Hooorah... [07 Apr 2008|10:59am]
[ mood | accomplished ]

So I finally got my PS2 fixed and bought some accessories to make the living room look more organized despite my frequent presence there playing (i.e. wireless stuff). I also started to canvass for PS3 package offers. With any luck, I should be able to get one two months from now. With the rate this console churns out games, I guess I won't miss out on much in two months (though I hear that MGS4 is due out soon.)

With the advancement of gaming consoles comes the issue of hardware reliability. Currently number one for the most poorly designed console is the 360 with units failing left and right. Second is the PS3 with 2 out of every 10 units failing after 1 month. Fine, it is a race. But I hope that these companies don't sacrifice quality and common sense just to get the next big console out. I would rather have a 10 year gap in between consoles if it meant that the next one was sure to work for a prolonged time (I never had these problems during the SNES days). But then again, I also have to factor in the gestation period of new technologies. I suppose that a decade is too long for a console.

I dunno. I just wish that I could once again feel as comfortable buying a PS3 as I did when I bought my SNES a long long time ago. The worst thing we had to put up with back then were controllers breaking down left and right and that was more because of my brother and I mashing buttons for our Street Fighter pride than anything. And it sure as hell did not cost as much as me going to Greenhills to have some part of my PS2's drive assembly replaced (although it did turn out to be much cheaper than I expected).

Here's what I think companies should prioritize when making a new console:

1) Hardware reliability - Sony and Microsoft had to churn out billions of dollars to calm down the public when the first batch of PS2s and X-Boxes broke down left and right for major design flaws. Form factor be damned (although I wouldn't want my console to be as big as my TV). If a slightly bigger console means better heat dissipation and hardware longevity, so be it.

2) The price of dev software - Companies won't be as eager to invest in your console if the development kit is very expensive. The PS3 suffered from this in the beginning. More interested parties will increase the chance of grade "A" games.

3) Gameplay - In my humble opinion, we are reaching a threshold that will take a long long time to break in terms of graphics. PS2 graphics are great. 7th gen console graphics are fantastic. But at the end of the day, if the gameplay was crap, then you essentially just have a glorified Blu-ray player. Nintendo caught on to this with their Wii. By no means is their AGP superior to the PS3 or the 360. But it's the innovative way to play games that attracts more people. The six-axis controller of the PS3 is another good example, adding another dimension to the tried and tested PS controller design.

If they get these 3 right, the rest should in theory, follow.

Man I love team-ups... [23 Mar 2008|02:22pm]
[ mood | Geeky ]

My favorite Anime Mecha title has been around for over 25 years now. And up to this day, most anime fans will agree that the closing battle found in Macross: Do You Remember Love was one of the most beautiful space battles ever rendered.

It was the perfect culmination behind the mecha title's premise. And while it was not initially the top song of the charts for its time, Ai Oboete Imasuka sent chills down the spines of loyal fans and eventually new converts as well and it continues to do so up to this day.

But more than Macross, I would have to say that the Japanese Mecha genre (as opposed to the US general rendition of bulky juggernaut-like behemoths) is something that has captivated the hearts of many. Gundam and Macross are considered to be the founding fathers of this genre. So it is exciting sometimes to think about what would happen if the two worlds found each other. Actually, what would happen if Gundam, Macross and several other very popular anime mecha titles existed in the same world?

And what would happen if they all helped during the final battle against the Zentradi?

Man, I love team-ups. It merits repeating: MAN I LOVE TEAM-UPS.

50 points to the one who can name all of the titles featured here without the aid of wiki. Ü

Didn't quite think that was possible... [17 Mar 2008|03:00am]
[ mood | annoyed ]

So okay, I was having a great time playing further into Another Century's Episode (ACE) 3. The ACE trilogy is basically what you get when you have a company like Banpresto muster up the rights to A LOT of anime mecha titles and have the guys from Fromsoftware (the guys behind the Armored Core series... yes, that is their name) breathe life into the said titles. If you're a fan of the Japanese mecha genre, then you're bound to have geekgasm after geekgasm with this game. With me in the cockpit (hehehehe I said...), Macross pwnz all other titles.

But I digress.

I was in the middle of unlocking the remaining mechs in the game when I suddenly hear some audible mechanical difficulty in the disc bay. And before I knew it, the game hung. And after several attempts to reset the machine, it became apparent that the disc drive for my PS2 gave in.

Oh my God, I played my PS2 to death.

I'm certainly not in the mood to get a new one seeing that I am saving up for a 7th Gen console. However, I still have quite a number of hours left before I consider my PS2 days over. With Greenhills reformatted like a new PC, I have absolutely no idea where to get this rugged PS2 of mine fixed. Suggestions would be welcome at this point as again, I don't know of a shop that I can trust.

