Personal - Me - Kissable
WELCOME
Welcome to my journal, and thanks for coming. This journal is not friends-only; I lock and filter only occasional entries. The content I post about varies between my personal life (school, work, friends, more school), memes, music, civil rights issues, and intense geekery that remains under a geek-only filter because I am full of nerd shame. If I already have you friended and you would like to be added to my geek filter, just comment here. Warning: you may already be on the filter. If you see posts about animu and shit, I have you added. Check here to browse my lists of series I'm familiar with and/or currently reading.

ABOUT MEI
If you check out my meme tag, you can find out some stuff about me, but I'll lay out some basics for you here as well. I'm a 21 year old gal from southern Ohio, USA who is a secular humanist Jewish lesbian feminist. I have a fiery passion for music (listening and performing), stories (reading/watching and writing), and art (enjoying and creating). My tits are huge and my hair is long. My favorite foods are matzot balls and latkes. I speak a good amount of Spanish and a passable amount of Japanese. I'm really good at sleeping a lot, getting distracted, and being judgmental. I've gotten more laid-back in recent years but I can still crank my bitch dial up to 10.5 if it's necessary. I'm sort of lewd and I cuss a lot. I'm secretly quite paranoid. I love making people laugh.

LET YOUR DREAMS RUN FREE

I NEED AN OBAMA ICON.

So Mom and I did make it to the rally in Cinci yesterday afternoon! We got there just after the gates opened to wait in line for shuttles to the park, and it was already packed, there was a huge line. One of the people behind us said that one of her friends was already at the park and it was packed as well. We waited in line for the shuttle buses from 1 PM to about 3 PM (there wasn't enough parking room at the park Obama was speaking at, so people were instructed to gather at a small airport nearby). The speaking was supposed to start at 3, but the event had drawn way more people than the organizers had expected so it was delayed a little bit until they could get most of the people there. The event started shortly after Mom and I arrived; the first speaker was Ohio's governor, Ted Strickland, and after that was some woman no one knew and who no one could hear anyway.

THEN IT WAS OBAMA TIEM! He came out and people went crazy. From where we were, he was only a tiny speck who stood out because of his shining white shirt (it was shining with the purity of his soul). Fortunately Mom bummed binoculars off of a kid nearby and we got to see him much better, although it was only for a moment. That was all we needed though, and after that we switched to a location where we could hear him instead of see him, since there was a band of teenagers right beside us that wouldn't shut the fuck up, and we were far away from the sound system.

The speech itself contained a lot of the stuff we've all heard Obama saying since he accepted the candidacy, and especially during the last couple weeks re: the economy, but it was really cool to hear it in person, to hear that he's just as good a speaker every day of the week as he is at these events they show on television. I had heard some of the speech on NPR the day before so the end of it was a little anti-climatic, but the part of the end I hadn't heard was really wonderful. More than anything else, it was a great feeling to be around so many other people who were there for the same reason and who wanted the same things, especially since in this part of Ohio a lot of us can often feel like we're alone or in the minority next to conservatives or those who are very apathetic.

The downside was that after the rally, we had to wait another hour and a half for the shuttle back to the airport, and the wait was in the boiling sun with no water. One older man got heat stroke or something and the medics and an ambulance had to come. The transportation was pretty poorly organized overall, and it was hot and there was lots of waiting before and after, and most people didn't get anywhere near Obama, but the fact that a shit ton of people were willing to come anyway made it feel really good and special. I'm glad I went, it'll definitely be something to remember.

We didn't get very many photos, since we found out once we got there that we weren't allowed to take in cameras with telephoto or removable lenses (which is what Mom has, and I didn't bring my camera), but Mom did get a couple photos of me in the line waiting for the shuttles. They aren't very good ones, but [info]vejiicakes said PICS OR IT DIDN'T HAPPEN, so [ here is a pic of me looking grumpy and chubby ] while I dream of Moses Obama.

---

In other news, when I tried to get a ride to the Dayton rally yesterday morning from someone in my class, all the kids in there looked at me with faces that said, "Why would we ever do something political? Are you kidding yourself...?" At first I felt like the biggest tool ever, but then I was like, oh, right. It's the other way around. Ha ha.

