the house is painted dark, chocolaty brown again. it flaked off like the waxy shell of a dairy queen dipped cone to reveal wood siding underneath. wood is not as appealing as my usual smooth vanilla on a cake cone. still reading underworld by delillo and carrying around three calendars for different parts of life. made another one this morning. an october project journal i guess. the lines are nice and straight this time b/c i ran the pen down the edge of an envelope. not my predictable squiggly rivers. there's a crack in the hallway window but the porch light is on. started putting milk in my coffee and wondering about friends in other states. potato pancakes and stripes. silver rings and pennies on sidewalks. a red wagon with a rabbit named thumper poised to jump, the metal handle clasped in seven-year-old palms. black plastic big wheels skidding down driveways. where are papa's war albums? call logs and decisions, cemeteries and menus, pink paint and embroidery thread. how will i poke so many holes without making my fingers bleed? change the water in the vase. two bouquets of flowers in honor of being sick; one for the dresser, one for the table. eighty six years old. fifty four years old. thirty five years old. thirty three. thirty soon. sorting through squares.

| a summery summer comes to an end |
[Sep. 7th, 2006|09:51 pm] |
This summer was the first in a long string that actually felt like a real summer. And I'm not referencing the weather. I'm talking about the activities that filled my precious, hot days. The entire season was truly enjoyable. There was less time spent in my sweat shop and more time spent floating in lakes. Summer became a priority and that felt good. In fact, it kind of became another part time job. Otherwise, how could I have fit it all in? Lakes, road trips, bbq's, kickball, swimming, floating, A&W ice cream floats, hot dogs, northern Michigan, exploring, Mackinac Island, weddings, drive-in movies, roof climbing, picnics, bike riding, outdoor drinking, row boat rowing, and fiction reading. Yeah, yeah, as a result of devoting a bunch of time to enjoying summer to its fullest, my productivity level went down. But, you know, it was totally worth it. The month of September came without the "Sunday night" anxiety that usually plagues me starting in mid-August. September 1st came and went and if I hadn't been visiting my sister's second grade classroom and spotted the date scrawled in her familiar, un-teacherly handwriting on the chalk board, I strangely, wouldn't have noticed. I'm ready for Autumn. I've been pleased with the cool, lengthening nights. And that feels good. Like a deep sigh of relief.
My favorite things about this summer:
Forth of July weekend on Mackinac Island with 4 of my oldest friends. And when I say "old friends", I mean we met when we were 5 and 6.
A few very fruitful Detroit outings. The most notable included polaroiding as the orange sun sank low in the sky, Disneyland Hamtramck, wine, southern food and delightful company.
Being on a championship winning kickball team. Our team got a giant trophy with an eagle on top and then gloriously ran it around the bases waving it in the air.
Taking two different trips north to Green Lake. I was able to spend a some really relaxing days and nights with my parents and my brother who was in from NYC.
Watching two of my good friends get married to really quality guys. Weddings can actually be enjoyable when what's happening seems right.
Driving to Atlanta to spend some quality time with my sister. I reconnected with second grade, ate some really good southern food and went to some great bars. It was tough parting with her again but Tennessee and Kentucky make for nice driving.
I intended to write about all of the website updates that just took place but clearly my mind is wandering and I'd rather think/write about the last three months. My eyes are about to fall out so I'll website talk for another day. But yeah, it's finally updated so check it out. |

[Jul. 20th, 2006|04:59 pm] |
The Shadow Art Fair was a giant success! Thank you, thank you to everyone who came out to see us in Ypsi. If you care to read a full account, do so here I'm far to hot right now to sit here typing much more.
One more show to do on August 5th and then I will update the shop. It has been far too long but I just haven't had the time to go through the whole update process in the midst of show preparations. Soon though, I promise.