You're a brilliant person, Tzi. You just need to learn to listen more.

Those were the parting words of my former supervisor during my last night in McCann. He wasn't there due to some business with the GMA network (probably talking to them regarding media slots for the Coke ads). But found the time to call me up that night and impart his share of wisdom to me.

I initially thought that, this flaw of mine only applied to work - that outside the walls of McCann, I was more or less a good listener. Last night however, I discovered that there are times that I'm not. Even worse, it happened when somebody needed me to listen the most.

I am not a good listener. But I want to learn to be one.

Yikes... where did that come from? (More comic book ranting) [08 Mar 2008|12:39am]
[ mood | annoyed ]

In my previous geek-lined post, I ranted about how death, which is often a manifestation of great sacrifice has been reduced to nothing more than a reset button or fresh coating of turtle wax for a comic book character. For the most part, how the plot device is overused greatly trivializes the great sacrifice us readers are used to seeing from our beloved heroes.

Nevermind that they're gonna die, they'll be back in a year's time.

Sometimes however, characters don't have to die for them to get screwed over by the writers.

Now, as many of my friends know, I am a DC fan. That is to say, I love DC characters very much despite how I am slowly getting fed up with how Didio and Levitz are handling the company (PUMAYAG NA KAYO SA BAGONG BATMAN/DAREDEVIL CROSSOVER YOU SONS OF BITCHES). My admiration for history's most iconic comic book chracters is independent of how the company of origin is being handled. And as my friend Arvin knows, while I have immense respect for the other company, I am not the first person you should approach for any shred of Spider-man fandom. But man, even I have to sympathize with they crap Marvel pulled out of their hat with the recent One More Day and Brand New Day arcs.

To summarize, our favorite web-slinger has matured over the years. And from 2006 up to the present, we have witnessed Peter Parker put forth great sacrifice for the greater good albeit split ranks with the recent Civil War. But when Aunt May is threatened to suffer the same fate as good old Uncle Ben, for some STRANGELY CHILDISH and SELFISH reason, Peter decides to strike a deal with Mephisto to save the Golden Oldie. Now Mephisto, just because he is Mephisto, says okay dude, I'll help you but it'll cost ya.

And what do we get?

People have forgotten that Peter Parker unmasked himself during Civil War, Aunt May being denied the long-deserved send-off, and one of comic book's greatest marriages, equal to Clark and Lois and 2nd only to Reed and Sue, IS UNDONE. Yes, Mephisto re-wrote history so that Peter and MJ only dated for so long but went all so wrong when they tried to tie the knot.

PUSH BUTTON TO RESET THE FRANCHISE SCREW THE CHARACTER OVER BY MAKING ALL OF HIS SACRIFICES POINTLESS.

What. The. Hell.

It's a coin-toss for me regarding who churns out more crap from their brain. Is it Didio and Levitz from DC or is it the insanely craptastic editorial job of Joe Quesada from Marvel?

Somebody please knock some sense into these guys and hopefully restore my faith in both companies.

Of comic book characters and death [21 Feb 2008|03:24am]
[ mood | contemplative ]

Okay, let's forget for a moment that I am a Batman fan. Furthermore, let's put aside the fact the internet is abuzz with the rumor that DC might kill him off in this April's issue. Yes folks, so it would seem that DC plans to kill one of their biggest cash cows, their warhorse, the character whose debut comic title is the namesake of the company. I don't even wanna go into details, but suffice to say, if they DO KILL HIM, it's a frickin bad move on so many levels from a marketing, business (did I mention his character is a cash cow?) and creative/literary perspective.

A little over a year ago Marvel killed off one of its greatest comic book icons. And unlike Superman, Wonder Woman, Hal Jordan, Jean Grey (*cough* Phoenix *wheeze* Overused Plot Device *pants*) Oliver Queen, Jason Todd (the 2nd Robin), Thor and everybody else who has known death and conquered it, the guys at Marvel said that this one's permanent. Steve Rogers is dead and this political statement has an indelible period. But now so it would seem that, in a not so amusing or entertaining fashion, even Steve's death might not be so absolute after all as, SURPRISE COCKFACE, Marvel's Earth was slowly infiltrated by the shape-shifting alien race of the Skrulls that stole/ took the identity of most of Marvel's heroes. With the invasion starting years ago, it raises the question of who's really dead, and is there any validity to the great stories Marvel fans have been reading since. Was it really Steve who died?