One kid in my class is constantly calling things gay. I still can't bring myself to say something to him and make a spectacle, but I think one of these days it's going to happen before I can stop myself. Also, I never mentioned this, but during one of our first projects I was paired up with this guy named Eric (who happens to be 20) and we had to brainstorm and come up with lists of things that matched up with certain adjectives. Well, one of them was "bubbly" and he wanted to put "gay guys." I said that was stupid and I was not going to put it. He asked why, and I pointed to the rainbow triangle on my purse, and he was like "So? Gay guys are bubbly and happy and stuff, it's not an insult or something." Was it dumb of me to be all serious-business about it? It just struck me in an unpleasant way and made me upset. Like, if there was an "ugly" category, would he have wanted to put "dykes?" I know many stereotypes stem from some amount of truth, but jesus christ. You have to... know how to deal with them. It's a complicated game, and he was playing it clumsily.

This school is definitely no better for queers than Miami. In fact, it might be worse since it's so small. OH WELL.

Shit, I missed the entire second half of September posting-wise. Not much has been happening aside from school... I should make a habit of posting while I'm sitting around waiting for my dad to pick me up after classes. Aaaand let's pretend that I don't really have to wait for my dad to pick me up after classes.

Tonight I am going to an Alanis Morissette concert with [info]midara_mind and I could not be happier about it. I really hope it's a good show, since I've been a fan for so long and have been meaning to see her. I forget who's opening but I hope they're good. Honestly I really want to see Ben Folds and Rufus Wainwright live again as soon as possible, since they've become my live artists of choice/tradition (why BNL haven't made it onto that list I will never know), and Ben might be coming around soon since he's releasing new stuff this month, but who knows when I'll see Rufus again. (Alas, why didn't I get to see them perform "Careless Whisper" together in Brooklyn?! Maybe because Ben was sick.)

Speaking of that gayest of Wainwrights, for a web design project in school I'm doing redesign concepts for his website, which is atrocious in more ways than I can speak about right now (for starters, if you blink you'll mistake it for a Wordpress blog). As much as I've always wanted to play with site design, this shit is fucking hard. The first time around I basically ended up sketching out something that was the same as what is on his site now, making me want to punch myself in the face. It's been pretty fun doing various sketches of Rufus though, and I've gotten a handful of complements on my thumbnails. Huhu.

In other news... Well, here's a point-by-point list of "other news:"

+ I've been listening to practically nothing but Incubus and Rufus Wainwright for two weeks
+ I've almost beaten Ocarina of Time and Majora's Mask now, and I wish I had a Wii so I could take on Windwaker and Twilight Princess
+ My brother and I found a ton of bitchin clothes of my mom's and grandma's (plus some our uncle designed and made) when we were cleaning out the attic last weekend, and I am going to rock them proudly as soon as I get the chance
+ I miss my friends and brother
+ A LOT
+ After tonight, I will be as broke as a very broke thing... no idea what I'm going to do about the holidays,
+ which I am spending with my aunt and brother in GERMANY, something I learned shortly after my mother's birthday party at the end of August
+ [info]yeah_itsme is making her traditional pre-holidays visit to our humble household, much to my delight, and I am going to force her to read Majin Tantei Nougami Neuro because it is right up her weird, silly-yet-macabre alley
+ I've decided I don't like Bill Maher, after viewing two of his HBO specials, a few interviews, and an episode of Politically Incorrect - he is a pompous, arrogant asshole
+ I suddenly realized I only have about two people left who I can talk to about weekly SJ chapters, and that's only Bleach - I HAVE NO ONE TO TALK TO ABOUT WEEKLY ONE PIECE. WHAT.

In that case, I'm going to make a fandom post now... which is something I haven't done in forever. Bye!

Finished my first ad today for school. :) I'm pretty proud of it. We had to look up brand logos on this one website that has vector images of logos for free download, and I stumbled across the logo for Ayumi Hamasaki. I didn't find logos for anything else I'd rather advertise, so I decided to do an ad for her Complete Singles collection since the timing is fortuitous. The requirements for this ad were the use of only one color (black counts as a color) and only one font family. I chose Pantone 119 C and Myriad Pro. This ad was made primarily in InDesign CS3, with peripheral help from Photoshop CS3 and Illustrator CS3.