I went to NYC again last month - this time for vacation. As always, it was delightful. Here are a few pictures. I also made some nice polaroids but haven't scanned them yet. Perhaps I'll share them later.
Highlights included: My brother, uncle, Wendy, Sarah, Coney Island, randomly running into Max, sitting in my uncle's lovely garden, roof-top drinks, grilled green beans, a thunderstorm in the park, tartuffo, a ferris wheel and a wonderful, unexpected list of little places to explore.

| maybe it's the weather |
[May. 14th, 2006|08:01 pm] |
My o my. It has been a long time. April slipped by very quickly.
I'm sitting on my front porch observing a thunderstorm and also the internets. It has been raining for so many days I can't remember when it started. Before water began falling non-stop, summer arrived early - for a few weeks. It was delightful.
On the business front, I've been plugging away at more knit shirts. I'm happy with how they're turning out so far. They come complete with my own take on keyholes. I need to get a new digital camera and as soon as I do, the shirts will be in the shop.
Last weekend I went to Chicago to take a certification exam and visit some of my lady friends. One of them couldn't be there (I missed you Em!) so I did a lot of hanging out with Lauren. She goes down in my personal history as the second friend I ever met (second only to Todd). Anyway, we had a pretty relaxing weekend (aside from the exam of course) that involved wandering in the sunshine, coffee, tea and cookies, pedicures, lots of talking, mexican food, a lot of other food, and a bizarre but very fun night out. We'll leave it at that. On my way out of town, I stopped in Chinatown to do some exploring. I live for Chinatowns and hadn't been to Chicago's before. I wandered in and out of shops, bought a few gifts, and splurged on a lucky money cat. Before getting in the car for what turned into a nightmarish drive home, I filled up on noodles - mmm. It was a wonderful way to conclude my stay in Chicago. Yay noodles.
So far my Spring and Summer time plans (other than working) are:
Kickball (yep, you heard me : I joined a kickball team! And I love it.) Having the exterior of my house painted NYC Outdoor dining A June wedding (what to wear. what to wear?) The Shadow Art Fair Mackinac Island The Detroit Urban Craft Fair An August wedding |

| question about hotel book? |
[Mar. 25th, 2006|11:57 am] |
Some time ago, someone on my friends list posted a link or an image or maybe just some words about a book that lists and describes really neat hotels in the US. Can anyone point me in the direction of that book or magazine or whatever it was? Way to be vague, huh?
Thanks!!! |

| today was a good one |
[Mar. 22nd, 2006|10:17 pm] |
My day started out great b/c I got to have breakfast with Susanne. My day ended well because I went to an evening yoga class. The bulk of the middle of my day was spent sewing and getting a bunch of stuff done - yay! I took a break for lunch and topped it off with a giant homemade mocha.
Here are a few things I came up with today:

I am particularly happy with the coral, dark green and blue top because it incorporates some of the colors from the palette I'm planning on using for Fall. I have a difficult time thinking this far ahead but I'm trying to turn over a new leaf and get on schedule with the rest of the fashion world (ha - we'll see how long this lasts). It seems like all we do around here is wait for it to get warmer - so what am I doing scheming up more Fall/Winter things? Perhaps the realist in me is shining through...this *is* Michigan after all. |

| last call 'n' stuff |
[Mar. 20th, 2006|08:56 pm] |
I'm in the process of updating the shop with Spring/Summer items and it is oh so tempting to take the remaining sale items down. You know, to make it look fresh and clean. I've decided to leave the sale items up until my Spring updates are mostly done. If you've had your eye on a sale item, you have a day or two make your final decision ;-)
In other news:
I did an interview with councilc which should be up sometime this week.
Also, it seems that my HGTV segment aired again last week...too bad I didn't know. I would have set my alarm to get up and watch ;) I was clued in by the emails from viewers interested in doing my project. Thanks y'all!
PS The image of my head on the HGTV website is pretty funny. It isn't formatted right and my face looks a LOT wider than it really is - at least that's what I'm telling myself! And thank goodness my hair is getting longer again... |

| non pareils and sun dogs |
[Mar. 15th, 2006|05:21 pm] |
Last week I went to Frankenmuth (home of the worlds largest Christmas store...no I did not go there) on some business. It just so happened that my chocolate sensitive nose sniffed out a candy shop that sold giant non pareils! I bought 6 and gave one to my sister and one to my mom. I still have one left. Giant non pareils make me very very happy.

Today is a crisp sunny day. I took advantage of the light by getting most of my existing Spring/Summer inventory photographed. My friend Mrs. T took it upon herself to oversee the job I was doing. While sunbathing of course. She's my kind of lady.

| swarming forms |
[Mar. 12th, 2006|09:59 am] |
|
After a few years of banging my head against book keeping and accounting and tax filing awfulness, I think I finally GET IT. Thank goodness. Thoughts of going through this again next year were stressing me out enough that for a second I entertained the thought of closing up shop to avoid the swarming numbers and forms. My dad is such a good explainer. Yay for my dad. |
