CMM DAILY POP MIGRATES TO MOLANPHYPOP

FYI to those navigating to my dedicated LiveJournal page: As of August 2006, I have moved my full-length music-related blog posts off my LJ and onto a dedicated blog, MolanphyPop.

My LiveJournal, [info]molanphy, continues as a going concern for smaller, hopefully more freqeunt items, not all of which will be music-related. I will generally continue to keep posts here public but may decide to friendslock a post from time to time. (Feel free to friend me; be warned that I am usually slow to friend back.)

Longtime LJ friends, and all-around friendslist addicts, are encouraged to friend [info]molanphypop, which my wife [info]bradamant has helpfully set set up as a syndication of my blog. However, please leave comments at the MolanphyPop blog, not in the syndicated LJ feed.

Additional and much greater thanks should go to [info]bradamant for setting up the entire WordPress blog for me at MolanphyPop and migrating four years' worth of LJ entires over there, complete with comments. These are the advantages of marrying a woman who's both a babe and a geek.

Anyway, I hope to continue to see you all at both my LiveJournal and at MolanphyPop. Thanks!

Rare Muppets footage

Seriously, I consider myself a pretty big Muppets fan, and I'd never seen this before:

Be sure to turn up your volume just a tad – Beaker is the one talking, so it's a little hard to hear. (SFW unless your coworkers don't like hearing Muppet chatter or whimsical music emanating from your desk.)

An all-me RSS feed at Idolator

Please forgive the self-promotion, as always...

Some of you who were kind enough to express interest in my weekly Billboard chart column for Idolator were asking, "Have they set up a feed of just your stuff?" Well, it took a while, but they finally did.

This only covers the blog stuff I write for them, not my day-to-day comments (which are many, and so very witty...), but I think a once-a-week dose of my chart-related musings is probably enough for most of you.

Using LJ friends as blog fodder

I'd like to thank [info]el__guapo and [info]online_stalker for unwittingly serving as the lead anecdote for this week's edition of my Idolator column, "100 and Single." You guys are the best. No, you.

Okay, I didn't actually mention them by name, but: I needed a quick way into the story of how this completely random singer from Israel on a French indie label managed to score the highest Billboard chart debut in a year, thanks entirely to her appearance in that MacBook Air ad we've all seen 1,000 times in the last couple of weeks.

And I had a great anecdote, from [info]cercaria's and [info]techtraum's Superbowl party last Sunday. So I used it.

For the record, while the stalker_guapos didn't know who was singing the song in the ad, I come off as the douche for acting like I did know. So, overall, I'm the boob, I think.

Anyway...um, thanks? Please don't hurt me.

Writer's Block: Best. Concert. Ever.

What's the best concert you've ever been to?

The Cure in 1989, with Love & Rockets and the Pixies (yes, the Pixies) opening. At Giants Stadium, of all places.

The Singles Life

Today on Idolator, I'm debuting a new feature for them, covering the ups and downs of the Billboard Hot 100 singles chart. God and my schedule willing, I'll be doing this for them every Thursday for the foreseeable future.

This week, I offer a quick primer on the Hot 100 and talk about Soulja Boy.

The editors asked me to name the column, and so we're calling it 100 and Single.

Idolating again

Once again, for one day, I am guest-editing Idolator, my favorite aggregated music blog. Here's the post where they asked me to introduce myself, and here's a page they set up just for my stuff.

I first did this back in the beginning of May, and I enjoyed it in an exhausting-but-exhilirating way; I'll be posting short items for them all day today, and it's a lot of blogging in one 12-hour period. You can log in at the end of the day if you want to read everything all at once. Enjoy (I hope...).

Idolator for a day

For one day, I am guest-editing Idolator, my favorite aggregated music blog. Here's the post where they asked me to introduce myself.

I'll be posting short items for them all day today. You can log in at the end of the day if you want to read everything all at once. Not everything they'll post today is mine; associate editor Maura Johnston is the chief writer for the day and will probably be posting slightly more items than me (thank God – I still have a day job!).

You'll know it's me on the chart-related items, a piece about a new Apple iPod game, and a couple of MP3 download pieces, about old tracks from Fischerspooner and Uncle Tupelo.

Insert apology for shameless self-promotion here.

OSCAR PICKS 2006

Thanks to the accelerated awards schedule, this year's Oscar nominees will be announced earlier on the calendar than ever – tomorrow morning. As I have since 1997, I've put together my annual, blogarrific predictions of the five films that will be nominated for Best Picture at this year's Academy Awards:

  1. The Departed
  2. Dreamgirls
  3. Babel
  4. The Queen
  5. Little Miss Sunshine

Nominees will be announced tomorrow morning (Tues, 23 January) at about 8:30 a.m. EST.

A full-length analysis of this year's contest – for those who enjoy my annual ramblings on Hollywood – is online at my website.

Normally, this is the point when I say I have no idea how well I'm gonna do. This year, however, I feel much more confident than usual – but that's only because the whole damn Internet is doing Oscar predictions nowadays, and the above five titles keep appearing everywhere. So, if I go five for five tomorrow, don't be too impressed.

Thanks for reading...

Greatly insane

Last week was so exhausting – for pleasant reasons, mostly – that I'm now forced to do one of those catchall, week-in-review LJ posts. But I'll spare the disinterested from my spew with the magic of lj-cut tags.

My iPod died on Friday and was replaced by Sunday with a top-of-the-line iPod video. )

I saw three concerts in five days – including the Stones, about 50 feet away from Mick n' Keef. )

The only big chart news was the sissyfight between Justin and Clay. )
