Hurricane Katrina Relief: Poppy Z. Brite and family (unofficial) (updated and moved back to the top)

At the suggestion of [info]mekkavandexter, (Amber van Dyk, Ideomancer editor, short fiction writer extraordinaire, and [info]docbrite fan), I am pimping a highly unofficial cause here today. As some of you know, [info]docbrite was forced to evacuate from her home in New Orleans, leaving behind most of a large family of rescue animals.

For those of us who participate in animal rescue, this is an unimaginable grief. We tell ourselves every time that we can make a difference for this one, that this animal who has suffered--usually a good deal--will be safe and protected now. We talk about "forever homes" and we suffer for the ones we could not save.

She wasn't going to go. She was going to stay with her animals, and she was talked into leaving in the 11th hour, and I for one am glad.

But there's no telling what she's going to come home to.

Like many writers, Ms. Brite lives on a shoestring, and money is always an issue. So we thought it would be a nice idea to take up a collection for her and her critters, to assist with the inevitable and scary expenses.

Right now, because Amber hasn't yet worked out how to get the funds to Ms. Brite, she's only taking pledges. The email address is 9thward@gmail.com. Eventually, there will be a paypal address, but considering that Ms. Brite is mid-evacuation, it doesn't seem the time to bug her about it.

ETA [info]greygirlbeast confirms the following paypal address for donations to Ms. Brite: funkyegret@yahoo.com

Please note: Ms. Brite is totally innocent of this, and has absolutely no knowledge of our efforts. If she should happen to refuse the assistance, any monies donated will be forwarded to Noah's Wish.

Please feel free to link or pass along this information.

ETA Pursuant to above, in comments [info]feyandstrange offers a link to Ms. Brite's Cat Food Donation Paypal Account.

I suspect she would not mind a boost about now.

Comments

As per my own earlier relief post:

http://www.poppyzbrite.com/cats.html

that's the old Web site of Poppy's which has a PayPal link to donate towards cat food on it: the PayPal goes to this email address: funkyegret@yahoo.com . I'm too poor myself to do more than get the word out and dump the change jar into the Red Cross via CoinStar, but every little bit helps.
and, duh, excuse very tired me:
feel free to pass that info on, since it's already pretty publicly available on said web site and may make things a lot easier for the organizers, and POppy and family too.

also, feel free to link to or repost that post of mine for alternatives, especially the CoinStar bit, since I don't see that one making the rounds yet.
thank you.

re: Poppy's paypal

I have also emailed Caitlin Kiernan as she will (hopefully) be in contact with PZB, and can confirm with Ms. Brite if she would like any donations to go to that address, or if she would, indeed, rather we send money to the animal relief organization.

Thanks for the link,

Amber.

Re: Poppy's paypal

It makes a difference for this goddamned starfish, dammit.

Re: Poppy's paypal

I saw a photo online of this agency rescuing people and their pets. Maybe they could rescue Poppy's cats -- can you pass this on to Caitlin, as I'm sure she knows her physical address and maybe get them to ontervene for a rescue?

Thanks so much for flagging this up. I'll be doing what I can to help out.

Oh, I do hope she can get back soon, and that the disaster is limited...my heart hurts for her and for the animals.
There are two communities for discussion of her current work, [info]prime_liquor and [info]nextroundsonme. Would be good to cross-post there, where the fans are itching to do something to help.
Feel free to cross post and propagate. I'm not involved in either of those communities, and as far as I know neither is Amber, so it would be a little uncouth to walk in and start asking for money, I think. But yeah, by all means, spread it around.

yeah--uncoooooooth

i thought it might be as well, but a member recently posted about sending money to PZB, so I just replied to her w/ our current plan. I believe this thwarted the uncouth ;)

Re: yeah--uncoooooooth

You are clever!

prime_liquor

thanks, I have posted the information in PL. :)

Re: prime_liquor

tah dah. You are the rock. *g*
I pledged a hundred. I wish it could be more. I've been thinking about her and her animals ever since I read her entry--linked on a news site. I don't know her but I know she is a wonderful person and a great writer. I've been hugging my pets like a maniac all week--it seems almost surreal to find them safe and dry, and to be living comfortably in a standing house...
thank you.
I looked at my budget yesterday and put it on a strict diet when I found I had saved less than half of my goal for this year, and most of this saving is for charitable purposes. So I decided I can always pledge again if I can donate more. It seems very little, but it is very true that every little bit helps.

:)

bless you :)

I will be going through the pledged emails tonight (gmail doesn't work at the office here..for some reason) and advising people that they can come in on the group send or send individual donations. The donations should, as Bear mentioned in her addendum, go to the funkegret paypal address.

take care :)
Amber

Re: :)

I am just sorry it can't be more.

This scenario has haunted me ever since I read about the man who died trying to save his cat from the Oakland fire (oh, if I had only missed that story). I've got it so I can actually look at my animals for more than five minutes at a time--for years, I couldn't--and such organizations as Noah's Wish have helped with that. For me, Poppy as Flood Mom is up there with the Peace Mom in my prayers.
Hello, would you be interested in allowing people to reproduce the text of this post for their own posts in an effort to get the word out wider (as opposed to merely linking here)?

Thanks.
Sure, see above:
