Video codecs [Sep. 16th, 2007|04:22 pm]

[Current Mood | okay]

I recently switched from using the windows K-Lite video codec pack to CCCP, mainly due to K-Lite's buggy playback of the .mkv format. So far the only problem I've had is the fact that Real Alternative and QuickTime Alternative aren't bundled in the CCCP install, no biggie really, although while CCCP seems to be updated fairly regularly and has a KISS philosophy, it might turn out to be too simple for myself in the future. Does anyone have any recommendations for alternative codec packs they've had an on-going good experience with?

[Current Mood | tired]

New mix, freshly uploaded. Titled 'Sentimental Interference'; often beatless, often noisy, lots of layering to make sure many frequencies are used, made for sensory deprivation purposes. I'm sure this'll fuck minds to the degree I'm hoping it will, although it could have been harsher had I more knowledge of noise/p.e. stuff. Should work well with my DT100s, mwuhahaha. Anyway, enjoy (58:01, 106Mb).

Anyone got suggestions for similar style mixes that might be available online?

Upcoming [Dec. 22nd, 2006|01:29 am]

[Current Music |Hexstatic -- Daft Human]

I'll be in Dundee until the 29th when I'll be heading west for Pressure, then back through to Edinburgh on the 30th. NYE party the next day, where ever Leila is going. Possibly spending a few more days there although L is working during the day so shall have to find amusements. Poooossibly Absolute on the Friday the 5th; would be nice to finally see it in the main room at Studio 24 and it's free entry before 11:30, although will have to see about that one.

Things to do in the next year

December
Friday 29th - Pressure
Slam, Josh Wink, James Holden, Magda and Keith Tenniswood (aka Radioactive Man)
The Arches, Glasgow

January
Friday 19th - Subculture
Âme [1], Harri
The Reading Rooms, Dundee

Friday 26th - Implant
The Phoenix, Manchester

Febuary
Friday 2nd - Noize:Tek
The Teknoist, Dolphin, Ebola
The Phoenix, Manchester

April
Friday 6th - Bis
King Tut's Wah Wah Hut, Glasgow

Ideas for clubs/events to fit in somewhere
Fimbulvetr, Gigantor, The Wendyhouse/Mutate, Judder, Chains On Velvet, Cabbage, We Are Electric, Jakn, Twisted & Brainfire, Digital Hardcore, Bedlam, Sin, Ascension, DV8, Nightshade, Club Lash, Slimelight, Infest, Dark City, Whitby, Maschinenfest?

I made a right hash of getting down south more this year, and I've no illusions of getting everywhere I'd like to in the next, but I'll see what I can do.

Âme's Rej has been voted release of 2006 in the latest Mixmag. This track has been so hyped in it's scene that Âme made their recent mix album look like this. I have a suspicion it'll be the One More Tune though.

P.S. Go download Hexstatic's Exactshit bootleg album as it is very good.

Things to do! [Apr. 25th, 2006|12:12 am]
[Current Music |FC Kahuna -- Hayling]

This Friday I shall be heading through to Edinburgh to see [info]leila_child and to go to the Rose McDowall and blackwavesid at Fimbulvetr, then to attend the Beltane Fire Festival on Sunday. There's also the possibility I'll be at Cyberia on Saturday but that's unconfirmed, as Leila will be staying in to get a good nights sleep.

Next month, not only will Dave Clarke (who I saw DJ a while back in Edinburgh) be in Dundee, but so will drum and bass phenomenon Pendulum! [info]noize_pollution noted that Ticketweb has them listed as playing Dundee, then some kick ass sounding dnb fest, then Fabric! No doubt it's due to Radio1's Big Weekend event the same weekend (with Pendulum playing on the Friday). I've signed up to the mailing list but amn't placing any hope in actually getting tickets (although Primal Scream and a few other interesting (and not so interesting) acts will be playing), not that I care really with Headway on both Saturday and Sunday evening, the first night featuring a two hour set by FC Kahuna!! S'like, OMG.

The only problem with this amazing weekend is that it's the same one I was planning to go down to Judder, a night I've been wanting to check out for quite a while now. And it's the one that [info]asw909 and co are DJing at >_<. Apologies to [info]lee_chaos and all involved but I'm sure you'll understand ;)

Two weeks after what will surely be a crazy weekend and it's Dark City time which should be good fun. There's nothing in the line-up that really grabs my attention but that means even more time for doing that whole talking to people social thingy.