There will be peer critique at 1:45, I'll probably update sometime afterward with the results of that. I'm anticipating stuff like the fact that I didn't put the record label, website, or price of the albums on there (forgot about that stuff until I had already printed it out), and maybe confusion over all the white space, but I'm fond of a lot of negative space and I intentionally weighted most of the substance of the ad to the bottom.

In any case, glad to see this one completed! Happy weekend to me.

EDIT: Critiques went pretty well. I did a lot of critiquing of others, since a lot of the class seemed to just want to say nice things and what use is that, so once I came around I was expecting some revenge on their part. It didn't really happen, though. One girl did mention all the white space, and how everything was on the bottom, but I explained that the negative space was on purpose and the teacher said it worked really well, and the rest of the class consequently agreed with her. [info]kotszok, a couple other people said it looks like a movie poster, and a few more said that it "screams 'Japan'". One girl said she could easily see it on a page of an Asian magazine. The teacher seemed like a big fan of the ad in general. All in all, I'm quite pleased with myself.

Hey all. I am SO SORRY I've been MIA this week, classes at school have not allowed for much messing around in the past few days. It's not that we've gotten crazily busy, but we've just been constantly doing something. If you want to talk to me while I'm here, you can get on GoogleChat or on the Facebook messenger, those ones get through the connection here and I'm always on GoogleChat.

I need to catch up on LJ games so bad, I apologize to those I'm in games with. I need to friend all the new MM people, and WAFY!Shinji has been begging to play. I've just been so tired when I get home that all I want to do is play Flash games and fiddle with my music. Speaking of which, I should post to [info]blessingoflove as well. D:

Congrats to Tokio Hotel for winning Best New Artist at the VMAs, I know there are some big TH fans on my f-list. The awards were pretty much a joke, and usually are nowadays (even my girl xtina stooped to lip-synching, but at such a farce of a show I'm not really too upset about it). Lupe Fiasco didn't even get on the main stage and there's no video of his full performance, which pisses me off. Kanye was pretty good though; he and P!nk were the performance highlights (she rocked it with a broken rib, you go girl). As for Russell Brand, I love this man to death and he's one of my favorite British tv personalities/improv comedians, so it was a huge disappointment to me that he didn't have such a great show the other night. I was hoping he could make a big positive impact on the US crowd, but the fact that he was a little off his game plus a big chunk of the audience (and the viewing audience) not being ready for his forward humor made for somewhat of a flop. Don't worry Russell, I still love you! And Jordin Sparks (along with all those Disney kids) can eat a cock.

As for Britney, it was good to see her look a little classy again. Out of favoritism I wanted Mariah to win Best Female Video (plus that video was lolz), but she has enough awards to last her a lifetime already. Even if those awards were full of shit, it's not too bad that Britney won them. She needs some good publicity. Yeah, I know, half of you are probably wondering when I turned into a big fucking Britney fan, but she's been in the media almost as long as I can remember and she's not evil or anything, so it's hard not to root for her when her life is such a trainwreck.

In other news, do I speak for all queer women everywhere when I say that Katy Perry should fall off the face of the known Earth? Jesus christ.

I USUALLY DON'T DO THIS BUT

Personal - Me - Not Farting
Once again, I haven't updated in a while. A lot of stuff has happened, I suppose... I really should have updated to say that I left my phone at Susan's house after we got back from Chicago, but I know some of you figured that out the hard way, eheh. I have it back now, which is great, and I'm going to Oxford to hang out with Susan and the other Oxvegas lovelies this afternoon. You bitches better make some time for me!

Yesterday was my first day at saa. It was a half day, and we didn't have any classes. We just filled out some waivers and surveys and stuff, went over school policies, and then got TONS OF SHIT. I swear, it was like Christmas in July (August) yesterday. I finally got my hands on my new MacBook Pro; it is a thing of wonder and beauty. So fast, so pretty. I got the 17" wide model since I'm going to be using it for design, and the smaller screen on my iBook always irritated me when I was working in Photoshop. It's nice to have a computer that's meant to run Leopard, everything is very smooth. I know it, too, will be old and clunky someday, but today is not that day. |D The keyboard lights up in low light! This shit is wild!

