I can attest that it's pure, unmitigated laziness. In fact, I'm so lazy that, now that I'm here, I might as well make this my new blog. DONE! This is prime real estate (virtual estate?). -Shawn

BLAAH'S BOOK CLUB
(Anonymous)
2003-06-14 07:27 am UTC
(
link
)
Also, bloggers, note that the first session of BLAAH'S BOOK CLUB will take place on MONDAY, JUNE 23. This the book I'm currently reading, and if some of you would like to dive in as well, a lively discussion (in the tradition of a good Bob Chambers class, which I never had the pleasure of taking) is sure to follow.
The book is "Into the Great Wide Open," by Kevin Canty. 244 (breezy, fast-paced) pages.
"Mr. Canty creates a spell of unsentimental enchantment.... He precisely captures the precarious nature of life on the brink of adulthood." --NYT
"A beautiful book--both enchanting and painful." --McPaper (aka USA Today)
"Superb...pitch-perfect.... This is one of those rare novels that treats sex both lyrically and seriously." --Time Out
If anyone wants to borrow my copy, let me know. I'm almost done. UNTIL NEXT MONDAY! --Shawn

For those of you that have been following this blog, you might be wondering what the prize was for the QUESTION OF THE DAY last week. Well, you're not going to be disappointed.
For the record, "Deez Nutz" and "Gay Black Jewish Nazi" both answered correctly. You will be receiving your prizes shortly via snail mail.
In the future, the QUESTION OF THE DAY prize will go the contestant with the FIRST correct answer. I feel like
Dickie Dawson
(http://www.angelfire.com/celeb/richarddawson/).
QUESTION OF THE DAY 6/15:
What is an aptonym? Bonus: come up with one.

NAME MY BLOG!

I've gotten some useful feedback regarding this blog. It appears that it's total lack of organization makes it less than user-friendly. So, perhaps I should actually just start a full-power blog, complete with different sections, indices, and editable formats. Comments/ideas?
Also, the most important part, of course, is having a clever, memorable name, which can, and may have to, make up for the sometimes inconsistent, lame, and otherwise unremarkable content. I just used 9 commas in one sentence!

"The Collection" Bessie Smith
"Bob Dylan/The Band" Basement Tapes Vol. 1
"Figure 8" Elliot Smith
"Live, Vol. 2" Velvet Undergound

July 9th Focus on Freedom in Iraq
(http://www.andrewsullivan.com/index.php?dish_inc=archives/2003_06_15_dish_archive.html#200431075)?
/~lucey/blog
(http://www.ma.utexas.edu/~lucey/blog) might. Not that I have any current intention to, but if I ever decided to visit, say, Tehran, a government that is, at a minimum, supporting diplomatic relations with the U.S. would be required. A freer Iran seems requisite for that to happen.
I'm curious as to who else (foreign countries, the U.N.) would pony up funds. What are the expected financial and, presumably and unfortunately, military costs of proposed plans? What "scouting reports" do we have on influencial people and groups that would step up to assume power? If presented with an opportunity for democracy, would the Iranian people support it? If Iraq cost the U.S. $220 per head (I think that's the figure, how accurate is it?), how much would this be? How many of my friends and acquaintances would have to go over there?
Of course, W.W.A.W.K.D.?

PARK PLAZA
(Anonymous)
2003-06-19 07:37 am UTC
(
link
)
I usually visit Park Plaza, my old stomping grounds (well, really my current stomping grounds too), on Wednesdays, to take advantage of dollar-off-used-cds day at Record and Tape Traders. Spent a good 40 minutes listening to cds there, while wafting in the scents of the various incense sticks underneath the listening station: Sandalwood, Coconut, Strawberry, I think, and looking at various humor magnets on the refrigerator adjacent to it: "Varsity Swimming" with a picture of some spermatozoa, various Osbournes pics (speaking of which, all Osboournes merchandise is HALF OFF! I *almost* got
Kelly
(http://suprmchaos.com/kelly-osbourne_091802.jpg)'s album, which was four bucks, I think, but then thought the better of it.)
Best listen: Lamb "What Sound."
Check 'em out
(http://www.allmusic.com/cg/amg.dll?p=amg&uid=CASS805131620&sql=A3n8n1vs4zz9a).
Also, Nathan might be interested in this
article
(http://slate.msn.com/id/2084479/) regarding Steely Dan's new album. Money quote:
"Fagen said in a recent New York Times
interview
(http://www.nytimes.com/2003/06/12/arts/music/12POPL.html) that he regards all Steely Dan albums as "comedy records to some degree," and of course he's right. Fagen and Becker are not Lou Reed; they have no urge to wallow in the
miasma
(http://dictionary.reference.com/search?q=miasma)."
Also, Dennis might be interested that Chocolates From The Heart, where they make delectible truffles of all sorts (well, made), is GONE! (A sign said they'll be back, but I'm not getting my hopes up.)
That's all for now. -Shawn

Just a friendly reminder:
BLAAH'S BOOK CLUB
starts Monday. Again, the book is "Into the Great Wide Open," by Kevin Canty. If you, like me, don't have any plans nailed down for the weekend,
give it a try

Also, don't forget to play the

He's my new favorite Austinite. (He just moved here!) Now I wish I went to law school. Now I wish I had real absinthe, some ho's car, and an empty donut shop.

What an auspicious open for today's triple witching! Or is it? DJIA is still strong, but the NASDAQ is now down six after being up 9 at the open! What does this mean?
Plus, PSFT is still going to reject ORCL's bid!!!! Are they crazy??? Who wants to join me and black knight this mofo? Let's see: the $19.50 offered by ORCL, minus today's PSFT price of $17.60 = $1.90. That's good enough for me. C'mon, who's in? Who's got a couple billion to bankroll us?
Who thinks Alan's cutting rates .5% next week, raise your hand. OK, put 'em down. Who thinks it'll be a quarter point? -d.n.
