any thoughts on kernel panic errors

I've got a iMac intel 24" system.
OS Tiger 4.11

have backed up a bootable system and have been running off of that but am still getting kernel panic errors like popcorn.

I've been doing some research
some suggest its bad ram
(did a test w/ my terminal app and all looks fine)

I'm going to be installing leopard this coming week, hoping that it will 'fix' these issues.

anytime I am running something like Final Cut Studio 1 and i'm exporting using Compressor ... it panics and gives me the dreaded grey curtain with the kernel.

right before this happens though I get intermittent stripes of pixelation that look kind of like this:

the 'line' stays put when I move the window around. this happens in mail, in my browser, etc. for example, I just got another dashed line of red across this browser as I was placing that image.

anyone have any words of advice or suggestions?

(sorry for the long post)

imic

Not too long ago I asked you lovely people about my mic being stupid with the USB dongle I was using. Basically the result was me purchasing an iMic. I finally switched them out and have now encountered a new issue. I'm almost exclusively using Ventrilo for voice chatting right now. Despite the fact that I have the output set in the Ventrilo settings to come through my headset, I've started losing my sound to my headset and I have to go into System Prefs to switch between the computer's line out and the iMic to get it to come back. I have no idea what could be causing this. Does anyone have any ideas? Is there any kind of program that will give me more control over what sounds are output where than the Prefs do? I found a program called Detour that may help but its no longer in development and I've not tried it yet. Has anyone used it before?

external HD giving me issues

I have a 160 gig Smart Disk Firelite external HD. The kind that only needs a USB power supply, and lately it's been giving me issues starting up and staying on, meaning it won't make that lovely whirring noise and vibrate ever so quietly. Instead it just kind of sputters and clicks. OCCASIONALLY I can get it to start up, but I have to unplug it and plug it back in numerous times. I've had it for maybe 6 months now, and I will admit it's seen some wear and tear, especially since my 80 gig HD on my mac is quickly running out of space. I'm tempted to call the company and ask if there's any reason it won't start up and/or mount, and maybe get a replacement... has anyone else had this issue? Is it just because my Macbook couldn't power it enough?

Also Time Machine is worrying me. It's doing something and I don't know what. I recently restored from an old backup, and since it wouldn't let me keep backing up after the restore, I wiped the partition and started a new backup. I'd since then restored but had been too lazy to start making new backups since I didn't have anything important to back up. I have a huge project I definitely don't want to find corrupt or something like that, but Time Machine is going wonky.

It's giving me these errors..

To Leopard, or not to Leopard

So I am considering upgrading to Leopard from Tiger on my Mac. However, I'm not sure what sort of performance expectation to put on doing so. Can someone give me some advice, please? :)

Specifics:
Mac Mini 1.42GHz PPC
HDD 80 GB Stock
HDD 300 GB 7200 RPM via Firewire (My OS is actually running from this drive is *faster* than the stock drive)
1 GB RAM

So as noted, recently, I took a 300GB 7200 RPM PATA drive I had laying around and put it into a Firewire enclosure, and made it bootable and have noticed a significant increase in performance. Now, I'm wondering what Leopard could do?
Any insight would be appreciated.
TIA!

Unwanted addresses?

So, I have three mail accounts, my .mac acct. which is my personal email and two gmails which I use for bills, finances, internet accounts, ebay, etc., and the other which is all the garbage stuff and riff raff.

My question is: when I type in a contact to email, often, depending on the contacts name or prefix, there will be dozens or more 'contacts' which aren't really a contact of mine that comes up. These are some craigslist or ebay mails which I've bought or sold and from people asking questions, some are from merchants, some are fwd. emails I've gotten, etc. etc. etc. You get the picture. How does one get rid of all these?

I only have about 30 people who I want their names and emails to come up in the actual list. There are literally hundreds of superfluous names and emails that now come up. I've never added them to my contacts and want them to be gone. Is this possible? I can't seem to even 'find' where these are stored in the mail program. Oh, I use the mac mail program in Tiger.

iMac 2.4 C2D 1gb 667 MHz, 10.4.11 system.

Collecting old mail from the server

I've just had my work iMac upgraded, and I've lost my emails in my Mail inbox.
Mail has fetching new email that's arrived today, so I know the account settings are okay, and I know the old emails are still on the server, because I can see them there with mail2web.
How can I force Mail to fetch them?

wishing again...

If Apple were smart, they would do a deal with Netflicks. That would actually give the Apple TV product value.

Netflicks lets it's members download movies and TV shows for free. Well you have to pay your monthly fee to be a member but after that there's no charge to download content.

That's the model I wish Apple had, and it would make sense to just leverage Netflicks content library.

Latest iTunes = slow USB

The latest iTunes update (7.7) seems to have affected either my iPod (a Nano fattty, 1.1.2 firmware) or OS X (10.5.4) on my iBook G4. Plugging it into either of my iBook's USB ports results in a USB 1.1 connection.

Has anyone else had this problem after updating? Any suggestions for getting back to USB 2 speeds?

Thanks!

New HD for PB

First, thanks for all your replies to my last post. They were really helpful :D

Ok, so I'm thinking of getting the 160.0GB Hitachi/IBM Travelstar 5K160 5400RPM 8MB Data Buffer ATA/7 9.5mm UltraSlim 2.5 (HIT0A28419) for my Aluminium 15" PowerBook G4 (1.25MHz, 2GB RAM).