I also got a ton of art supplies and a new digital camera. 8D Technically we are paying for all this through tuition (I'll be weeping into this light-up keyboard in two years when I'm trying to pay off loans) but we do get major discounts through the school, especially on all the software. Speaking of which, all we're doing today is installing tons of software. I've never seen so much Adobe on one hard drive, hahaha. Not complaining! *3*

Last week was [info]midara_mind's 21st birthday party. We had a DELICIOUS dinner at The Spaghetti Factory and then went to Dave & Buster's. Our plan was to get drunk there, but we discovered that the drinks were expensive as shit, and being the broke bitch that I am I was not about to buy more than one (I got a kamikaze and it was delicious). We played games for a while (I had an awesome time shooting the crap out of zombies with Brandon) until Wife decided that it was her 21st goddammit and she was going to get smashed. So we hopped in the car and went driving around searching for booze... but we were highly unsuccessful for a long time until we finally went to Kroger. We got a bottle of Mojito and a pack of blue mystery shots, but none of it was very good, and once we got back to D&B, Wife and her friend Kye (sp?) wound up getting drunk on tequila and jager at their bar anyway. Wife in particular became hilariously drunk and stumbled around winning tickets with Kye while Brandon and I killed more zombies. She informed me the next day that she later threw up like crazy and she, like me, will now be avoiding tequila like the plague.

Oh, btw. I have discovered that the only instant messaging service I can use at school is Google Chat. I heard from someone that Y!M also works, but I haven't tried it yet. I'll let you all know when I do!

Going to Columbus this weekend for Mom's birthday, Fri-Sat. Her birthday is the 29th. It's her 50th! She doesn't look it. Dad's looking 50 nowadays, but that's okay since he's 60.

Hmmm... I think that's all the news?

in memory of koko ball: 1992 - 2008

He died over the weekend, while I was in Chicago. I found out Monday evening when I got home, because my parents didn't want to ruin my trip. We knew he was sick, his kidneys were failing, but he had suddenly developed diabetes as well and when he was brought to the vet his blood sugar level was 25, and combined with the kidney failure it made him impossible to save. Yes, he was sixteen years old, and that's a good life for a cat, but this has still been really hard on me. All week I've been thinking about him and my other cat, Preston, and missing them sharply. The two of them were what my childhood was made of, they were with me the whole time and I can barely remember a time without them. Now that they're gone I'm confronted with a tangible end to my childhood, and it's a bitter pill to swallow.

They were truly amazing companions. I don't believe I'm idealizing them due to them being my childhood pets; my parents, who have had various pets throughout their lives, also say that they were the best cats they've ever known: beautiful, loving, and full of personality. If I ever find cats even half as wonderful as they were, I wouldn't be able to complain.

I'm really sorry I've been so scarce this week, everyone. I've just been sitting around playing Pokémon and watching Samurai Champloo (Chels, it's INCREDIBLE. Why didn't I watch this earlier?). If you ever want me to get on AIM to chat with you, just email me or message me on LJ, I'm probably online.

OH, and update on my mom: With bad news comes good news. The problem with my mom's liver is NOT more hemangiomas. It's a hernia in the place where her liver was operated on the first time. Still sucks, and she still has to have surgery, but it's nowhere near as worrisome as more growths would have been. We're all very relieved. Plus this means she can schedule her surgery for whenever's convenient for her as opposed to having it ASAP.

PS: If anyone is interested in looking at a few pictures of the cats, I started a little album for my pets here. There are only 19 pics right now but I'm gonna add to it, like more pictures of Darwin and pictures of our other dog, Beauty.

PPS: Thank you to everyone who has commented with kind words. I don't know what to say to each and every one of you, but I just want to let you know how grateful I am for the support, you're all so sweet and I don't know what I would do without you. :')

I WATCHED ALL OF AVATAR!

Seriously guys. I blazed through that shit (thanks to [info]kyrakitty). Favorites by far are Iroh and Zuko. Also Sokka. Now I need to arm myself with some good icons and fanworks. If anyone has any recs, bring them on. Oh, and I know I wasn't waiting a million years for it like everyone else, but as far as the finale goes, I thought it was pretty good. Yeah, I was a little grumpy with the "morals of the story" but it's a kid's show, and for what it was it was pretty awesome. This is America, you know. EVEN ASIA corrupts their children faster than we do.

