Bizarre sign

This is one of the most bizarre signs I have ever encountered. The sign is comical in itself: stick figure rides up the escalator and bumps his head on a hanging sign, the impact causing VIOLENT RED RAYS OF PAIN. Beware! All is well and good until, armed with a newfound caution, you look around for the offending object and realize that IT'S A SIGN ABOUT THE SIGN ITSELF.

It's located above the midpoint of the escalator between the 2nd and 3rd floors of Greenbelt 3. The logic behind the existence of this self-referential sign escapes me! What is it for? Why is it there? Did whoever put it up realize that if there were no sign, there would be no need to warn about it? Is this a joke from the developers? Is it a lesson in recursiveness? Is it a philosophical prop? What does it all mean? Why are WE here?

Owwww, my head....

EDIT (04/01/2006):

Oh dear. It seems I have been boingboinged [via MetaChat] and now the sign is all over the Internet.

But as I told the boingboing dude:
To answer your question: no, there was nothing different on the other side. Even if there had been, the view would have been blocked by the stone pillar behind it (see photo), and even if there hadn't been a pillar, it was hung too high up to be viewed clearly from ground level. I took the photo from the main vantage point most people saw it: standing right next to it on the up escalator, a mind-boggling surprise the first time you see it. :)

I am unhappy to report that the sign was taken down a few days after I posted about it. It made me very nervous to see it gone (it had been there for a couple of years), wondering if my LiveJournal post had anything to do with its disappearance, either taken down by the Ayala mall admins or stolen by a fan. Then the day after that, the sign was replaced by an identically-shaped transparent plastic board. It's nothing but a ghost of itself now - a sign-shaped sign with nothing on it, which is, in a way, just as funny!
NOTE 1: It has since been discovered that the sign is just a blocker to prevent people from leaning over the escalator and getting their heads caught between the narrowing wedge of the escalator rail and the metal rafter next to it.

NOTE 2: As to be expected when things like this hit Photoshop geeks' desktops, somebody has edited the sign so as to make it even more self-referencing.

NOTE 3: More photographic evidence of the sign here and here.

NOTE 4: Just how far will this craziness go?? Let's see!

NOTE 5: OH DEAR LORD. Somebody had enough mindless boredom to make a YTMND page. o_O

NOTE 6: (11/02/2007) Uh oh, reddit gives the sign a new life.

An annoying little kid was decapitated by that sign two years ago. It's true. Pass this forward or the ghost of the kid will haunt you. And you will never find true love/money.

Bravo! Thank you for noticing. Those signs make us laugh whenever we see them.

I also remember back in college I saw a caution sign that was small and unclear. So I had to lean closer to understand it, thereby bonking my head on an overhang as the escalator continued moving up. I think this was at one of those little malls in Manila -- a Gotesco or Isetan or some small SM.

Actually, I know why they did this. I once saw a kid sticking his head off the side of the escalator get caught in the gap in between the railing and the upper floor. There was much blood and screaming. (So raymz is right). The next week, they put a sign up just like that one so that, presumably, stupid kids will bump into the sign first, and pull their heads back in mild pain rather that being decapitated by the wall up ahead.

wahaha..

there is another sign like this although in glorietta 3. it actually isn't a sign but it is shaped like this one and is meant for you to bump into if you lean over the escalator railing. he he he

the r2d2 thing is some sort of decorative light chuvaness eklavoo.

the meaning of this sign:

"this sign alarms stick figures" or
"proximity to this sign causes esp"
"red mohawks will be cut off"
"takeshi castle sign"

lolz.

My guess is that they put the plastic board so people won't lean their heads to the side of the escalator, inbetween the escalator and the wall.

This reminds me of a small sign bolted to the side of a huge steel smelting blast furnace - the kind where you can feel the heat radiating from fifty feet away - that reads: "Caution. Hot."

It occurs to me that it might not be a warning at all, but rather a comment on what happened. Like "Dude! You just stepped in a puddle!" instead of "Dude don't step in that puddle."

its not a sign for the hell of it

they put barriers to stop people leaning over as they pass between floors as they can get their arms caught between the ceiling and the arm of the escalator

that's what the perspex part is for, although the situation shown hardly necessitates having one at all. these are common on most escalators, usually in the form of a series of plastic arms that move as you pass, to serve as a warning to the danger

hm, weird., if the sign was mean to be "bumped on" to prevent a child from sticking his head out of the escalator, wouldn'it be more logical to put a parallel plexiglass barrier between the escalator and the wall? at least no one will get hurt at all..

but this is more amusing..;p

The sign is parallel and to the right of the escalator (this is beginning to sound like the magic bullet theory), so it's probably meant to indicate the iron girder approaching fast on your right, the stickman is not suffering pain from an impact, but a sudden exclamation, like when beads of sweat are drawn coming off a cartoon character's head in surprise, surprise at the iron girder.

Someone thought there was something on the other side of the sign but if that's true, and if you look at the picture you'll notice that the person would see the other side of the sign before knowing not to hit their head on it, since the sign makes it appear that it is an "up" escalator...
