Should have seen this from a mile away [15 May 2008|12:01pm]
[ mood | listless ]

Today, for the first time in nearly a month, the cats were let out. I hung out with them in the backyard for nearly an hour, supervising their first visit onto new terrain. They both know how to get back to the door and are still very cautiously exploring. Now and again they even stop to sunbathe, it being a stupidly hot day.

I have errands to run today. I need the cats to come back inside. Are they interested in coming back in? Of course not. Having just eaten a nibble before they went out, can I entice them back in with food? Of course not. Am I going to leave them on their own and run my errands when this is their first time out in the wilds of the backyard? *sigh* Of course not.

I just had to pick a gorgeous day like today to let them out. They're never coming back in. And I need to go out, damnit!

Stupid stupid human creature!

ramblings of a sleepy mom [11 May 2008|03:42pm]
[ mood | sleepy ]

It's weird using a real monitor with my laptop again. Haven't done it for years. I mean, it's a good sort of weird, but it's still weird.

Allistair seems to be boycotting pants for most of today. On the one hand it's just sort of cute with him running around in a onesie. On another hand, it's making playing "potty training time easier, as we don't have to struggle with pants constantly. Also, much easier to tickle his baby thighs and play "eat the drumstick". Actually, I'm not really seeing a downside to this "Peter Pantsless" behaviour.

My grandmother brought over one of my grandfather's ships yesterday as a housewarming gift. My grandfather spent 6-9 months on each of his ship kits (except the Sovereign of the Seas, which took over 2 years). The workmanship on each of his is better than any other I've seen at antique shops and on display in random places over the years. And now I have an old paddlewheel in my home. To say it's cool is an understatement beyond belief.

Mucho thanks to everyone who could make it yesterday - good turnout and lots of random people I never thought would show up. It was work to put the day together (and I'm still wiped out from it), but it was so very worth it. Home is broken in as well as the yard, which makes life around here feel much better than it did when we first signed the lease and all we could see were dollar signs. Seriously, to those to made it out and braved the (lack of) parking, mucho thanks.

To the myriad of people who didn't show up because of illness paranoia - THANK YOU! And we'll definitely have to have you over later. Seriously, don't feel bad for not showing up. I'm all about people staying home for a speedier recovery, rather than going out and infecting me and Mr. Beebe. :P

Mom's day is a bit more work and effort than I had hoped for today, but it's certainly not a bad day for me.

Moon names... [09 May 2008|10:35am]
[ mood | geeky ]

Since I only skim my LJ lists these days, I may have just missed it, but on the off chance no one has posted it (since I haven't seen it yet):

You can send your name to the moon!

Intricate machinery [08 May 2008|09:47am]
[ mood | snuffly beyond belief ]
[ music | Qntal - Palestinalied ]

It was determined this morning, by the adults of the house, that Allistair (like all proper toddlers) is just a complicated piece of machinery, designed to convert food into housework.

For those with twisted Swedish pride... [06 May 2008|03:09pm]
[ mood | impressed ]

An old dear friend of mine, with whom I have only recently gotten back in touch, is missing my housewarming party coming up. Normally I'd be miffed, but he's got a damned impressive excuse. More specifically, he'll be one of the team members driving #97, the car with the Swedish Confederate Flag on the roof.

So if you've got nothing better to do this weekend, I really do highly recommend checking out the event and cheering on the black metal rebels. :)

There's nothing quite like filing a police report and then having to take a break while one of the officers has a moment of utter geekery over the gold record in the room.

utterly retarded [02 May 2008|11:09am]
[ mood | cynical ]

I love how photostamps.com has updated the postal rates printed on their 1st class letter mail postage. The rates don't go up until the 12th, and I didn't even realize they were going up again until I received a bunch of $0.42 stamps in my order (since I thought I ordered $0.41 stamps).

So what's utterly retarded?

Postcard postage rates are also going up. As of 12 May, they will be $0.27 each. Did photostamps.com update this rate for consumers? Of course not.

So now I have a bunch of postcard stamps I have to use in the next week (which I was planning to do any way, but still) unless I want to throw on additional postage, but at least the letter postage is good for a while.

Sheesh.

book memeage [29 Apr 2008|03:17pm]
snagged from [info]kalinichta

What we have here is the top 106 books most often marked as "unread" by LibraryThing’s users. As in, they sit on the shelf to make you look smart or well-rounded. Bold the ones you've read, underline the ones you read for school, italicize the ones you started but didn't finish. Put an asterisk * next to the ones you'd read again or recommend to someone, even if you originally read them for school.