This evening after art class, Susan is picking me up to go to her place, and tomorrow morning we're setting off for a little trip to Chicago! We're staying at the apartment of a friend and we'll be there for the weekend. There's a sort of pride festival going on there and I think we're gonna have a lot of fun going around the city in general. I hope the weather there is as nice (or nicer) as it is here right now. I actually need to pack and stuff soon. I have no clue if I'll have internet access in Chicago or not, but I will have my phone, so if you need me feel free to call. My number is on my Facebook profile if you have me friended over there.

In more depressing news, my dad told me this morning that it looks like there's more crap in my mom's liver. )

...so yeah. In conclusion, you should all join [info]mallowmateys and/or [info]wearefuckyou. That's right, I actually joined a panfandom game. Only [info]kyrakitty could inspire such madness. I play Shinji (of course) at WAFY and Isaac Dian (Baccano!) at MM, plus I'm probably going to pick up Katara there. Kyra plays Kensei at WAFY and Sokka at MM, and is going to pick up Miria Harvent (Baccano!) for me.

if you're eyeing WAFY i really want an aizen, urahara, and mashiro! at MM i would love an ennis (we have a firo for you)!

I SURVIVED MY FIRST DRIVING LESSON.

The place I'm taking lessons at is in Kettering, same place as saa. My lessons are two hours each. I drove around town for the whole two hours, on the roads, in traffic, the whole shebang. I was so tense the entire time that after not too long my back was hurting like a bitch. The instructor kept telling me to relax, he was probably reminding me every ten minutes. It seemed like I did alright though, and hopefully next time I won't be freaking out so much. I was so exhausted afterward, I felt like a braindead limp noodle for almost the whole car-ride home. Mom said she was really proud of me though. It was recommended I take 3-4 more lessons, and on the third one I'll be going on the highway.

Going to see The Dark Knight with Susan tomorrow. Hope it's as good as everyone's been saying! Tickets sure are expensive now though, jesus. I really need to get one of those jobs I applied for.

I spruced up my MySpace page since it was sitting around getting moldy since about April. If anyone on the f-list has a MySpace page I don't have friended, feel free to add me as long as you send me a note along with the request telling me who you are on lj. My profile is at myspace.com/pirateinpink. I mostly use Facebook, but I know a lot of people either have one or the other.

Currently reading The Wind-Up Bird Chronicles by Haruki Murakami. I'm about halfway through. It's wonderful and I'm already interested in getting other books of his. It has a really interesting combination of slice-of-life realism and a fantastical, dream-like quality that fits the protagonist's personality well, and the entire cast of characters is extremely compelling. The language is simple but profound, and seems to be translated well. I don't really know who would be on a list of similar authors, but I do recommend this highly to all of you; it will appeal to fans of fantasy, historical fiction, mystery, and drama alike. There's something in there for everybody.

SWIMMING IN YOUR LOVE

Bleach - Shunsui - Dreamer
I am getting worse and worse at updating. I actually have a lot I could write about, though... I had a really busy and wonderful weekend this past weekend, spent three days and two nights in Cincinnati with Susan at her house in Over the Rhine, and we did stuff like go to the Northside 4th of July parade, go to a party at her friend's house which included swimming, sit on the roof of her house and watch the neighborhood, buy a dog named Buddy from the SPCA, and watch fireworks on the bank of the Ohio river. The last item on that list was probably the most amazing thing that's happened to me all summer; we were almost right under the bridge the fireworks were being launched off of, and I could feel the explosions through my whole body. All kinds of fireworks were happening all over the opposite bank in Kentucky beforehand and during the show. On top of everything, right after it was over we noticed that [info]tigersfury had been sitting almost right next to us the whole time, and we all freaked out. What a crazy coincidence.

On Sunday we had a birthday party for my dad's 60th birthday, which Susan came to, as well as [info]midara_mind and her fiancé Brandon. It was really nice to have Will home for a while too, I keep forgetting how much I miss him when he's not around. The food was great as always and we played corn hole (yeah, I know) after we ate. Dad schooled everyone, although the Susan+Will+me team won in the end somehow.

Today was a crazy day. I had a chiropractor's appointment, a counselor's appointment, and an art class. All three went very well and were actually quite enjoyable. My art class is a life drawing class. Hopefully I'll be able to scan in the stuff I do in there somehow so I can share it. We did fast gesture drawings with charcoal and india ink tonight. I was better with the charcoal, I think, but a couple of my india ink ones were okay. Tomorrow I have another chiropractor appt at 10:30 and on Saturday I have a different art class in Kettering at 9:00 or something. A lot of getting up early but I guess I should get used to it before the fall.

