Jul. 18th, 2008 @ 11:08 am The Dark Knight
Last night we got to see The Dark Knight a few hours early courtesy of some vendors at the conference I'm attending. I enjoyed it immensely. It really was better than your standard summer movie comic book adaptation pablum, and yes, Heath Ledger showed he would have been an amazing actor with a great career.

But the plot can be summed up thusly:

Jun. 23rd, 2008 @ 07:40 pm George Carlin

Current Mood: nostalgic
What a loss. An incredible talent, a hardworking actor/comedian/writer/etc. There's so many things to remember him for--his work with Kevin Smith (playing a cardinal in Dogma, his narration on Shining Time Station (it's a riot when the kid watches some of them from the library, and you hear Carlin's voice and he isn't swearing), but the best was the stand-up, brutal, crude, and yet so humane and intelligent at the same time.

Surprisingly, Carlin was popular in our family. Mostly due to his appearances with Johnny Carson on The Tonight Show which of course were always squeaky-clean, and usually nothing more his vamps on language. I assume my mom knew he could work blue, which makes my favorite George Carlin memory all the more puzzling.

How do you watch Carlin with your mother? )

May. 24th, 2008 @ 09:11 pm Salsa del Muerte
Some of you know I frequently enjoy spicy foods. Some have tasted my "Salsa Del Muerte" (and yes, I know it's grammatically incorrect, but that's where the funny comes from) which is basically salsa with as many habanero peppers as I can stand to put in it, along with the tomatoes, onions, cilantro, a bit of garlic, lime juice and salt.. This is especially fun when you whizz up the food processor and basically fill the house with noxious gases. And also when you get some on your cuticles, and you have a phantom burn at random times for several weeks afterwards. But man, is it good.

Current Mood: nostalgic
Some of you may know that Dr. Ashley Carter, director of RISE and adjunct professor of physics at Drew passed away last month. Today was his memorial service at Drew, which was well attended by faculty, staff, students, and alumni, as well as Ash's family. This is not surprising if you ever met Ash--one of the nicest, most decent people I have ever met.

Current Music: Joe Jackson singing Abba in my head
Went to see Joe again with [info]yesthattom at the Apollo Theater. Before that I got the tour of the NYC Google office which was neat. Imagine a warehouse with brightly colored carpet, cubicles, and tons of computer equipment everywhere and you get the picture. Also, in their game room they had a set of electronic drums just like the ones Joe's drummer Dave Houghton plays.

The show itself was great--the sound was better than Red Bank, Joe's voice was more solid, and the song mix was good. They played Abba's "Knowing Me, Knowing You" which was really good (and Joe said "probably the whitest thing ever played here"). Also good seeing [info]yesthattom and catching up.

Waiting for Joe Jackson to start here at the Count Basie Theatre in Red Bank, NJ. I realized the last time I was here was in 1994 also to see Joe Jackson. There's netting up near the ceiling, not for acoustics but to catch pieces of falling plaster. Cool. They also have a section of wall painted, I assume, as it used to be instead of all white like the rest of the theatre. The seats are new

This is a cool theater, I'm 14 rows back, center orchestra. Nice sound. Opening band was Mutlu, a guy from Philly with a guitar, and another guy with a guitar. Not bad.

Now they're doing that "must look busy setting thing up even though we did so hours ago" thing.

I'm one of the younger people here, although not by much.

Should be any minute now. Guess I should put the damn Blackberry away.

Mar. 5th, 2008 @ 10:44 pm An exciting new computer
I got to see a Lenovo ThinkPad X300 today. And use it for a few minutes. It's more beautiful than I could have imagined. And light, and sleek. The other thing was it was dead silent. I think it has a fan but I sure couldn't hear it, and of course the SSD means no hard drive noise.

If you're in the mood to spend $2600 on a laptop, and aren't committed to a MacBook Air--say, you really like an optical drive, 3 USB ports, and wired Ethernet--I recommend the X300 without hesitation.