The month after that and there's the slight possibility of going to see Venetian Snares somewhere down south, plus there's the dead certainty of Implant on the 30th. Bring it on.

Is it just us, or does the hook in the menu music for Project Gotham Racing 3 sound like J.Viewz's "Muse Breako", the track remixed by Infected Mushroom which is on IM The Supervisor? And the very start of the race results music sounds like the very start of Gwen Stefani's "Rich Girl"?

Also, does anyone know of a track that samples a washing machine going into it's final spin in the bridge (bridge of the track that is)? This question was inspired by "The Terminal" by Pendulum.

Glowstringing [Apr. 20th, 2006|01:35 am]
[Current Mood | still tired]
[Current Music |Missy Elliot -- Get Ur Freak On (DJ Echo Pie Dance mix)]

Hazaa! After following this handy tutorial for the last couple of days, I can now do a basic weave. I decided long ago after seeing this breath-taking video that if I was ever to take up poi/glowstringing that I would not do it out until I was at least of intermediate proficiency, so it'll be a while before I showcase my mad skillz to the world. I find it strange and annoying that you sometimes see glowstringers out at events like Infest who only seem to be able to do basic moves that pale in comparison to the abilities of many of the videos you can get from glowsticking.com (that is after you register). My style of glowsticking/liquiding is different from most other glow enthusiasts I've seen out and about in that I prefer a slower kind of grace, peppered with elements of locking, moshing and the goth 2-step over speed and more technical mores like hand flows, splits, etc (although catch me when I'm rolling and it can be a whole other ball game), so I'm wondering how my stringing style will turn out. *does the pie dance* Right, bed time.

Implant [Apr. 19th, 2006|11:37 pm]
[Current Mood | tired]
[Current Music |Evil Activities -- X-tinction]

An attempt at off-loading some thoughts into my external memory bank.

A few weekends ago I was down in Manchester for the resurrection of Implant, featuring Mono No Aware. Arrived 3pm-ish after a Megabus down then wandered 'round the centre aimlessly looking for glowsticks before meeting up with techno_muppet. Got 'train to his home in Ashton, was introduced to his mum, dumped stuff and prepared. Back to the centre again where we met up with with some of P0rl's mates and sipped a few cocktails in some bar. Gav and Claire arrived after a while then we all headed to The Zoo (which was a very sweet venue). Met, chatted with and bumped into many peeps including [info]megashrike, [info]phuturatica, [info]mz_pink, [info]kazsinlos, Rachel, [info]asw909, [info]echo_echo, [info]diffrentcolours and tonysatorii. The music was just as amazing and varied as I remember it from the Implant room at Dark City last year, but this time with added hardcore (which is good seeing as I've been on a massive hardcore/gabber/hardstyle bender recently), and although I don't usually listen to proper noise/power electronica unless I'm in a certain mood, it was an amazing sensation to just stand at the edge of the dancefloor and have your ears assaulted by a total onslaught of randomness. [info]dj_matt's set as TriaX was pretty blistering (sparks flew!) and Leif's set was awesome. He really knows how to build up a track, making it a delight to dance to, although I thought it was rather noisier and a bit more sparse than his Infest set in 2004. Oh yeah, and the visuals were tops too. I couldn't help grinning at the distorted clip from The Second Renaissance and when the logo swept in and out in time to the slowly pulsating white noise nearer the end of the set. After it all finished, P0rl, Rachel and I headed to Jillies for a bit where I stomped around to metal with glow before we headed to crash. All in all, a great night out, but I am rather annoyed with myself that I didn't take the time to chat more with peeps I hadn't seen in ages. I should probably be less bouncy in future, if you catch my drift. As for missing Ophidian and Laurent Garnier/James Holden/Natan Fake in Glasgow, ach, well, they'll be around again at some point.

P.S. Check the lovely pic of P0rl in the background here (enlarge for the closeup ;)

I'm catching the National Express to Birmingham this evening to spend a long weekend with [info]scratchmeharder, should be good :D

Also, I'm going through a can't-be-arsed-with-IRC phase atm and I've never really liked using e-mail, but I do get a bit bored and lonely at times so if anyone wants to talk to me or just have a general natter or catch up, add me on Jabber or MSN so we can talk.