Haven't really looked at the list yet, but I'm very curious. I know I tend to prefer 'classical' books more than your average book reader, but I also know that for all the books I'd like to read, I'm a REALLY slow reader so I've only read about 1% of the ones on my list.

observations and oddities [28 Apr 2008|04:53pm]
1) Kurt and I have very different methods of thought and organization of thought. Sometimes I'm amazed that he can get certain things done. I'm sure he feels the same about me.

2) I am losing sleep at an almost alarming rate these days. If I'm crabby at you for no particular reason, blame the lack of sleep. Conversely, if you happen upon any missing sleep please give it back - or at least luxuriate in the theft of it. *Some*one should be enjoying it.

3) I just answered a house call from George "The Fat Man" Sanger. He was calling from his car. Part of me wonders if it was the Rolls.

4) I won't be able to do laundry again until Thursday (unless I miraculously remember to start it tomorrow during Allistair's nap). But at least I remembered to mail the rent check.

Just FYI, since more than one person has asked, aside from the snail mail addy, none of the contact info for me has changed. Contact info for Kurt also remains entirely unchanged, except for his @speakeasy address, which hasn't changed very much. :)

I'd be annoyed if it weren't sorta funny [23 Apr 2008|03:42pm]
[ mood | amused ]

In cleaning up the old place today (which I do for minutes at a stretch while taking breaks from work), I encountered a box of miscellany from the last time I moved and was down to filling the last few boxes with assorted crap I'd sort through later. At least much of it was deemed trashable. Sheesh.

1 down, ???? to go [21 Apr 2008|12:17pm]
Survived the first night in the new place. All of us slept horribly, as was expected. The thermostat is going to take some getting used to. The fridge needs desperately to be filled. The cats will take some time to stop spazzing and be willing to explore the entire house. But we are settling in alright.

Allistair loves his new room. He's sleeping in our room for the first 5-7 nights, but then we'll transition him over to the crib. He got up this morning and headed straight for his room to go get toys and books. I think the more he gets used to the idea that his room is where all the fun stuff is, the more he won't mind waking up in it. We'll see. He's also sleeping in our room for a few nights until I can find/set up the baby monitor in his room. Right now it's packed, and I've no clue where. *sigh*

Now to clean up bits and pieces in this old apartment and get my internet set up in the new place, and I won't have to come back here again - which will be good, but also a little weird and sad. Right, back to work...

barely there... [20 Apr 2008|06:08pm]
Just wanting to inform folks that my internet access is a bit limited for the rest of the month, and probably VERY restricted for up to two weeks after, as it's taking longer to set up up internet in the new place than we'd anticipated.

I'll be checking my email every time I'm at work, but that's about all I can guarantee.

It was only a matter of time [19 Apr 2008|09:47am]
[ mood | amused ]

Last night, as he's been doing often while we pack and chaos reigns supreme in this house, Allistair was playing with the phone. This would be our regular house phone, not one of his 4 phones (one of which is real, just not plugged into the phone jack). At 10:37 I was trying to drift off to sleep. Allistair, however, decided it was still 'phone time'. (Note to self: Why yes, it is a stupid idea to give lots of ice cream to a toddler right before bedtime.) So there I was, slowly drifting, when "BEEP BEEP BEEP... BEEP BEEP BEEP... BEEP BEEP BEEP..." pops my eyes wide open. (Note to self: When Allistair presses the 'page' button on the main phone, both the studio phone and the one in the bedroom beep.) Kurt, being the helpful soul he is, managed to distract Allistair from doing it again while preventing him from crying so much that he'd wake me up - this is not an easy feat. I remain highly impressed.

But then I noticed something. The message light on the phone was blinking. It was probably someone who called while we were out at the new place, unpacking a few things so we could re-use some boxes. The message was not one I had expected. For one thing, it registered as a missed call at 10:36PM. Great. Allistair hung up on someone trying to call. Lovely. The message was even better, something along the lines of "This is 911 Emergency calling. We received a call from this number and are sending out an emergency vehicle to (insert our address here) now. If this is not an emergency, please call..." (yada yada yada, so on and so forth. I kinda stopped listening at this point).

So I called Kurt into the bedroom, told him that we should expect flashy lights and sirens at any minute, and he quickly remedied the situation so that I could get some sleep. Yay!

It should be noted that 911 isn't a speed dial number. Allistair had to specifically dial it and press "talk".

If you want to see Mr. Beebe's version of the story, click here. Not sure what Kurt's take on the whole thing was. I'm just glad we didn't get into any trouble.

On defying conventional wisdom and mythos [14 Apr 2008|11:41am]
I just dropped a piece of toast. Not only did it land butter-side-up, but it bounced off it's rim before doing so.

Random luck? Or a sign that today will not be entirely of the suck?
