8:06a Friday I'm in Love
Friday was a bit of an emotional rollercoaster. During the day we went back to the church where we got married for another wedding, this time it was a friend who I've known since he was a baby. The wedding was naturally a joyful occasion although unfortunately I found it stressful as my Father and his wife were present. I really wasn't up to a confrontation and another scene at my mate's wedding but by slightly bizarre chance I didn't actually see either of them, although that was probably helped by a rather hasty exit. It still screwed me up though. We then went to the Railway Museum to see the latest incarnation of the New Model Army exhibition, before retracing our steps to the Hospitium to show our faces at the reception.
And so Friday evening came and I headed off to Flock, which (as you probably know) I was expecting to be on the quiet side. Fuck me, how good was Flock!?! It was exactly what I needed and far, far busier than I was expecting! It certainly felt as busy as last time, but even better it was one of those nights when people really wanted to dance. Last month it was a case of "oh dear, what am I going to play next?", this time it was "What can I get away with next?!". Seriously though, it was an absolute joy to DJ and probably the best night I've had behind the decks this year.
As I ever I am grateful to Howard and Jess, however I'd especially like to extend my thanks to Tomas, not so much for the DJing as for the hard work and promotion he put into both the night itself and the LGS section... I'm sure we wouldn't have been anywhere near as busy without his efforts. Finally, on a personal note, thanks to Jack for chauffeuring and allowing me to indulge in a small sherry whilst DJing!

6:25p As heard by Craig Murray
My Fellow Americans, It grieves me to see the livelihood of decent ordinary Americans, folk who pay off their mortgages and file their tax returns every April 15, threatened by the behaviour of irresponsible people in the financial sector. That is why I am planning to take the money away from ordinary Americans and give it to those irresponsible people. Because capitalism and democracy is the best system of government in the world, and you can't have capitalism without irresponsible people in the financial sector. In normal circumstances I believe that companies which are managed badly should be allowed to go bust. But these are not normal circumstances. The market is not working, as people have lost confidence in the system. That is why, so that ordinary decent people will still be able to get credit to buy homes and pay their children through college, I must take all their money and give it to these very well paid people who mismanaged their companies. Because these are not ordinary people in normal circumstances who use monkey wrenches and stuff and can be allowed to lose their jobs as firms go bust. These are rich folk like me. Society needs rich folk, so unless you give away all your money to these very rich people now, you will end up poor and without a pension and you will die alone and miserable. This is not like taking money for medical insurance or welfare. I can assure you none of this money will be wasted on poor people, and hardly any of it on black people. So unless we build a bipartisan consensus and you give all your money to me to redistribute to the extremely rich, the plain truth is you will end up poor. Thank you. George W Bush

Amnesty Petition.
I've signed it, even though my MP has always voted against extending anti-terror legislation anyway.

9:51a smells like queen spirit
As we're off to a wedding tomorrow (on a Friday?! Is nothing sacred?!) this'll be the last plug for Friday Flock, aside from maybe on the odd community. I can hear the collective sigh. So yes, Friday Flock tomorrow night... just imagine Delgado in "Terror Of The Autons" saying "I am the Master and you will obey me". When I think about it, if I wasn't at work I'm sure I could come up with a flyer based on that RT cover.
I apologise to the 95% of my friends list who haven't a clue what I'm talking about there.
Anyway, as far as is Flock is concerned, let's have some requests... from memory I don't think we actually had that many in the flesh last month. But such is the way it goes, often we end up with far too many. Oh and I've realised that "In These Shoes" seems to have become the new "Jolene", so maybe it's time for a change?
In other news I accidentally bought the wrong deodorant and currently smell like a tart's boudoir.