What do you think? Good choice?

hi all - something screwy is happening with our home connection and i want to be able to monitor all connected PCs and Macs from one of my macs - we all connect wirelessly to the internet via a dlink broadband router

is there such a beast?

(i'd prefer a free program - but would consider a paid program if it had a trial version available)

iCal & Sharing Calendar Writing...

Hi Folks.

I'm running a webcal server and using iCal 2.x for a client. You can easily subscribe to, and see other folks calendars in this context, and publish your own.

However, is there a way to publish a calendar with iCal that several people can manipulate and write events to? Is there a way to do this? I can't figure out any way within iCal that you can write events to a calendar that you, yourself, have not published. I think such a thing is possible within the CalDAV protocol, but does iCal 2.x support this functionality? As far as I can tell, it doesn't (or I've not been able to figure it out), but I wanted to get other opinions.

I just bought a Macbook Pro, 3 days ago. Today I read something about glitches with the nvidia geforce 8600m GT graphics cards that come in the macbook pro, including mine. I don't really understand this issue-- does it affect me? I don't play world of warcraft or anything on my computer, does that matter? Should I act sooner rather than later so that I don't end up losing files/my computer during school?

i'm kind of pissed off that they didn't tell me about this when i bought the laptop.

Itunes Jams Up and must be Force Quit or killed

running iTunes 7.7
Mac OS 10.5.4
iBook G4 1.2 GHz
1.25 GB RAM
iPod Classic 160GB with no discernible problems up to this point. about 6 months old.

Have not updated my iPod since my upgrade to iTunes 7.7. Tonight when trying to update my iPod, iTunes freezes. Force Quit iTunes, eject iPod. Restart computer. Reset iPod. Restart iTunes. All songs are where they should be. iTunes works prefect. Connect iPod. iPod mounts to desktop. iTunes becomes sluggish, then hangs, then freezes. Spinning pinwheel. Must Force Quit iTunes and eject iPod manually. iPod will not mount inside iTunes. iPod works fine when ejected, plays music, no missing music.

Any suggestions on how i can fix this?

I made the switch from PC to MacBook last week and I love it. I've made myself familiar with the basic functions and programs but have come up with a few questions with the switch and was hoping for some help.

-Is there a free program (not limited to one or five songs) that will transfer songs from my iPod back to iTunes so I can reformat my iPod to my Mac? I manually updated my iPod on my PC so I have no music on it anymore. Every version I've tried has been a trial version.

-I know you can get Microsoft Word on Mac, but is it necessary to pay for the whole Word, Excel, Powerpoint.. if I'm just going to use Word for college papers? I guess if not, I could use TextEdit and just use a PC on campus to print it out with Word.

-Is it necessary to get an external hard drive from the Apple store or can I get one from my local Target-ish store? Does it have to be the Apple brand or does that not matter?

Thanks for any help.

iomega 500GB External USB Drive Issue...

I've got a 500GB USB External Desktop drive that I've been using with Time machine to backup my MacBookPro. I'm running 10.5.4.

I noticed earlier today that the drive seems to be continuously running. Ya know ~ whirring, clicking, light constantly blinking like some program is continuously using the drive.

Does this until I eject it. If I re-mount the drive ~ it starts the cycle again. ~ whirring, clicking, light blinking. This is a little disconcerting. Driving *heh* me a little crazy.

I've unplugged the power supply. Moved the connection from a USB hub to one of the on-board ports.

Questions I have:

1. How can I find out what the blazes is hitting the drive?

2. I have backups on the thing dating back to ~ November 2007 ~ I think. Trying to think why I would need to go back that far because I may want to reformat the drive with disk utility. Matter of fact I'm running superduper to clone the HD in my MBP as I type this. Do y'all think this (reformatting) will help? But then of course I've lost all my time machine backups as well! Dunno if this is really an issue as everything else seems okay...

3. If this drive is going out, it may be the last IOmega drive I buy. What do y'all use? Should I spend the extra bucks and go FireWire?

Suggestions? Recommendations?

Quite a quandary...

Can I Make a Request?

This may not be a new idea, but I have not seen a post for it as of yet. Being that I am not a developer, I do not have the skills necessary to perform such a task. But i would like to see an Application developed specifically for the iPhone, that will allow users optimized views to post and view friends pages etc. Much like xJournal has the ability to do. I would find this very useful as you might have guessed because I am an iPhone user.

Damnit...

Just wondering if some of you can help me with my little dilemma. Here are some bits of information that may (but probably won't) add more incite into my problem:

Macbook running version 10.5.4.
And this screenshot will tell you everything you need to know about my account:

AND YET, whenever I try to log in on me.com, I get an error message that reads: Invalid name or password.

I know for a fact that the password is correct. I have even reset it and tried again with no success.

A Google search told me that some people who were on .Mac trials have experienced problems in transitioning to the MobileMe service, but I have been a .Mac member for over 2 years.

Any help? :(

I really don't know how to explain this...please laugh at me if you want. I had a folder of photos saved on my desktop. I opened them in photoshop, and then my cat jumped on my laptop and pressed a bunch of buttons. Now the photos are gone from the folder, and I can't find them anywhere. Not even in the trash. Is that even possible? Are they completely gone, or are they somewhere on my computer? If anyone has any idea what I can do to find them...please help :(
