WHAT? [08 Oct 2008|10:54pm]
I hate forwarded emails but this is nuts:

"How Racism Works...

What if John McCain were a former president of the Harvard Law Review? What if Barack Obama finished fifth from the bottom of his graduating class?

What if McCain were still married to the first woman he said "I do" to? What if Obama were the candidate who left his first wife after she no longer measured up to his standards?

What if Michelle Obama were a wife who not only became addicted to pain killers, but acquired them illegally through her charitable organization? What if Cindy McCain graduated from Harvard?

What if Obama were a member of the Keating-5? What if McCain were a charismatic, eloquent speaker?

If these questions reflected reality, do you really believe the election numbers would be as close as they are? This is what racism does. It covers up, rationalizes and minimizes positive qualities in one candidate and em phasizes negative qualities in another when there is a color difference.

You are The Boss... which team would you hire?

With America facing historic debt, 2 wars, stumbling health care, a weakened dollar, all-time high prison population, mortgage crises, bank foreclosures, etc.

Educational Background:

Obama: Columbia University&nb sp;- B.A. Political Science with a Specialization in International Relations. Harvard - Juris Doctor (J.D.) Magna Cum Laude

Biden: University of Delaware - B.A. in History and B.A. in Political Science. Syracuse University College of Law - Juris Doctor (J.D.)

vs.

McCain: United States Naval Academy - Class rank: 894 of 899

Palin: Hawaii Pacific University - 1 semester North Idaho College - 2 semesters - general study University of Idaho - 2 semesters - journalism Matanuska-Susitna College - 1 semester University of Idaho - 3 semesters - B.A. in Journalism

Now, which team are you going to hire ?

PS: What if Barack Obama had an unwed, pregnant teenage daughter...."

Embarrassingly, I knew nothing of the McCain/Palin schooling!
The other statements are so true, ugh

Adventures in Cultural Melting Pots [06 Oct 2008|12:07am]
HEY! I have a story.

We have a friend. She is rather cool, as that is a stipulation when hanging with us. Her one flaw that I always call her out on is her unabashed habit of referring to people by their race. I've called her out so many times that now she says she does it just to bother me. HA.
I think that she's gotten into this habit because hanging out in Jersey City there are so many races that a little white girl in small-town NJ haven't seen. I cannot accept this as an excuse though.
"Hey, what should I be for Halloween?"
"POCAHONTAS"
Now, I am not Native American, but I KNOW that the only reason she says that is because I am brown and have a lot of hair. I can ONLY be things that involve being not-white. Another example. Yesterday, I was in a Halloween circus themed fashion show for a vintage store she works at. I was a Lion tamer [if you go to dogseat's flickr, you can see pics] and a few days ago, when the store owner showed me my costume, I told her about it:

"It's very circusy. A top hat, unitard, black, blue sequined trimmed short jacket..."
"They should've found something more Indian, that would've been cute"
"....what?"
"If Meika had known it was going to be you earlier, I'm sure she could find something more Indian looking."
"I don't think there are Lion tamers in India."
"Whatever, you know what I mean"
"NO, no no I don't!! Do you mean PAISLEY, I should have a PAISLEY jacket?"
"whatever, you think I'm so racist."
"YOU ARE!"

She says the STRANGEST things!

Today, we researched halloween costumes again. And I wanted to be Madeline, surprisingly she did not tell me that I couldn't be her. Though she did seem overly eager to cut my hair and dye it red instead of getting a wig.
We ended up doing HEAVY Nick Jr.'s YO! Gabba Gabba research because I had played around with the idea of being DJ Lance Rocks. Go on youtube if you've never watched the show, and even if you have, because people post the funniest remixes and edits of that show. We cried so much watching them, check it out.
So we're all so into this and we're all so solid that we can make this happen, we can make ME DJ LANCE ROCKS.
Then she goes and says something along the lines of Dj Lance Rocks being the same race as me or something.
Um, he's BLACK.
She even muttered later this evening something about him being on the fairer side of black [?!?!?!?!].

This all reached its saturation point this evening when we went to go see ASSSSCAT 3000 at the Upright Citizens Brigade. Tonight's cast included Rob Riggle & Horation Sanz! Among other notables. Well, the show opened with Horatio Sanz and this other guy who's name we failed to remember not too soon after he spoke it. We told one another to remember to ask someone what his name was because she thought he looked familiar. La la la time goes by. Near the end of the show I try to think of ways of how to ask someone who works there who he was,
"ok...'the guy who came out with Horatio?', '...he has a beard and curly hair?' ok ok that's pretty good."
As some of you know, I sometimes get really scared of talking to strangers, so I gathered our two drinking receptacles to throw out and told her that she would have to ask because I was throwing out our trash
heh heh, I know, I am clever.
MY MISTAKE, because when I got back to her, I told her to ask the guy behind the ticket window behind her to whom she said
"What was that middle-eastern guy's name?"
I gagged.
Now here comes my revenge,
the ticket dude kind of does this cough/laugh and says
"Jason Mantzoukas? He's Greek."
in a very "I can't wait to tell him that some chick referred to him as 'middle eastern'" tone.

