J (the bf): [After explaining RNAi and the difference between how siRNA and miRNA work.] And then, there's also shRNA.
R (the bf's roommate): What, is that like "shitty RNA"?
Me: No, it's short hairpin RNA.
R: That sounds like a Final Fantasy Tactics accessory or something. I have a short hairpin!
J: It gives me +38 RNA degradation!

Me: Hahahah, OMG I have to write this down. You guys are such dorks.

And I'm back from Massachusetts! ...wait, did I even post that I would be gone? I've somewhat lost interest in posting on my LJ, although I've had it since I was a freshman in undergrad.
Some highlights of our road trip:
- Finding a place in Gainesville that does oil changes for only $15.
- Being exposed to Dr. Demento stuff on the way there. Polka-dot undies! Bulbous bouffant!
- Seeing the "Entering Marion" sign as we neared Cape Cod (also a song featured on Dr. Demento).
- Touring Woods Hole. Clam chowder & lobster. Yum.
- One of the most enjoyable weddings I've ever been to, and also the first gay wedding I've ever attended.
- Going to Martha's Vineyard not to sightsee, but to play disc golf (seriously-- who else does that?). During this escapade, a deer tick crawled up my leg and I freaked out. Unfazed, the bf merely flicked it off me before it could burrow its head into my flesh and possibly infect me with Lyme Disease.
- Seeing giant, frightening 100+ foot crosses in Virginia that were lit by floodlights. Pardon me, but that strikes me as a very strange and wasteful way to express one's faith...
- Visiting Seb in Asheville, NC on the way back. Awesome hiking & scenery.
- Adding 3000+ miles to my car, OMG!
I'll probably add more to this list as I remember it. |

Z: "Where is N____ from?"
Me: "I dunno, but she speaks French. Maybe she's from Haiti. Or France."
Z: "France has black people?? I thought only America and Africa had blacks!"
Me: "Um... Dr. McKenna's from England, and she's black."
Z: "She's not from South Africa?"
Me: "I'm not sure, actually. Well, J____'s British, and she's black!" (She's actually from the British Virgin Islands.)
Z: "..."
Me: "What? It's not like everyone who comes from China is 漢, either!"
Part 2:
Z: "Have fun in Massachusetts! Take lots of pictures of the wedding!"
Me: "Um, okay, I will..."
Z: "Is it going to be in a church?"
Me: "Considering it's a gay wedding and that the grooms are both Jewish, I'm not sure. I think it's at a resort."
Z: "I thought all weddings had to be held in churches!"
Me: "Oh, hell no!! I refuse to get married in a church!"
Z: "But in movies, weddings are always in churches..."
Me: "Thankfully, movies aren't real."

So, on my way to work this morning, I was stopped behind a green SUV in the left turn lane, waiting for a turn arrow. The driver opens the door, drops a bag of trash, and then closes his door.
W. T. F.
I honked, but unfortunately the arrow turned green just as I honked, so the litterer may have thought I was just some crazy Miami-style driver. After turning, we were on a 4-lane street, and the driver proceeded to drive IN BETWEEN OUR LANES (above the dotted lines) just barely below the speed limit. After my hoking at him, he was clearly trying to get a rise out of me. Rather than get upset, I simply stayed in my lane and proceeded with caution.
I have no words. Just... wtf. |