Even my home universe of DC is not immune to plot twists that rewrite history with universe-shattering 'Crises' that undo deaths left and right. But one need not even look to the horizon for some major event to see how DC has overused the death card (did somebody say Lazarus Pit?). Some resurrections, I'll tolerate - that Superman's Kryptonian physiology opens the window for rebirth, that Diana, as the creation of Gods is not stopped by death as with Thor. But if you do kill Batman, somebody who is nothing more than the peak of human perfection (translation: somebody with no ready excuse to just rise from the dead), how do you justify bringing him back? Then again, Jason Todd was also just human AND WE ALL KNOW HOW HE TURNED OUT YEARS AFTER JOKER PUT HIM SIX FEET UNDER.

Perhaps this is a result of the recent rumor mill regarding my favorite comic book character. Maybe, this is just a panicked fanboy talking. Regardless, I cannot help but wonder if there is still any meaning to the concept of death in the realm of comic books. To what end will you hype up one of your characters by killing him?

We live in interesting times. We now see more of our beloved comic book characters taking jump to television and taking the leap to the big screen. Heck, even our favorite Saturday morning cartoons are steadily migrating to Hollywood. It is for the most part, GREAT.

But what of the original medium? What is happening to the monthly stapled collection of visual and literary art we call comic books? Sad to say, it's been on a steady decline for the past years. As with other genres, fewer people are actually inclined to pick up something they have to read no matter how simple. Why read it when you can see it in full animated glory in the big screen?

I'd hate to think that these deaths, whether they really have any meaning or not and regardless of their permanence, are a result of desperation. Hey, please read our comic book or we'll be forced to kill the character.

Some might argue that it paves the way for innovation and reinvention. But frankly, after putting up with so many cosmic events these past few years, I gotta say, that all I'm looking for is a simple but solid plot. It doesn't have to be big. It just needs to show our beloved characters for who they are amidst the fight against evil - that Batman is indeed a master detective who can unravel the most tangled of plots, that Wolverine is the best at what he does (no matter how ugly it supposedly is), that Superman is the paragon of the light of good against the darkness etcetera, etcetera etcetera.

Nickelback's song says it perfectly - that personally, I'm just looking for something that will...

Show me what it's like
(To be the last one standing)
And teach me wrong from right
(And I'll show you what I can be)

Reading our blogs!? Huh... [28 Jan 2008|02:52pm]
[ mood | contemplative ]

I guess, it was just erroneous of me to assume. It's just that, they don't look like the type to maintain Multiply blogs. But yes, apparently, they do. Our clients at Coca-Cola maintain blogs. And they troll through the blogs of my officemates for any possible dirt they may have written on it.

Buwehehehehe... That's just odd.

I guess, this is where maintaining a Livejournal account comes into play. It's nothing spectacular like Multiply (although Livejournal does have a lot of nifty functions). But at the end of the day, I can somewhat customize my layout and I can effortlessly write on it. More importantly, I can write anything I want and client can't see it and just make it all awkward next time I see them. On the Multiply end of things, I am only connected to one of my officemates. So the only way client were to find me in Multiply is if they found the right officemate, wormed their way through her blog and figured out that I am a Batman fan. And even then, I did not leave any dirt on my Multiply account (as I don't use it very often). Nor did I leave any possible link to my LJ blog there. So yeah, it's gonna take quite a while for client's to find this. Hopefully, they'll lose interest before they do.

Don't get me wrong. They may not be the best of clients, but I have come to respect them for their work ethics and their strength of character. After all, they gotta have something special in them for such high positions in Coke. And over the past two months, I have gotten the chance to talk to them not as clients, but as fathers, as husbands, as wives, as sisters, as human beings.

Even more interesting is how they effortlessly carry over their marketing mindset to everyday situations. Like my IMC professor told me, the lessons you pick up in marketing can be brought everywhere else in your life. But to actually see people who exemplify this is another experience altogether.

At the end of day, the most important lesson I've picked up from advertising is this:

Say exactly what you mean, to the appropriate person, using the most suitable of gestures, at the most favorable of times and using the most ideal channel.

I just hope I can bring this out of the workplace.

4 months, 40 passes, countless hours of lost sleep.

And then it boiled down to 5 mins of my life.

It started out as a pest of a project. As if coming up with a design that would satify Coca-Cola wasn't hard enough, imagine the headache of designing for Coca-Cola AND SM. Towards the beginning of the holidays, the only thing I wanted was for this project to finally get out of the way. Give it to clients and be over with it. So you can imagine how pissed I was when I was told that we had one more deliverable: the 5 min presentation to Henry Sy Sr. and the rest of the SM officers, their business partners and countless government officials.

