    Yassous from Greece
Just a quick note to say that I made it to Greece in one piece. Yesterday we walked around a bit and went to the Temple of Olympian Zeus. We came back and slept like logs before getting up for a full day today.

Today we went to the Acropolis and the Parthenon before heading to a folklore museum. After the museum we had free time, but it was pouring down rain, so we ended up just going to different cafes.

Tomorrow we have to get up super-early for a three hour bus ride to Delphi, which I'm really excited about. Then Monday we start our cruise.

We've already had some kids start trying to drink... ugh. The thing is, they don't just want *A* beer, they want to get drunk. The cruise might be interesting...

I've bought an amulet for protection from the evil eye, maybe it will stop these kids from drinking the haterade.

Ok, off to do room check and then to bed.

    Grecian Formula
Hey guys. So, I'm headed off to Greece over spring break, and I know several of you all have spent a fair amount of time there-- [info]nihilistic_kid, [info]jtothecaptialc, I'm looking at you. I'm posting my itinerary, and I'd love any suggestions and/or info you could provide. While we will be on a tour, there is always free time, so if there's something I should try to see or do, I'll give it a go. As a note, I will be traveling with 39 teenagers, so getting drunk on ouzo isn't really an option. I'd also love to hear any advice about Greece in general-- things to avoid, haggling-- yes/no, easy phoenetic phrases....you get the idea.

Thanks for any info/help you can provide!

    LJ Icon?
At some point within the last month, somebody had a lj icon with an animated faux phone conversation between Madonna and Britney Spears. Does anyone know where that came from? I'm trying to find a link, but I'm failing.

    Thanks!

    The Big Question
I got this from a blog that I read, but I think it's a neat question:

What music should play when you walk into a room?

I'm curious to hear if [info]jtothecaptialc's song is still the same as when he was in college.

As for me, I've wanted to walk into a room to this song since the first time I heard it.

Play games and feed the hungry
So, thanks to [info]coothleen, I found this site:

    http://www.freerice.com

It's a multiple-choice vocab game and for every question you get correct, the site donates 10 grains of rice to the United Nations hunger fund. Also, for every three words you get correct, you get to go up a vocabulary level. I've maxed out around 46, but I'm determined to go higher. It's way addictive and a fun (and helpful) way to waste time.

I think I'm going to play this game with my students sometimes. We're working on Greek and Latin roots all year, and I've found I've really had to reach back to my knowledge of morphems to get some of them right.

I looked it up on snopes.com and it is legit. Consider it a Thanksgiving gift from Cooth and myself.

Anyone need a date for a formal Xmas or New Years event?

I need an excuse to purchase this dress:

Sigh, maybe my mom was right. I should have gone to my prom, then I wouldn't have formal dress lust constantly.

Always on the cutting edge of superhero dance moves
So, I sometimes feel that it is my duty to keep what few readers I have abreast of the current trends within our youth culture. Today our lecture is on the "Soulja Boy Dance" aka "Crank Dat."

Apparently the song began innocently enough, just a typical hip-hop song with a fairly catchy hook. Then, the video. The artist (the aforementioned Soulja Boy) creates a dance to go along with the song that is both simple and complex at the same time.

Soulja Boy put out an instructional "tellem" to inform us on how to do his dance.
(Those who don't wish to learn the dance should skip ahead to the 3:10 minute mark to view the dance.)

During our most recent "long lunch" (45 minutes is long in high school!) with dj on the breezeway, I witnessed many students coming together to perform this dance. An "Electric Slide" for the '00s, if you will.

Now, historians disagree as to whether the dance or the take-offs began first, but I believe it was the dance that began the phenomenom. Other "artists" decided to rip off the lyric of "superman that ho" and change it into different comic book characters and pop culture figures.

A personal favorite, "Crank Dat Spiderman."

"Crank Dat Spiderman" begat "Crank Dat Batman" which had such other bastard children like "Crank Dat Mega Man" and "Crank Dat RoboCop." Most of these are, imho, far inferior to the Spiderman dance, except for one notable exception: "Crank Dat Aquaman."

Of course, after these hits come the parodies. "Crank Dat Grandpa" is laughable for a few seconds, "Crank Dat Urkel Dance" is just dreary. However, out of this drek comes a shining beacon of light, "Crank Dat Harry Potter." Even if you watch none of the other videos, I beg you to watch this one.

I think that [info]rani23 should use her down time at Quantico to invent the "Crank Dat Wonder Woman." Meanwhile, I'll be working on the next link in the crank dat chain: "Crank Dat Little Women."

    Buffy Trivia
Ok, so I did just about one of the geekiest things imaginable this weekend: I created a trivia test on okcupid based on ONE episode of Buffy. Danny Freer would be proud of me.