You see? You see why you can't refer to people by their race?!?!

Ok, so it wasn't so much of revenge as it was a little dose of reality, but I thought it was well-deserved.

Hey All,

Do me a solid, and check out some new pics I posted on my flickr account? They are from my trip to India in the summer of '06 and some holga-graphs from Puerto Rico in March. Comment, share, whatever. Life update? Maybe later.

Thanks!

[28 Jul 2008|08:00am]
Ugh it is so gray here on the east coast.
What's the deal?
All us JCists got up yesterday morning, got brunch, made our way to Mccarren park pool to see MGMT
and were depressed by the longest line in history and an impending thunderstorm.
We got off the line in search of warmer clothing, and ended up getting back on the line...ok cutting to the front.
WhATEVER
it was like 3 hours later.
Anyway, we missed the Ting Tings [boo!] but watched the raddest dodgeball game ever.
Still getting rained on. gross.
It wasn't even hot so that rain was a relief, it was just gross.
ok, grand finale:
While snaking our way out, spotted: Agyness Deyn!!!!!
Wearing a burberry trench!!! SHE LOOKED BEAUTIFULLLLL!!

the end.

Slice [01 Jun 2008|11:49pm]
Heya,

Last week was a lot of fun, what with having Emily over and the sort.
Right now, I am proud to report that I am sitting in the kitchen window of our new apartment!
I would give you a tour but I don't have a digi cam.
We even received our first postcard!
From Paris!
I really like our hood, although my dad feels a bit different.
We don't have cable yet, so no Metalocolypse for me tonight!
Why do I hear children?
Anyway, there are a lot of things still go get done...
like get a real bed? I don't know that'd be cool.
Until I save up, it's air mattress city for me!
I am going to and try to make an Idbyn table from IKEA now.
Check you out on the flip side, and if you're in the JC hood, just give me a yell.

[12 May 2008|10:37pm]
Today was such a blah gray nor'eastern day! I had lunch too early, and had nothing better to look forward to! So around threeish, my esteemed coworker and I went out into the gray to get some coffee and oxygen. Imagine our surprise when our blah, glass-half-empty day suddenly turned a-spectrum by Mr. Owen Wilson! Sorry if this makes me excited, but my coworker has such a keen celebradar and I always miss them. So this time I said, "ok, I saw that one." but whatever she's seen him before! Riding a bike to boot! If you were wondering, he looked very cute. Good for Owen Wilson! Also if you were wondering, I got a mocha.

yee olde penn station [04 May 2008|02:06am]
I'm watching "Strangers On A Train" because this is what I do on Saturday nights watch PBS really late, and one of the characters [Guy Haines] just ran through Penn Station and WHOA
does it look gorgeous!
I mean, I've seen pictures of Penn Station way back when but still. It's just so amazing how a city could have a transportation hub like that and make the choice to change it to the hell hole that it is now.

Did you know Strangers on a Train was written by the same author as The Talented Mr. Ripley?
She loved gay subtexts!!

Do you know what... I love extras in old movies.
The over-actors are a little harder to spot in newer films.

Screenprinting day! [04 May 2008|12:55am]
I went-a screen printing today at Etsy!
It was fun, I really recommend participating in the EtsyLab classes!
I went with someone from work, it was fun to hang out outside of work hours.
I screen printed on a little tote she got me from Muji. We're so funny, we kept making fun of the two couples who were in our class.
Then "THAT Class GUY" who always asks questions while the teacher is teaching, you know?
It's like, they ask questions for the sake of asking.
There's always one person like that.
One half of one of the couples kept turning to his female counterpart whenever the teacher said ANYTHING.
Like this:
"so you can blah blah blah and buy this at blah blah blah"
cut to male part of couple making a "remember that so we can do that at home" or "see, I told you we could do that" faces to the other half.
Then the other couple was just weird.
at one point, Jesse [from work] and the guy of this other couple had to go upstairs to figure out some messed up registration stuff [they had to go to Eysy Jail...hahaha] and the etsy-lady asked them how the class was going.
Jesse said, greeattt. This other dude was like "oh, it's good, but the teacher just goes too much in detail"
?!?!??!
What a jerk! hahaha it's a CLASS for people who've never screen printed before!

Ok, can someone clear something up for me?
Someone was really stunned at the fact that I had never drank and that I'd never wanted to either, never felt the pressure from anyone [I'd like to think that I have better friends than that!]. But they just didn't get it. Like, what the hell? Why can't I NOT drink? They just wanted to know every detail of every thought I had on the matter.
Like was it religion, culture etc. etc.
And also, why is it that if a recovering alcoholic was to refuse a drink and follow it with "oh, I'm a recovering alcoholic" everyone says "GOOD FOR YOOOOOoOOuuuUUU" like...ok.
That goes up there with when I visited Barnard and saw posters everywhere advertising free massages for smokers trying to quit.
Hey, how about massages for people who decided not to smoke?
[btw: I'm not a smoker hater like that episode of south park, it was just an example]

end.

oo, also I got a new phone! rock on!!!