The anger quickly turned into excitement when it became a collaboration between me and my mentor. I was determined to make it work out.

Come last Saturday, I was already running on only 4 hours of sleep over a span of 4 days. I was desperately seeking for some confirmation that what I was doing was worth it. And it came. It came by 8:13pm with Henry Sy Sr. raising the first Coca-Cola SM Commemorative Can off the production line in front of 2000 of the Philippine's most powerful men and women.

The SM 50th Anniversary Commemorative Cans. Collect all 3. Ü

It sent a chill down my spine and goosebumps all over my skin. That was my project being raised triumphantly by the Philippine's King of Retail. That was my work being celebrated by SM, the higher-ops at Coca-Cola and, whether they liked it or not, the Pepsico Representatives who were present as well. Hehehehe...

My mentor had a talk with me. "This is just a sample of what can happen if you stay. Are you sure you want to leave?"

I don't know the answer to that question yet. But I do know that for one night, I slept with a huge grin on my face.

All was good. All was well.

What do to... [12 Jan 2008|02:19am]
[ mood | contemplative ]

Hahahahaha... Quite the dilemma you got yourself into huh, Tzi?

It was a regular Friday night for the Coke team. As the annual sales convention of Coca-Cola drew near, everybody in the Coke team geared up and manned their respective battle stations. But of course, that doesn't stop us from taking a break at around 7pm if only for a light dinner and a couple of rounds of beer.

We sat in a dimly lit corner in the 12th floor "mess hall." We try not to talk about work while within the premises of the dining floor of the GT tower. I just find it kinda odd that granted we didn't talk about work, out of all the things we could possibly talk about, the team talked about the most sadistic thing they did to an animal as kids... That or the most sadistic thing a friend of theirs did to an animal at some point in their lives. I narrated what my friend, Pat Badong did to a cat once... At the end of the discussion, it was a unanimous vote that his was the most sadistic deed of all. Congratulations my friend, sikat ka na sa Coke team. Ü

After dinner, we went back to our floor to wrap up the night. Akalain mo ba naman, the girls ended up dancing to Madonna's "Like a Virgin" and Right Said Fred's "I'm too sexy." And don't even get me started on the Shakira song...

I smiled, I laughed. I took a good look at each and every one of them. These were the people who became the most used pigments in the painting that was my last 5 months. We got stressed together, we got drunk together and we worked our asses off together. And in their own special way, the have left their mark on me.

I guess, I realized that in two months, there is a distinct chance that I might not see these people ever again.

It wasn't the product that I handled. Nor was it the prestige of the company who hired me.

At the end of the day, it was the people who made me smile and made me happy amidst all the stress, exhaustion and volatile tempers.

And as I left the office last night, looking back at my team mates still dancing to random songs and making me smile, I realized:

I'm gonna miss you guys a lot.

Gen Wang, the patient mother figure I had - my group account director and my boss. The woman who, along with Francis Chua, my direct supervisor, took me through my baby steps.

Francis Chua, my account director who didn't hesitate to toss me into the frying pan. He also made me appreciate having an eye for detail.

Lianne Salcedo, my cubicle mate, who by the grace of God, was able to handle my geekiness and sat through my random bouts of geek musings.

ER Rafael, Sharon Cuneta look-alike and tangkera extraordinaire. Probably the most veteran member of the team, she's one of McCann's biggest assets.

Lot Eligio, AE with a musical taste that is distinctly her own. She reminded me how to appreciate my provincial roots.

Ria Buenafe, the supposed black heart of the team who, despite the high-pitched girly voice, manages to plan our demise in a painful and elaborate fashion. But of course, I know her to be quite the opposite.

Yettie Dalmacio, my older sister in the team who I'd run to whenever I needed advice regarding my work.

Jho Ragus... I wish you'd follow-up the payments instead of me. I mean, that IS your job... No but seriously, saludo ako minsan how you handle not just the insanity of the Coke team, but the rest of McCann as well.

Aya Montebon, former MTG player who now handles the Coca-Cola teens campaign. She loves pussies... cats that is... Also pregnant with her first baby. I wish her all the joy in the new chapter of motherhood.

Shalimar Salomon, fellow comic book geek like Gen who goes out of her way to watch the Avatar in the middle of the ad congress.

And finally, there is the fashionista of the team, Myrrh Cortes. Hyper, fabulous, and eye-candy all at the same time. Huzzah.

I will sooo miss you guys when this is all over... Haaay... Ü

So Tzi, baka gusto mo ng insurance plan...? [04 Jan 2008|03:32pm]
[ mood | contemplative ]

I suppose I should say that I'm too young for this kind of thing. But the strange thing is, that's not what I think at all.