The trivia test is based on the musical episode of Buffy, "Once More with Feeling," and [info]i_monarch and [info]coothleen will both tell you that it's a wee bit challenging. So, add to my geekery, take my test and improve my stats.

I think the only way I could be geekier is if I'd written an entire test about one episode of Star Trek.

    Enjoy!

Now this might make a magic show bearable...
So, we're reading Oedipus in my 9th grade classes. We've read about half of it and I get to Jocasta's speech where she talks about men dreaming of sleeping with their mothers. This is actually the speech that Freud used for the basis of the Oedipus Complex, so I decide to go ahead and introduce Freud to them. They're only 14, so I can't go into much depth, but they need to have a general understanding.

I ask them if anyone has heard of Sigmund Freud.

A few raise their hands, but one boy waves his frantically in the air and says he knows.

"He's the one with the tigers, right?" says the boy.

It takes me a second, then I sadly shake my head.

"No, sweetie. You're thinking of Sigfried and Roy."

Moments like these are why I have stayed in the field of education.

    Obsessed much?
Ok, I'm completely obsessed with the Johari/Nohari windows. All day yesterday I kept refreshing the window I had open to see if anyone else replied.

Since I'm still obsessed, I'm re-posting links to mine so that more people can respond. Come on, even if you don't really know me, I'm curious of your impressions!

Not sure about the cool part...

    Modern, Cool Nerd

    73 % Nerd, 56% Geek, 47% Dork

    For The Record:

A Nerd is someone who is passionate about learning/being smart/academia.

A Geek is someone who is passionate about some particular area or subject, often an obscure or difficult one.

A Dork is someone who has difficulty with common social expectations/interactions.

You scored better than half in Nerd and Geek, earning you the title of: Modern, Cool Nerd.

Nerds didn't use to be cool, but in the 90's that all changed. It used to be that, if you were a computer expert, you had to wear plaid or a pocket protector or suspenders or something that announced to the world that you couldn't quite fit in. Not anymore. Now, the intelligent and geeky have eked out for themselves a modicum of respect at the very least, and "geek is chic." The Modern, Cool Nerd is intelligent, knowledgable and always the person to call in a crisis (needing computer advice/an arcane bit of trivia knowledge). They are the one you want as your lifeline in Who Wants to Be a Millionaire (or the one up there, winning the million bucks)!

    Congratulations!

    Adventures in the Big City
So, Saturday I drive up to [info]mme_moonpie's for a visit at her new apartment. As usual, my car (which behvaed perfectly the day before when it was in the shop) started to act up when I'd gotten to the point where it was too far to turn around. The first half of 66 was a bit dicey and involved me using hazard lights, but eventually I got up to cruising speed and arrived while only getting lost in the wilds of Aspen Hill/Wheaton twice.

Laura gave me a tour of the apartment and we had a nice chat, then we packed totebags and were off to catch the metro to get into Dupont Circle where Rashmi lives. Remember the metro, it will feature prominently in the story that is to come.

We get on the metro at Glenmont station, which is the farthest out you can be on one end of the red line. It was lovely to get out in Dupont Circle and walk a few blocks to Rashmi's. When we arrived, we changed into swim suits and headed upstairs to their rooftop pool. Oh. My. As [info]mme_moonpie said, it's just swanky. A heated rooftop pool that's open until December. We sat by the side of the pool in the shade drinking mango juice, seltzer water, and a whole bunch of rum while eavesdropping the conversations around us. Then we got into the pool, which was warm, but not so warm as to be icky bathwater. We stayed in the water for at least an hour, then got out and sat in the shade for a bit longer.

After the pool, it was time to get ready to go out. Laura and Rashmi had both managed to get more than a little buzzed (I didn't drink fast enough and my cup became contaminated with pool water from splashes). It took us quite a while to get organized to get out of there. As I was in unfamiliar surroundings, I wasn't going to try to herd the kittens.

Eventually, we were on the metro down to Cleveland Park to go to Ireland's Four Fields. [info]coothleen met us there and we also met up with Laura's friends Catherine and Marlena. We had an excellent time eating and drinking on the patio. I had a black adder, which I haven't had for years. The band that was playing inside the pub sounded good, but (and I'm clearly getting old here) were just too loud to want to go inside for. I wish they could have left the doors open, though. [info]coothleen left first, as she had to get ready for her training client the next day since SHE ROCKED THE PERSONAL TRAINER EXAM AND IS NOW FULLY CERTIFIED! Go Cooth! Marlena and Catherine left around 11:30, but Laura, Rashmi, and I were not done getting our party on. So, it was off to Nanny O'Briens, which was just down the street.

