time again, and I hope many of you will play. It's sometimes a big stretch, but can be really exciting, going outside not just your own story universes, but into someone else's. amygirl posted a really fun Sean Bean Timeline, with pictures starting in 1983, both theatre and films. Great article by Missy Merlin: Your Friends Are Not Watching the Same Show You Are (And That's OK) - via kaydeefalls post about it. I watch so much more TV now that I'm in fandom than I did before. It's fun to squee with friends and be part of the excitement, more than the shows themselves. I like the "Donna Noble & Doctor Banter Show" as well as the "David Tennant Chews the Scenery Show", and I quite enjoyed season four of the "How Weird Can That Island Get? Show", and I wish there were more episodes of the "Cuddy Kicks Ass Show". In more David Tennant fannishness, Nina Sosanya will be playing Rosaline in Love's Labour's Lost! (via antigone921). She was a great Bellino to David's Casanova, and is gorgeous, so Rosaline to his Berowne could be electric. For those who aren't familiar with the play, Rosaline is the leading female role, and there is lots of clever verbal fencing between the two characters. I expect it will be fabulous! I realized I had only one Billy icon and one Billy/Dom, so have brought back the one on this post (Billy in Santa Barbara, February 2004, made by the lovely and talented kiltsandlollies), a gorgeous hand one, from the Wellington ROTK press conference by mrkinch, and a Berlin ROTK premiere one that is so fuzzy, I must have made it (am a pathetic icon maker), but I kinda like the softness of it. &

The election is for what I suspect is a largely symbolic seat on the LJ Advisory Board, but symbols matter. fandom_votes has lots of info on why voting for a fandom-oriented candidate is a good idea, and where the various candidates are in fandom. metafandom has many links to posts on the topic. I'm voting first for rm, who I've seen while wandering friendsfriends and is generally both rational and insightful. My second choice is vichan who founded fandom_counts, and my third is legomymalfoy who has a lot of fandom endorsers and a good platform. OTOH, I very much dislike jameth who is a poster of horrible blinking animations (which completely disqualifies him in my book) and tends to slag off fandom (ditto). VOTE before May 29! Vote for three different people: second and third choices count during runoffs. Vote!