This is a very weird day for me. It's a day where I find the future knocking on my door, and my past skeletons gently peeking out of the closet. It's nothing distressful I suppose. It's just weird, that's all.

The future came in the form of a female representative from Philam Life. McCann Erickson being the sensible company that it is, apparently has an agreement with the said insurance firm. She laid out several possible plans for me to pick, and all I had to do was decide. Medyo nakakapanibago lang. I sure as hell want to be a good provider for my family if God would bless me with one. I guess I didn't plan on facing the question at this point in my life. I repeat, its almost never too early to start investing in an insurance plan. But at this point, I just feel that I'm not ready for this. Translation: binabarat ako ng McCann!

The past wasn't so corporeal I'm afraid, but no less real. It was a reminder. By the gift that is our objective correlative tendency, I was suddenly reminded of some mistakes which I have put to rest. But needless to say, these are mistakes that still make me cringe at the very thought that I actually committed them.

All in all, both served as a wake up call - an invitation to reflect. I found myself assessing my life at this point, seeing if it measures up to my expectations from before, using several different criteria. Honestly, I don't think I've made full use of my time so far. Nor do I think that I'm entirely happy with my current status. I want more. In al honestly, I feel that life has so much more to offer. And I find myself thirsty for just that. (Yuck, pati ba naman sa personal reflection, beverage yung analogy ko. Damn you, Coke... Buwehehehehehe...)

Walking down video game memory lane... [28 Dec 2007|09:22am]
[ mood | Walking down memory lane... ]
[ music | Shogo MAD OST - Red Riot ]

Recently, I dug up a video game from days gone by in only to bask in its now faded glory. It was a great game albeit it was more of a niche game here in the Philippines. My only other fellow fan here if memory serves was JC Alelis and that was because we were both desperately seeking a video game to give us our Macross fix. I tried to get my other friends to like it, but at the time it was already overshadowed by games like Half-Life and its Counterstrike mod.

No, I am not talking about a game based on the Macross franchise. But it's something that's almost as good.

SHOGO: MOBILE ARMOR DIVISION

This kind of game was unheard of back then. Who would have thought that a small AMERICAN company like Monolith would come up with a well-made, anime-esque mecha FPS? This game had it all: a sizeable amount of mecha action (and TRANSFORMATION!), cool weapons to leave burn marks of your opponents on a nearby wall, revolutionary graphics for its time, rich futuristic environments with impressive architecture, an excellent futuristic techno-rock soundtrack (which I am listening to right now - I tell ya, when I think of futuristic music, I think Shogo), great anime-inspired art, a good mix of drama and humor in the dialogue, and a good coherent story.

Gone are the days when I'd drag my friends to the now defunct shop of CD-Romania just to play a network game (it was the only shop in the Katipunan strip that noticed this game). And even in between our few multi-player games, I could play and replay this game for hours on end.

Move over Mei-Ling, long before MGS's resident Chinese hottie was even a bleep on my geek fanboy radar, this game was already treating fans to it's own Kathryn Akkaraju (dont let the art in the website fool you, the in-game art is WAAAAY better). And the kind of flirtation and come-ons between the main character (Sanjuro), Kathryn and Kura(Kathryn's sister and Sanjuro's EX) that Monolith got away with for a TEEN ESRB rated game was simply mind-boggling.

But of course, past the pick-up lines and sexual what-have-yous that herald back to the days of Ranma lies a good compelling story. It's nothing great. But at least you know and feel that the writers did their homework and some extra credit. And the voice-acting was something any gamer would be proud of indeed (ahem... Resisdent Evil... hope this is not Chris' blod... cough... wheeze).

But of course, the story is jack shit without the main feature of Shogo: the mecha action. For a starving Macross gamer fan, it was the next best thing. 2 modes of humanoid form and vehicle mode, a nice array of FPS staple weapons and then some and of course, who can forget that one weapon, the obligatory BFG-type Red Riot? Not only did it KILL EFFICIENTLY, but it actually left imprints of your sorry opponents on the street or on the wall depending on where you unloaded the GODDAMN TACTICAL NUKE. And if your ears werent sharp enough or if you were unlucky enough to have crappy speakers, you would't know it was coming since it was near instantaneous (and that my friends, is the early roots of the art of "SURPRISE COCKFACE!")

So there you have it folks. I suppose few of you, if any give a rat's ass. But then again, I don't either. Here's a cold one for you Monolith games, thanks for the memories, and I hope you guys aren't really gathering dust over there.