Mar. 2nd, 2008 @ 10:58 am Stupid 21st century communications options
I'm trying to figure out the relative cost/benefit analyses of various changes in our phone, TV, and Internet services. I'm currently paying about $150/mo for all three, and figure I can do better with any one of a number of various options. However, it is extremely difficult to figure out what actual stuff will actually cost, between promotional offers, rebates, taxes, charges (notably the FCC Subscriber Line Charge, which sounds like a tax but isn't, so our $8.95 Verizon plan really costs $15.45, not including Caller ID and taxes). Also there's the pesky issue of equipment--I currently have 2 DirecTiVos, which is their own issue in and of itself, but they're also hacked and networked, and as crazy as it sounds, the ability to record multiple shows on multiple devices is now a requirement in our household (especially the feature of starting a show downstairs and finishing it upstairs) and I think that means only a TiVo for the time being. Both Cablevision and FIOS support CableCard now, so I can use TivoHDs with both of them, but that involves new TiVo subscriptions, CableCard rentals, and of course buying the Tivos themselves. I think when I run it even a $90/mo triple play from either Cablevision or Verizon may just offset the additional equipment and TiVo fees for the contract term. Of course then at least I can say I'm getting better service and new equipment for the same price, and that's worth something.

Probably the simplest way I can save a little money with a minimal change in services is to sign up for Vonage. Even the $15/mo plan is sufficient--we don't make 500 minutes of calls a month, and then there's better features and stuff anyway. My question to those Vonage subscribers out there, is when they say $15/mo (or $24.99/month) is that really what you pay, or are there other taxes and fees? I need to know to make a valid comparison.

I will say, this generally sucks. I think the best option is to continue with what I have, even if I could save a few bucks, because the transition costs will get me down, not to mention the hassle and aggravation. Then again, I'd like to get, say, HDTV service, and modern TiVo features.

Feb. 28th, 2008 @ 11:21 pm Preparing for a conference
So, as some of you may know, I'm speaking at BrainShare again (I think my fifth year, which in some ways makes absolutely no sense, but if they keep letting me do it, I'll keep doing it.) I turned in the final drafts of my talks this week, and am trying to get ready.

One of the issues I have is that my now 2-year-old laptop's battery was reduced in capacity. So I bought a new one, but I bought the extra large laptop battery, so I have over 5 hours of battery life now. Better than the two I was getting.

Also, I bought pants. I need black or khaki pants to present (one of the precious BrainShare perks are the speaker shirts, a polo or button-down shirt.) and I have some but I bought more since they're kind of wearing out.

And I got a new suitcase for Christmas.

So, laptop battery, suitcase, pants. Salt Lake City, here we come!

Feb. 18th, 2008 @ 09:29 pm Guilty pleasure
Last night, we watched Knight Rider.

Now, it'd be easy to blame this one on the wife, and say it was her idea, and while she certainly was interested, I must admit this was something I wanted to see as well. The original series was basically ideal for the 13 year old sci-fi geek boy, and I always liked it.

The new one did a really nice job updating the story and technology while maintaining the spirit of the original. Val Kilmer did a good job as K.I.T.T. although I missed Will Arnett who was the originally planned actor--and I think I heard his voice in one of the commercial break voiceovers. (And it would have been cool if William Daniels had done it, but we can't have it all.) And legitimacy was guaranteed with a cameo appearance by the Hoff himself as Michael Knight.

The strangest thing about the show is that it was a 2 hour long Ford ad. I think all the commercials were Ford, K.I.T.T. is a Shelby Cobra (Mustang), and most of the other cars were Fords, except for the bad guys' SUV which is clearly a GMC Suburban, made even more obvious by the removal of the grille emblem. The SUV is destroyed in an inertia-defying crash with K.I.T.T.

I guess there was talk of a series--it might actually be fun, although they might have a hard time keeping it up week after week. The movie, however, was amusing, mindless fun.

Breaking Bad.

In his autobiography Palm Sunday, Kurt Vonnegut talks of his rejected masters thesis in anthropology. In it, he defined a method for charting the overall emotional state of a story along a time axis. If good things happened to the characters, the line would be positive; bad things, negative. He charted various stories and tried to draw conclusions. He was excited that the stories of Cinderella and Jesus charted the same.

Kafka's "The Metamorphosis" started at zero and then quickly trailed off to minus infinity. That's what I thought of as I saw Walter White, high school chemistry teach, celebrate his 50th birthday to the news he has terminal lung cancer despite never smoking. He's working in a car wash to make ends meet, his wife is pregnant, and high schooler Walt Jr. has cerebral palsy. Walt's brother-in-law is a DEA agent, and during a ride-along, sees a former student escape from a window. He lets him go, and later determines he'll get rich by making and selling crystal meth with him.

I figured I'd like this show--I was a big fan of Bryan Cranston in "Malcolm In The Middle". But this show is on a completely different level. So far the first two episodes have been some incredible absurdist comedy, and the brilliant plan to sell drugs has taken a dramatic detour.

You can watch the first two episodes online, and watch the third one this weekend. You'd especially like it if you know someone who's a chemistry teacher (I'm talking to you, [info]yesthattom.)