[12 Apr 2008|12:23pm]
Saw Nada Surf last night, they were great!
They totally played all the songs I wanted to hear, and they were a ton of fun!!

We went to the relatively new venue, Terminal 5, which I've never been to. And omg, what's the deal with OD'ing on security?? I fail to see the need for hulking security guards at a Nada Surf concert.
Oh well. They were great.

muy caliente...MK PR edition! [24 Mar 2008|11:46pm]
Beunos Noches everyone!
Tonight's 12AM edition comes live from the sonorous shores of PUERTO RICO!
Kirsten [who's recounting of our tale can be found here: http://kirstendrew.blogspot.com/ ] and I have taken a spring break of sorts away from the grayness of the northeast for a taste of some vitamin D!
We flew out early this morning, we were separated as our flight was overbooked. I got to sit next to a nine year old who told me all about Puerto Rico, as she has family there and she had been there 28 times. What a liar.
Her mum gave me a nice list of things to do and see here.
This same girl told me that "on my last flight, it was terrible..."
Why?
"...the engine broke"
It broke?!
"yeah! It broke! I hated that plane ride, tee hee"

We're staying at the San Juan Water and Beach Club Hotel in Isla Verde [that's "green Island" to you yanks]. It's pretty swank and we can hear the waves, beach is right...THERE! No, literally, it is.
Kirsten and I, since we don't know how to vacation, got here, jumped on our bed, and watched "Home Improvement" ha ha. Then we got real, and ate nachos on the hotel's rooftop eatery/lounge.
Ok, then we got REALLY REAL and took a stroll on the beach.
Kirsten found a sand dollar, thought it was lucky, until I pointed out that it was still alive.
I don't know if you've ever seen a live sand dollar, but Kirsten assures me that there is no biological use for them. We came back and explored our little home away from home. It has 3 restaurants, one turns into the most acclaimed sushi bar in alllsss of Puerto Rico, on three nights. So we took advantage tonight of that [before the Hills came on and I can't miss the follies of Lauren Conrad+co.] and had such awesome sushi! Yay fresh seafood.
We visited our friendly neighbourhood walgreen's! Also PR edition.
Where I HAD to pick up "OK Champagne COLA"! Have yet to taste it, will report as soon as details come in.
Now we're going to head back inside, as we are sitting on the outdoor wi-fi veranda and being lulled into a weird trancelike state by the waves.

Trips! [27 Feb 2008|10:58pm]
Hey! First trip of '08? Puerto Rico!
Neither of us have either been, so any suggestions, though I'm pretty sure we're expected to do nothing.
Our hotel looks so cool, it's called the San Juan Water and Beach Club.

I've been really inactive here...hmmm what to talk about.
All I can really think about is work, I've been getting home really late these days. This is the first night I've been home before 9:30pm ew.
My job has two kinds of busy, fun busy, and stupid busy.
Fun busy is kind of what happens usually during the tail end of your projects when your models [hardly ever the human type] have to be shot and sometimes things go crazy wrong and you end up taking 8 cab rides back and forth...
the other is when people assume their work is the only thing going on.
ugh.
I saw Ivanka Trump on Friday morning, she looked very nice...except she had a ton of makeup on.

What else what else...
Oh yeah, I got really sick over Prez's day weekend. That wasn't nice. I'm such a bad patient. I refuse to eat or drink, I make weird noises, won't get up etc. etc. I don't know what exactly I had, some kind of minor flu virus thingie.

Gillian from Project Runway has grown on me.

Who was psyched that the song from "Once" won an oscar??? I love that movie, and all the songs were so good.
so cute that he played the same guitar from the movie.
aww

I totally just heard Loney, Dear + I'm from Barcelona in some car commercial!

Heath Ledger [24 Jan 2008|12:41am]
I could go on and on about Heath and how upsetting this all is.
But I'd rather bring up how insanely fast news of his death spread...I mean, it made me sick that people were down at his apartment taking PICTURES when he was removed from his apartment. Tasteless.
When we found out about it at work [via the temp's blackberry], we jumped on the internet and couldn't find anything. So hoped it was just a rumor and everyone began to talk about how they see him "all the time" [side note: totally not fair, Seriously, everyone BUT me had some story where they saw him somewhere downtown].
Then details began to post, we realized that it had hardly been an hour after a TOD was announced, who the hell took it upon themselves to spread the word? It's so sad that his family found out through the media.
I think this celeb death is a little different than any I've experienced, mostly because of the many people in the city who have actually met him, all can attest to the fact that he was genuinely a nice guy.

Mark [10 Jan 2008|10:31pm]
Today, my Sah-weet old work pals came into the city to have dinner with me!
sah weet!
We looked very colorful.
We couldn't think of anything to do after that, so we went back to NJ to see MARK who lives in IKEA!
http://www.marklivesinikea.com/
He was very cool, and a little awkward.
We didn't have to take our shoes off when we entered his ikea abode.
Next time we stop by, I think we should bring him socks or scones.
he moves out on saturday I think.
