12:53p Just frickin' lovely
Dear PhD,
Please work on timing your experiments so that PostDoc doesn't throw a shitfit trying to fix your mistake: I know that the vaccuum pumps are, in theory, interchangeable, but maybe you should've checked before hooking it up, because we now have one working pump out of three, a completely inexcuseable scenario given how busy that lab can get.
As far as timing goes: you really need to sit down with your protege and hash out a better plan for your massive experiments (240+ tubes, total). There is no reason why the old vaccuum pump should have overheated to the point of not working. Granted, the thing was a POS to begin with, but had you divided the work better and done two sessions in one day then it wouldn't have blown up in your face like that and I wouldn't have had a panic attack wondering why the thing wasn't working.
Thirdly, there is no reason why you need to let the vaccuum run that long. I get just as many filters out of it as you do in maybe 1/8 of the time. And my results are consistent and give lovely curves (to the point where I'm starting to be afraid that someone will accuse me of fabricating it). Letting the vaccuum run that long will only burn out the pump that we've got now, except when this one craps out there won't be a backup (knowing how long it can take for new equipment to be approved, ordered, and shipped).
Love, The technician with too many experiments on that machine to risk it being broken.

9:41p RTA help
I've got a broken down car on the side of the interstate (two bad tires, yay!). I have to be at work at 9:00 tomorrow morning and I'm trying to figure out how to get from Uptown to Kenner on the RTA bus I've figured out that I need to be on the Kenner Loop, but I don't know how to get there from New Orleans. Help, please!!! I live right off of the St Charles Streetcar line. I've been on the website, but I'm too stupid to understand it, I guess.

9:09p Coming Home
Well after 10 months, Lafayette is turning out to be a total bust and a bad decision both romatically and career wise. Time to come home before I find myself homeless. Looking for a restaurant management position and a cheap place to live. Any and all advice will be appreciated.

6:25p TP Archives
Hey, there was a post here awhile ago, before all this Gustav stuff, about how to search the Times Picayune Archives via the library's website. Does anyone know what section of the library website one can access the Times Picayune Archives? A link?
Thanks!

2:42p I soooo have no clue...
I posted this here because... it has to do with biology (professors and research), and because there's some chance others here have had this happen to them or have been in the reverse situation.
Okay, so I visited a professor at a nearby university and asked if I could do research in his lab. He's a neurobiology/neuroscience professor. He showed me around his lab, asked me if I still wanted to do it (to which I replied yes), then told me that when I'm ready to start, to email him. Seemed like a nice guy...
This was in early August. So I got to early September and emailed him to ask if I could start soon. No answer. I emailed about ten days later and asked a similar question, thinking maybe he hadn't gotten the first email or something happened, etc. Still no answer. I'm not sure if the emails aren't getting through or if something's up over there... but what do I do next? I figure there are some things I should and shouldn't do here, and he's essentially doing me a favor (I'm not getting credit; I'm just getting experience). I thought that just going over there to see what's up might not be the best idea, but I can't seem to get in touch other ways (email/phone).
Anyway, tia.

2:05p On Vox: Random thoughts and things...
First, I'm finally feeling mostly like myself again. Not completely back to normal but a lot closer, and at least operating under mostly normal circumstances...aka not lying in bed all day, on a clear liquid diet. Finally eating solids again (OH how I missed food). Other news, somehow I haven't mentioned that Carrie and Stephen's website is up and active: http://www.transformationsbycarrie.com. My video is at the bottom, client pictures are at the bottom and in the testimony section. If your bored or interested in what they do, check it out. Other randomness, I got some new running shoes today, wasn't planning on it. I don't need them yet, but the store is closing. (Shoemaker's Inn in San Antonio, TX locally owned, owner is retiring and just closing up shop) Most shoes are 40% and more off, New Balance are 25% off, still good deals. But I went to check out the New Balance site, and the shoe I got is featured, but also I noticed their current marketing plan. And I like it!! It's about a "Love/Hate" relationship with running mostly. Little facts and quotes about running all over the place, amused me enough to talk about it. For those curious I got the 1224 in pink/silver, on sale, cheaper than the price at their online store. :-D YAY. But it's making me revisit, and I've been thinking about, and Stephen also wants me to.....run. I do enjoy running sometimes when the weather isn't too hot outside. Much more than the treadmill, I know the hardest part is going out the door. And I have accumulated a few cool running "toys," a arm wallet/cell phone holder, shoes, ipod shuffle (if I get into I'll reward myself with a nano and the nike+ kit) Well I'm off to enjoy being able to move around, etc. Enjoy your day!!!

11:57a Slate Frames
Long ago and far away .....
On one of the Embroidery Lists that I'm on, somebody had made a slate frame (or gotten their beloved to make a slate frame) and had posted plans.
Does that ring a bell with anybody?
I printed them out, but cant find them. Yeah, well. I know. They're in one of *those* boxes, I"m sure. But I got papers to grade today .....

11:47p Out of curiousity.
Hello all, I am a second year university student (UBC) hoping to get into vet school in the near future. I have some questions for people who've gotten into vet school, mainly just for curiosity's sake...
First of all, did you complete your undergraduate degree before going into vet school? If so, did you find that doing so helped you in vet school? If not, did you wish that you had, or were you glad that you had a couple years less school?
Also, do you or anyone you know get in with a mid-70s average? I know that most schools say that they'll consider anyone with an above-70 average but I'm just curious whether they'll actually accept people with that kind of grades... especially since it's so competitive.
And finally how much of what you learned in your undergrad did you actually use in vet school? Especially in courses like physics, math, physical chemistry... I know they're required (at least in Canada) but I don't have the greatest understanding of all the material covered in those courses, so I'm wondering whether that would affect me in vet school (if I even get in!).
Thanks to anyone who can answer any of these questions!

9:50p squeak.
Looks like at least one mouse took the opportunity to make himself cozy in our evacuated shotgun double. I've never had mouse trouble before- I always figured a 60 pound husky made a decent pest deterrent. (Of course, now that there's been an invasion, my dog is uninterested in taking care of the problem herself.)
Anyone know how much an exterminator would cost? I guess I should just get spring traps myself? Suggestions?