I also want to join the Queen City Rainbow Band, which I saw perform in the Northside parade, and I met one of their members at the party Susan and I went to afterward. Joining a musical group that's not affiliated with school would be really good for me, I think, and I would like to play my saxophone again. They do parades and they also have a jazz band.

I'm going to do a post about my current thoughts on various geeky stuff slightly later on, so stay tuned, those of you who care.

PS: Happy Birthday to everyone on the f-list whose b-day has gone by recently, I'm sorry I missed you! To those of you who are going through hard times, my thoughts are, as always, with you. I am reading your entries and am wishing the best for you. I'm sorry I don't comment more.

Also, thank you to many of you for keeping me friended; I know I can be horrible about commenting, and I've been particularly bad this summer. I'm the type that loves to keep old friends on the list, though, and it's nice to know that perhaps there are others who are the same. It's always nice to see familiar faces when I check the list.

STORMS

Personal - Me - Wash Over
It's been storming for about two days straight now. Spring storms are my favorite kind of weather. Last night we had a tornado warning for a couple hours, though, and mom, dad, and I were stuck hanging around in the basement until 10:15. There was a watch until 3 AM but we didn't have to stay down there until then. It kept storming all night, of course, and into the morning, and there were warnings for all kinds of other storms, and hail further north. For about ten minutes I've been sitting in front of my window watching and listening to the storm and smelling it. That's the best smell. I wish they had storm-scented perfume.

Personal - Me - Not Farting
OH MY GOD I HAVEN'T POSTED IN FOREVER. I am so shitty at this lately. I just don't have anything to talk about in the summer. I sit around and listen to music and do nerdy shit and watch some TV... I'm gonna be learning how to drive soon, so that's something. And I've been going over to my grandma's house which makes me feel like I'm in high school again because my brother and I always used to go over there after school every day. I weeded her garden last Wednesday and on Friday I went over to eat dinner and borrow some music. We watched Juno, The Daily Show, and the Colbert Report, and we rocked out to Meat Loaf and Janis Joplin when we were in the car. I am ADDICTED to Meat Loaf lately. You better know who he is, because if you don't, what the fuck.

BLEACH -100 OMG // ignore this, non-nerds )

HAPPY BIRTHDAY [info]kittycow!

You've been here as long as Caer, good on you!

PS: Here's a totally random little poem I thought up while I was walking around the house last night. I don't even know, haha. Seriously.

she liked to put ice cream on her nipples because
it was sweet and sticky.

it made her feel delicious and dirty;
who would not want to taste me? she thought
and who would want to touch me afterward?

One Piece - Luffy - Feel Fine
So since a little before the break started I've been surfing around fanart sites and seeing some really amazing things. Most of the old sites I had had bookmarked were dead, so I looked for new ones/ones I hadn't found yet, and I've been really happy and impressed with some of the stuff I've seen. Up until now I've mostly been looking at Bleach sites since I bookmarked a Bleach fanart search engine that's really easy to navigate if you can read some Japanese, but I've just gotten started on regaining some One Piece bookmarks as well (thanks, btw, to [info]emlan & Artoholic for helping me get started with that). You can check out all my very favorites on my journal's new INTRO PAGE. Here are a couple of the best of the best to start you off -

do not use this art for any type of graphics. this is not your art! be respectful!

IF YOU HAVE ANY RECOMMENDATIONS FOR ME, whether it be an AUTHOR, ARTIST, LJ COMM, or SERIES, tell me here! I am eager to see some awesome new things! (Don't worry though, I'll still love my old goodies.) OH, and also, does anyone know how to do that html where if you hover your cursor over an image, text pops up? I want that to display the fandoms on each fanart site in my recs post since it's too much of a hassle to sort them (they all have multiple fandoms).

FUCK YEAH. FUCK YEAH.

Music - Koda Kumi - green heart
1. Open a music player.
2. Go to 'all music'/'library'.
3. Hit shuffle/repeat/randomise.
4. Find photos of the first 15 artists/bands that come up (no repeats and no cheating).
5. Have people guess who the artists/bands are.
6. Paste this in your journal and do it too, so I can have fun guessing as well.