I was a little leery of that pub at first, since it had two old-ish guys on guitar and synthesizer (!) playing fairly loudly. However, the finished up their set quickly and we found some barstools on which to perch. After a few shots of bourbon, I was digging the atmosphere a bit more and having fun listening to the other people around me and snarking with Laura and Rashmi about the various people walking around. There was a fair amount of mutton dressed as lamb, but also a pretty random collection of people. The band came back on and started playing some stuff that was fun. The "No, Nay, Never" song, "Brown Eyed Girl" and "Piano Man" are always good bets. I'm envious of Laura's ability to just strike up conversations with people. She talked for a while with a very nice guy from Ireland who worked construction and was trying to give away a ticket to Ozfest that he had won. I contributed a few things, but mostly just sat there, observing. Rashmi went home around 1am, but Laura and I stayed on until about 2:30. Then it was time to go home and here is where it gets really interesting.

We missed the train going out to Glenmont by seconds, and the next train wasn't coming for another 20 minutes. However, the going the opposite way was coming along shortly, so Laura said that we could take that one out to Rockville, then hop a bus to take us across the way back to her apartment. Sounded logical to me, so on the train we went.

Let me say, there is a wonderful anthropological study to be made of the 1-3am trains on weekends around D.C. It was very clear when we got on that EVERYONE on that train was going home after a night of debauchery. There were the dejected looking singles (mostly men), the groups of friends, and the couples/hook-up couples leaning tiredly on each others' shoulders. The highlight of the trip was listening to a guy standing up in front of his friends and speak animatedly of, "Lake Tahoe, man! It's the coolest lake in Arizona, it's right next to Hoover Dam." *snort* And they say that our educational system is failing. Piffle!

Eventually, we get off at Rockville and head out to find a bus. Laura had researched this beforehand, and said we needed to catch the Ysomething or Ysomethingelse bus. Unfortunately, those busses didn't actually stop at Rockville, they stopped at Glenmont, the station that we were supposed to go to. Ok, fine. Looking at a bus map we determined that we could take the 26 bus to Aspen Hill. We go out to find the bus stop and discover that the bus stopped running at 2:30 and doesn't start running again until 6:30. It was 3:30 am now.

Fine. We see a Doubletree hotel and decide that we can walk there and get them to call us a cab. Ironically, it was the same hotel where we had hosted [info]coothleen's bachelorette party/bridal shower. The girl at the front desk (Jasmine from Lebenon, thank you, whereever you are!) was super nice and said she would call us a cab. The company she finally reached said it would be 30 minutes, so we were welcome to wait in the lobby. 30 minutes later, no cab. Jasmine called the cab company again, ok, another 30 minutes. She tries calling other cab companies, no dice. Another 30 minutes, no cab.

Suffice it to say that we spent 2 and a half hours in the Doubletree hotel lobby. Laura was sitting on a couch and I had a chair. I initially told stories to keep us going, but eventually Laura was starting to fade. I tried to keep myself awake, then tried to sleep, but the chair was not made for sleeping. Around 5am, I moved over and lay down to use her hip as a pillow. We catnapped until about 6am, then walked back over to the metro station. Unfortunately, the stop for the 26 bus that we needed was on the other side of the station. Laura was convinced that the metro would open up, since they opened early to let people get to work. A bus (not our bus) pulled up and was waiting a bit before embarking. I ran over and asked the bus driver when the metro would open. 7 or 7:30, he said, it's Sunday. *sigh* I explained that we needed the 26 bus, but the stop was on the other side of the station and we couldn't reach it. He handily pointed out a smaller stop for 26 just across the street from us, with its back to the Doubletree. I thanked him and got Laura over so we could walk to the station. It was 6:15 now.

Finally, around 6:45, the bus came. We stumbled on and wearily rode the rest of the way back to Laura's apartment, where we fell into bed a little after 7a.m.

I slept till around 1:15pm, then got up and had brunch with Laura. We talked and hung out and I showered and I finally got ready to leave around 5:15. I then drove Laura back to her car at the metro station, then went on to meet up with [info]i_monarch.

Due to various complications, I ended up not getting to our appointed place until 6pm. Fortunately, Doug was patient and we had a nice conversation while I was there. We stayed and talked till about 9pm, then it was time for me to hit the road back to Charlottesville. I made it back here (after a stop for refueling/wake-up at the IHOP in Warrenton) around 12:30 and crashed pretty hard.

Thus was my weekend. I guess I can check off "sleeping in a hotel lobby like a prostitute" from my to-do list now.

Now it's Monday and I only have a week left before going back to school. As The Manolo says, Aiiiiiiiyyyyyyyyyyyyy! Where did my summer go? I can't believe it's time to start back up. More whining on that subject later.
