| Man, that makes for a long weekend.
The weekend was pretty much completely swallowed by post-mortem activities for CONvergence. Yesterday was the Convention Commitee Post-Mortem and Volunteer Party -- and since in all likelyhood many of the people will next be seeing me when the transition is complete and I'll be a director, there was some groundwork already started for changes that we know we need to make for next year.
The Volunteer Party was crazy packed. I've been to conventions with fewer people. And it was interesting that now I had more of the people who know who I am but I don't necessarily know who they are that's sort of inevitable when you've got a more visible role.
On Sunday, we had the directors post mortem. This is probably something that isn't very visible to anyone who hasn't been a CONvergence divisional director, and one of the important parts of it is that the directors are very honest about analyzing the survey comments, concom comments, and our own personal reflections about what worked and what didn't work. If you've got doubts that constructive survey comments or concom comments aren't seriously considered -- especially when critical -- this is really where these things come out. It isn't necessarily looking at implementation at this point -- that's what will happen over the next year -- but identifying all of the many issues and avenues for improvement for our organization.
It's brutally honest as each director is forced to address and evaluate their own successes and failures over the last year. I don't think it's good to bring out all of the dirty laundry and air it here in this post -- that's not what this is for -- but I think it is worth mentioning how much this happens, especially as those of us who are incoming directors have to look at what transitions mean for the organization and how we can keep the systems in place that has made CONvergence successful for the last ten years.
I'll admit that I'm a little anxious to get the post mortem process done at this point -- there's still certainly a place where this seven month transition makes you feel like you're spinning your wheels waiting for things to happen, and you want to get started and look at the issues we need for the organization and convention for the next year. And there are various things that we have to look at in the six months that we can really address coneptual and policy issues before we get to the six months before the convention when implementation really has to be the top priority.
I'm tired, and should get to sleep. I've got enough restless energy that it'll still take a while... | comments: Leave a comment |

| I've been fighting a cold for the last several days. It's that borderline miserable where I'm not-quite-there, but not really terribly sick so I can go through the motions of the day. It also combines with mild allergies -- which are really more annoying than anything else -- in unpleasant ways. So, a bit annoyed by that.
I took yesterday off, so I could sleep in late after seeing The Dark Knight. I'm taking it easy this morning before I have to pack for the rest of the weekend -- which is sacrificed to the gods of the CONvergence post-mortem and volunteer party. (And the post-mortem process is much longer for directors and directors-to-be than anyone else, obviously...) | comments: Leave a comment |

It's kind of odd to be a part of a video project like that -- even just on the sidelines for most of it. (There's one role where I'm, well, undercover...)
I've got a lot of different emotions and thoughts about the sketches. I think it is very useful to have something that energizes the Opening and Closing Ceremonies. And I can certainly see (and agree with) the value of making the people with responsibility for the convention visible -- and ideally accessible. And I think it's most important that it is entertaining in some fashion. | comments: 4 comments or Leave a comment |
