More details
I tried to update earlier, but my internet connection ate the update. That's okay.

I parked my car around 5 pm yesterday evening, and the police called at 6:55 am to tell me that it was stolen and wrecked. Apparently, the guy was caucasian, about 6'1" with blonde hair. He was wearing a black jacket and blue jeans. I'm guessing that he had another car nearby to transfer anything valuable into. I didn't really have anything worth a lot in the car, but he had obviously gone through the car pretty thorougly. He did steal my jumper cables, though. Jerk. A lot of the plastics were removed on the dashboard - I think he was trying to steal my stereo, too, but it's still there.

(Side note: If you live nearby and sell things on eBay, you're welcome to meet me at the tow lot tomorrow and remove the stereo to sell. You wouldn't have to give me very much for it. I don't think there's anything else that's worth money in the whole car.)

He got to the Renton Highlands (about two or three miles away from where it was stolen) and then hit a tree and rolled the car. The front of the car is completely mangled, the windshield is cracked, and the airbag had deployed. To Saturn's credit, the passenger compartment wasn't crushed at all.

My tennis rackets were still in the car (yay!) but, as I mentioned, he stole my jumper cables. I had just put them in the car yesterday, after working on my motorcycle. Grr. I'm a little frustrated that I spent $800 on repairs to the car less than two weeks ago, but I couldn't have known that this would happen. They did encourage me to get new tires, too, so I'm glad I didn't do that.

Also, I didn't have comprehensive insurance, so my insurance company is not giving me ANY money. However, I think that if I had paid for comprehensive insurance for the four years since I bought the car, I would have paid more than $2000 extra - and that's about what they would have given me for the car if I had had comprehensive. But still, frustrating.

So now I need a new car. Brian and I carpool most days (except Tuesdays - he leaves work early to golf) and I have my motorcycle, but I think that's still not enough. I had been thinking about buying a new car - I told Adam the other day that I would probably buy one in the next year - but I really wasn't planning on buying one NOW.

I'm happy to take advice on what sort of car I should buy. It'll probably be something similar to my old car (a 1994 Saturn SL1), but I'd like something newer (1998 or newer, probably) with less than 50k miles. With power locks and power doors. I would prefer a manual.

Maybe a 1998 Audi A-4 sedan?

Re: New car
Tempting, but probably more money and upkeep than I want to deal with. I'm evaluating my options...

you can get a very reliable, very practical Toyota Corolla, mine is 2003, for under 12K dollars with under 15k miles. power everything. i suggest that, it has done me very well.

it seems many of my friends have been going through car break-in shit recently. i wish i had more anything to offer, hun.

as your president of SAE for two year...

I fully endorse the Corolla. =P

But it sounds like you're making dough... so you might as well take out a mortgage and get a Lotus Elise (I endorse those too).

this response has nothing to do with the fact that I drove a 2003 Corolla nor the fact that my dad works for Toyoya.

Sneaky man.
Jus-10[info]js10coastr on August 2nd, 2005 04:30 am (UTC)
it has nothing to do with the fact that it gets 40mpg highway, and has been said to have "some power" by Brian and Malia... and called "a Lexus compared to my Civic." by Keith.

Nope none of that either.
Little Miss Can't Be Wrong[info]margotheangel on August 2nd, 2005 04:31 am (UTC)
Hmm, Keith's quote there is interesting - I've been considering getting a Civic. So a Corolla is definitely better?
Jus-10[info]js10coastr on August 2nd, 2005 04:58 am (UTC)
yes, 03 and after AC and power door locks are standard on the Corolla. And the fit and finish are maybe a step higher. Just a bit more refined in the sounds and general feeling of the car.

And this doesn't have anything to do with the fact that Keith drives a Civic and I drive a Corolla and that my opinion is biased.
Little Miss Can't Be Wrong[info]margotheangel on August 2nd, 2005 04:28 am (UTC)
Hahaha, I knew you were going to give me an interesting idea. =)

I am considering something like a Corolla, though. I'd LIKE something else, but I need to be practical, especially since I wasn't really planning on buying a car so soon.
Jus-10[info]js10coastr on August 2nd, 2005 04:32 am (UTC)
... you'd probably want something more like the Mazda 3. It's practical and has "zoom-zoom".

Or maybe the Ariel Atom http://www.arielatom.com/

fuck that shit. be practical. heh. it snows and shit in Seattle, if the salt rusts your Lotus, you'll kill yourself before it's stollen.

OUCH!

Well, I hope the thief did some damage to himself in the process.

I frikkin hate thiefs (hey, watch your credit.... co worker had her car stolen recently and on top of it they found stuff to steal her ID too so then she had to get that all cleared up on top).

NO! don't get a honda, and for fuck's sake don't get a mazda. or a saturn. or a kia or a hyundai for that matter.

VW is a nice ride, it really is. if you get the german made ones, they're pretty well built too. They don't have as much of a rep as hondas for getting stolen around here, but I'm still hesitant to recommend it because of that.

I love my subaru to death, I really do. It never ceases to bring me joy and happiness. I have a 1997 Outback Sport (impreza w/ backpack.) All wheel drive (good for snow, very nice cornering/general handling) subaru boxer 4-banger (reliable, powerful 2.2liter) spaceous, manual transmission. plenty of cargo space, 4-door, sexy (I have alloy wheels.) Good ride

Corolla's not a bad idea, I don't think they're terribly popular on the thievery scale. Much like a honda, possibly more comfy, maybe a little more powerful. Very well built I think, I'm not a big fan because it's so plain... in my opinion, but it's a good car.

One other thing... I got ABS with my subaru, and I'm totally in love. My honda slid all over the place, and with ABS + AWD, my subaru handles a bajillion times better. highly recommended. That is all.