11:53a by my own admission, man, I know exactly where you are
I'm getting a bit slack about updating this thing which isn't good when I like to do it as much for my own benefit as anything else. Well, you know, when I'm not blatantly plugging club stuff and all that.
Saturday we went to Halifax which is notable in that it was actually a lot nicer than I remembered. Admittedly I had it pegged as a sub-Dewsbury nightmare but it's actually almost civilised in places. I was quite astonished to find the Piece Hall had an enclave of goth/alternative/weirdly shops of the sort that seem to have been banished from the streets of Leeds. Unfortunately whilst in the Piece Hall I chanced across some rather beautiful "specialist items" that - being weak - I succumbed to purchasing.
Sunday was the Showcase gig that, well... can be looked at in two ways. From a technical point of view I think it was the worst gig we've done at The Subculture. Due to some sort of screw up the venue had to draft in a replacement engineer at very short notice, and unfortunately he hadn't used the PA before. As someone who is resolutely non-technical about such things it's difficult to know where the problem lay, but the result was firstly that the soundcheck took over two and a half hours (which is ridiculous given how easy the bands were on this occasion) and secondly there were some issues with the sound during Cybercide's set... only occasionally and not showstoppers by any stretch (frankly I don't think most people noticed) but they were there nonetheless. On the positive side the PA is getting serviced this week, so either way things should be sorted for next month.
Anyway, technical grumbles notwithstanding it was actually a very successful night. I was impressed that there were people dancing to Trashcanmann when you could pretty much guarantee none of them had seen or heard the band before. And then Cybercide pretty much filled the dancefloor, as you'd probably expect. It was certainly busy with a lot of new faces, so hopefully we'll pick up some new regulars for Sunday nights.
Finally last night we went over to visit my brother, essentially to discuss my Father but we did have plenty of time to chat about more pleasant stuff and we got to see the children too. Obviously the discussions surrounding my Father were uncomfortable (and frankly I was dreading them) but it's very reassuring that both my brother and his wife share most of our concerns. I don't think much good will come of it, of course, but given that my brother and I haven't always seen to eye to eye in the past, it means a lot to me that he's being supportive over this.

8:05a we have all the time in the world
Heard first thing this morning that the printers haven't got the artwork I sent Friday, which rather means we won't have the flyers by Flock. I'm rather gutted about this as it caused me some grief getting it to them in time. It's not a disaster, they're really for bombing Whitby with and I can photocopy up some naff ones for Friday, but you know, when you push yourself to get something done in a narrow time frame and then it doesn't come off, especially when you could have done a better job with more time...
Anyway, on a happier note Flock! Flock the second! Flock the v5.2! Flock the spamfest starting now! It is - inevitably - the difficult second album this week, and the lack of a band means, on paper at least, it's the weakest of the first four... but I'm feeling curiously positive.
It's a shame about being band-free but it wasn't for lack of trying. At various points over the last few months I've had three strong bands lined up and wanting to play, but at each point they've fallen through for completely understandable reasons. By the time the third dropped out there really wasn't time to promote a fourth even if there'd been one in waiting.
Talking about bands, I can finally announce the December pre-Flock gig. Headlining we've got Modulate celebrating the launch of debut album "Detonation", it's possibly the only UK date they'll be playing before 2009 and almost certainly the only one in the North of England. Support comes from ESA, who will (hopefully) be launching their new album at the gig.
I think with Screaming Banshee Aircrew in November and Modulate in December we've really got a couple of killer gigs lined up for the end of the year!

Films I have seen this week, in order of amazingness
Casablanca West Side Story Lord of the Flies Hairspray Texas Chainsaw Massacre Koyaanisqatsi (live soundtrack, not Philip Glass)
Casablanca; how have I not seen that film before? It's absolutely fantastic. I like the way that it's shot on a tiny soundstage designed by someone who's never left America, and one of the aeroplane shots was actally midget extras running around a small scale model plane with dry ice everywhere. I also seem to know all the dialogue.
I love Lord of the Flies, poor Piggy. I think I empathise because I also am helpless without my glasses, and tell boring stories about the origins of placenames.

pee ess, there is nothing better than forgetting to read the Doo's and Don'ts for eight months, then gorging yourself like a fattie after her Weight Watchers meeting.

5:58p slaying club dancefloors
Christ almighty I've been busy at work this week. Anyway, thought I'd best remind you all about this:
This Sunday (28th September): FREE Showcase: Cybercide + Trashcanmann Cybercide play upbeat gothic-influenced ebm, while Trashcanmann evoke the Cramps with their Punk/Goth Rock n Roll. Doors 7pm, first band 8pm, Free Entry Subculture, Wade Lane, Leeds. Website | Facebook | MySpace | Netgoth
I do sometimes wonder how many ways are really necessary to promote a single event, but there you go.
In other news I've been slaving over flyers this week, the fruits of my labours should be online soon. The only thing I can announce right now is that Legion will be supporting Screaming Banshee Aircrew in November. Hopefully I'll announcing the December line-up on Monday!
