05:21 pm - The Washer has Landed
For about the last -- oh, at least six months or more -- our washing machine has been attempting lift-off into orbit. It started, as most things do, with the spin cycle.

10:51 pm - Threat Condition: Red

So, I'm taking a flight tomorrow morning and I decide to check out the TSA's list of things that one cannot take in one's carryon luggage.

Which inspired the following brief IM conversation:

mrsveteran: I am pissed that I cannot take my tear gas and ice axe on the plane with me.
mrsveteran: Also, my meat cleaver.
mrsveteran: WTF am I going to do without my meat cleaver?
     sushirob: those cruel bastards
mrsveteran: Bastards.
mrsveteran: WTF? And no cricket bats or hockey sticks???
mrsveteran: NO SPEAR GUNS???
mrsveteran: What is this, Communist Russia??
sushirob: what if you come against sharks with frickin' lasers on their head?
mrsveteran: No shit.
mrsveteran: Not even a measly chainsaw, for fuck's sake.
mrsveteran: Jesus.

Yup, sorry, that's all I've got. Been ill, then my Dad was ill, then me again, and between doctors and work and hospitals and what-have-you, I have not had time to blog Teh Funnay(tm).

Or even Teh Not-So-Funnay(tm).

But I'll be back, dammit! I will!

We now return you to your regularly scheduled friends list, already in progress.

08:53 pm - The Angry Woman Playlist
I have a playlist in iTunes I call "Angry Woman." The name is a bit of a misnomer -- it started out being songs by Alanis Morissette and Storm Large and other such artists who have songs that seem ... well ... angry. Over time, however, it's more evolved to a point where the "Angry Woman" applied to me more than to any of the artists or their songs. (To be quite accurate, I should probably change the name to "Depressed, Angry, or Otherwise Somewhat Dissatisfied with the State of Life In General Woman," but iTunes won't let me, so "Angry Woman" it remains.)

At any rate, these are songs that I find validating, empowering, or just otherwise amusing to listen to when I'm down. I was looking for additions to this playlist today on iTunes, where I found a lovely Cranberries' version of Fleetwood Mac's "Go Your Own Way," and Queen's "Who Wants to Live Forever."

Then I remembered that I still had free downloads available at emusic.com, so I went there to try to find Limp Bizkit's "Break Stuff." Sadly, they only had a tribute version, however, they also had what led to the following IM conversation, which I now present for your amusement because I'm too lazy to write a real blog entry for today:

03:52 am - 3:52 AM
Why is there never anyone around to talk to at 3:52 AM?

Or 3am.

Or 2am, for that matter.

I find this to be a serious drawback to civilized society, and am somewhat dissatisfied with the whole early-early-early-morning conversation situation.

That is all.

[Edited to add: Yes, I know, several of you have said "call anytime even if it's in the middle of the night," but I'm not sure I could make myself do that unless it were an emergency. :-)]

03:40 pm - AIEEE!
You ever have one of those days where you feel like you're running after something that, no matter how fast you run, stays *just* a teensy bit ahead of you?

Today is one of those days. I just catch up with email and I get six more. (And that's just the WORK email -- forget personal email. Not gonna happen today.) I just get done putting out a fire and TEN MORE pop up!

And I'm still trying to figure out how the hell tomorrow is going to work since I have something like four things that are scheduled so tightly together that it's going to involve either the danger of a speeding ticket or some pretty fine timing.

Therefore, in light of the above, I hereby declare today, November 13th, National "Holy Christ on a Freakin' Wheat-thin, SLOW DOWN, WORLD!!!" Day, or "AIEEE Day" for short.

Celebrate as appropriate.

07:19 pm - My day off
All I want to say is that after 11 years working for the same company (off and on, sort of, long story), and as a veteran, it's about DAMN time they gave me Veteran's Day off.

(Although I did almost spend it getting lost in the snowy mountains and forests of Northern Nevada.)

That is all.

Um ...

Well, except thanks again to everyone currently or formerly serving their country. You do a lot for very little thanks.

06:55 pm - Veterans' Day
In light of the hundreds, if not thousands of stories of how returning veterans (often injured, physically or psychologically) are being treated, I thought that Veterans' Day might be a good time to mention that it's all very well and good to run about with your yellow "support the troops" banner on your SUV, but mightn't it be a bit more supportive to ensure decent medical treatment and the benefits earned by these veterans?

Those who have fought and died have done so for an ideal. I've said it before and I'll say it again: soldiers don't choose the war, they choose to serve their country. Presidents and Congresses and Parliaments and Legislators choose the war and where to send our young women and young men to fight and die.

Shame on those leaders for betraying our soldiers by not living up to their end of the bargain when our people come back broken and torn mentally and physically.

Shame on those leaders for using our soldiers like toys for their own selfish agendas.

Shame on those leaders for promising better benefits for veterans to the press and silently voting against them in session.

This bit of Kipling seems very apropos this year:

You talk o' better food for us, an' schools, an' fires an' all:
We'll wait for extry rations if you treat us rational.
Don't mess about the cook-room slops, but prove it to our face
The Widow's Uniform is not the soldier-man's disgrace.

For it's Tommy this, an' Tommy that, an' "Chuck him out, the brute!"
But it's "Saviour of 'is country," when the guns begin to shoot;
An' it's Tommy this, an' Tommy that, an' anything you please;
But Tommy ain't a bloomin' fool - you bet that Tommy sees!

Thank you, veterans, for your service to your country. I'm sorry that your country too often does not return the favor to you.

05:08 pm - Lessons Learned
1. Soldering irons are hot.

2. I mean, really hot. Like, "burn paper" hot.

3. Solder doesn't stick to glass very well.

4. Glass gets really hot when you're trying to melt a bunch of solder all over it.

5. Solder is kinda cool, but I don't think it's going to replace wire-wrapping anytime soon.

6. At least I hope not.

7. Anyone got any bandaids and some burn cream?

8. Ow.
