watch for falling stocks It's been a few years since I last purchased any individual stocks, but last time I thought about it I signed up for a bunch of price alerts on interesting companies. They've been going off left and right lately. I no longer remember what most of these companies do. |

credit card: brace for impact I purchased a new clarinet today. I think it succeeds my old PowerBook as the most expensive anything I've ever purchased. It ought to hold its value better than a computer, though. |

Apple picking! I want to go! It's fall and I long for a day in the orchard enjoying crisp fall air and tasty apples (and cider donuts and caramel apples).
Does anyone have a car who wants to go to an orchard sometime? I'm free this weekend for the most part except for needing to go to the farm in Waltham on Sunday.
Taking matters into my own hands and going to try the commuter rail + bike method. Thinking 11:20 or 1:30 train to South Acton which is then a 5-6 mile ride to orchard. Doable! And I will get to smugly pass the line of cars heading to the orchard. =D |

Retail Therapy And also, gear for my Mt. Washington hike.
I got myself a camelbak (Alpine Explorer 3L), alpine sticks (woo, adjustable and light!), and new insoles for my hiking boots!
And now I look online and see that the camelbak comes in black. Hmm. Might be checking out what REI has and maybe swapping.
On the list of things to get from REI are new compression pants, hiking boots, and anything nifty I can find on sale.
I had a filling done at the dental school, hence the shopping trip. I also got myself some cute mini cookie-cutters from Crate and Barrel. I shall use them to make cute fall themed baked goods, like gingerbread/sugar cookies (one batch of each, and then maybe tinting the leaves orange and green and yellow and red for fall). |

**** YOU BULLPEN Last one out of Shea stadium, burn it to the ground!
My plan to fix the bullpen:
FIRE EVERYONE. No, this is not overreacting. They have nobody worth keeping, except for perhaps Joe Smith. If they want Smith, they should fire him with the rest and then resign him the next day. We need some fresh pitchers and some outside-the-box thinking. 16 blown saves in the second half is not acceptable. The Phillies pen had fewer blown saves all year. |

Dreams... I think I had a whole bunch of weird dreams last night...
I was riding the #4 bus home from downtown, bus gets to 171st street and doesn't stop, so I get off at the next stop and take the bus back towards my house. Somehow I find myself after seemingly 5 minutes or so down at 72nd street or so and I'm very confused as to how I got THERE so fast. I try to explain myself to the other passengers on the bus, and everyone thinks I'm crazy. So then I ride back uptown again and I talk to someone who has a the illustrated review of pharmacology book and a First Aid book, thus proclaiming them to be a med student.
And then a fragment of cell phone acting really weird that I can't tell is from real life or dream, but I remember thinking that the phone is old and I need a new one.
Then another fragment of realizing that I'm in NYC and that I have to call BSD and folks to see what's going on and to hang out.
My head, evidently, hasn't gotten itself around the fact that I live in Boston now because I still dream in NYC. |

Why I like to track my exercise I was having this discussion with Jeff a few nights ago, and I think it makes a good bloggy topic. I love tracking my exercise. I love knowing how many calories a week I burn, how far/fast I run and how much I can lift. It's gone way beyond accumulating Sparkpoints, although I suppose I got into the habit tracking on Sparkpeople. I don't track food much these days, but I still track every minute of exercise I do. I love seeing my minutes accumulate. I'm proud that I've done almost 12,000 minutes of exercise in 2008.
I always run with my Nike+ ... again, I love the tracking. I love logging in and seeing all my runs lined up, all the graphs of speed and distance. I love setting goals and achieving them. And participating in competitions and being able to share my progress with friends. For me, that is motivation to run more, to run faster, to run farther... because I will have taller little lines on my graphs. Higher weekly mileages. I will have more miles than last month! More miles than that really good month a while ago. (It's also good to keep myself honest, when I'm not running enough, I can see it on my graphs.) And I can look back and see how I was doing in the past, and it makes me feel good that I can do more now.
And wow, I can do more now! When I started running, I was running 10-20 minute runs at 4.6 MPH on the treadmill and it was really hard work. By the end of the indoor running season, I was (I think) at about 4.8 MPH. After a summer of running outside (not running as much, but running faster and getting stronger and biking a lot) I get back on the treadmill and find that 5.0 or 5.1 or 5.3 is OK for a 20 minute run. I can run a mile at 6.0 MPH, and I'm sure it will be easier for me now than the last time I did it. =) It's a subtle change, but with my tracking and blogging, I notice it. I am proud of it. Really, really proud, because if I keep running, I'll be able to run even faster! I also am noticing that running doesn't hurt as much the next day. I used to expect sore thighs after a run, but recently my legs have been feeling totally fine, the same night and the next day. I remember being really really tired after runs in the past, being pretty much spent and only good for sitting and showering and going to bed. Now I don't mind cooking dinner... involved cooking, not microwave leftovers cooking.
This makes me have thoughts about running longer races. I really want to know what it feels like to cross the finish line after running a marathon. Or a half marathon. Or a 10K. I think I'm going to start with the 10K, because it's not too far from what I can do already (although ask me to run another mile or two after a 4+ mile run and I'll not be happy about it.) It's a pity that my gaming guild convention is on Columbus day weekend because the Tufts Womens 10K is on the Monday and it would be so nice to run it, sounds like just my kind of race! (And it starts and ends in downtown Boston, which is very convenient to me!) Next year, if timing works out... and if not, there are other 10Ks I can run.
I think that I am planning my surgery around races. I really don't want to miss the Ras na hEireann around St. Patrick's day... so maybe having it right after then, then that would hopefully have me recovered in time for the May Ya Ya's race, even if I were to only walk it. (If I volunteer for the Ras, I hope to get free admission to all those other races I ran this summer for free.) I guess it's better to focus on what I can do re: the surgery, and I think that if I have something to look forward to after it, and a reason not to be out of shape, I will do better. |

enthusiastic thumbs up I just want to express my appreciation of how entertaining this bailout story has been. I thought I was disappointed yesterday afternoon when it sounded like the deal was done. I should have known the writers were just setting us up for a big twist. Everybody disappears into the big summit meeting, comes out all smiles, and... Boehner says no deal!
And oh, the sweet, sweet recriminations. Is McCain just getting in the way? Who seriously believed the House Republicans would quietly follow Bush's lead, anyway? (Let's see, aside from the War on Terra, his last big domestic policy initiative was... Social Security reform, which flopped over 3 years ago?) If the Democrats go it alone, will they double down by adding the real loony stuff, letting judges rewrite mortgages (which makes me ill, by the way)? If they pass this alone, what will it cost them in the election?

GENTLEMEN, BEHOLD Wow. I won. The Arse Elektronika Prixxx Arse Lifetime Achievement Award for excellence in... um... well, like butt plugs, or something, I guess. Now I truly understand what Andrew Wiles felt like after his proof of Fermat's Last Theorem. Really, what else can I do, now? |

Yay! I don't know why or how but my weight seems to be going down.
Current theory is that either time spent eating more than usual in Canada did good things for metabolism and now that I'm eating less and being more active I'm losing. Another possibility is that my two weeks on the wards burned a lot of calories and got my weight loss going again.
Whatever or whyever it is, I want to see this trend continue! I'm currently flirting with 175! (Been around 177 for months...) |
