Lost Music Saloon: 5:00 - 7:00 p.m. (Eastern): European Music The Lost Music Saloon has dedicated past programs to music from Canada and Australia that fits the alt-country/roots/bluegrass/modern folk/twang styles favored here in the Saloon. Today we’ll take a long listen to music from European artists and bands, concentrating (mostly) on continental Europe. Some of this music sounds like it could have come straight out of American clubs or studios, but many of tonight’s songs bear unmistakable Eurasian accents, and a couple will even feature non-English lyrics. I’ll borrow liberally from the recent, and excellent, ’10 Years of European World of Bluegrass: America & Europe Join Hands’ a 2-CD compilation of 48 bands from 15 countries. See you in the Saloon! Lost Music Saloon: 5-7 p.m. (Eastern): 4th Anniversary Show Today’s edition of the Lost Music Saloon celebrates its own 4th birthday. It was on June 18, 2004 that the Lost Music Saloon first aired here on WRIR. Back then it was a Friday evening show, but it moved to Mondays in December, 2004 when WRIR created its “Roots Music Monday” line-up of programs. In 2004 we were webcasting (no broadcasting over the airwaves back then) from a room about the size of a large closet in the basement of this building. When it rained, the floor puddled with water. The bathroom failed to work more often than not. There were times you could count the entire listening audience on one hand. It's amazing how far WRIR has progressed since then. We couldn't have done it without you, the listeners. As has become a Lost Music Saloon tradition, I re-create the playlist for my very first show on each anniversary. I trust that you won’t mind re-visiting these old friends once again. See you in the Saloon! Today's Lost Music Saloon surveys the past few years as a prequel of sorts to next week's 4th Birthday Edition of this program. That's right, I've been bringing this radio show to Richmond's airwaves and webstreams since June of 2004! I always re-create my very first show on each anniversary, so between this week's show and next week's, you'll get a good overview of the kinds of music that make your barkeep here in the Saloon happy.

Lost Music Saloon: 5-7:00 p.m. (Eastern): Goodbye No Depression Music Magazine! This week’s Lost Music Saloon waves a musical good-bye to that bible of alternative country music (whatever that was), the ‘No Depression’ music magazine. Full Disclosure: I was an occasional contributing writer to the No Dep mag a few years back, and it is the one and only mag (of any kind, music or otherwise) that I’ve ever bothered to collect every single issue - - 75 in all. No Dep’s last issue (May-June, with Buddy Miller on the cover) is on newsstands now...after that, it’s finished as a bi-monthly magazine. You can still find online at www.nodepression.net, and there are plans to publish a twice-yearly No Depression book. So please join me as I look back, affectionately, over No Dep’s journalistic journey on today’s show. I’ll play cuts from bands that made the cover of the first 10 issues; a couple of songs each from No Dep’s Artists of the Decade for the 90’s and the 00’s; some music by bands or from albums I reviewed for the magazine; and even a couple of real rarities: songs by and from Peter Blackstock, one of the mag’s founders, publishers, and managing editors. Lost Music Saloon: PLAYLIST: April 14, 2008 5-7 p.m. (Eastern) I haven't done a "new music edition" of the Lost Music Saloon for two months, so today's the day. Most of the songs you'll hear on tonight's show come from albums released in 2008. But I'll play a short set of songs that take note of the fact that today, April 14, is also known as "Ruination Day" because of three tragedies that all fell on this date in history: (1) the assassination of Abraham Lincoln in 1865; (2) the sinking of the Titanic in 1912; and (3) "Black Sunday" in 1935, the worst day of Dust Bowl storms to afflict the nation, when "black blizzards" afflicted the country with clouds of dust so thick visibility was reduced to 5 feet in many places. Lost Music Saloon: 04/07/08 5-7 p.m. I've been doing a lot of themed shows lately, so today's Lost Music Saloon is just an ordinary one - - good songs done by artists and bands that deserve more exposure than they usually get - - drawn from the vast reservoir of "American Mongrel Music"...that mix of country, rock, roots, pop, folk, blues, bluegrass and more. Lost Music Saloon: 5-7:00 p.m. (Eastern): Baseball! Today's Lost Music Saloon pays homage to baseball. I watched the Washington Nationals defeat the Atlanta Braves in their brand spankin' new Nationals Stadium last night on a bottom-of-the-ninth walk-off home run, and that inspired me. I'll play a wide variety of songs from a wide variety of artists, but with a special emphasis on John McCutcheon's brand new release titled 'Sermon On the Mound'. See you in the Saloon! LOST MUSIC SALOON: Mondays 5-7pm (Eastern): Easter Edition Today's Lost Music Saloon is an Easter edition. Not gospel, and not “Christian Rock”, but songs that come at the idea of God, Man, and religion from varying angles. Lyle Lovett goes to “Church” and Paul Thorn takes us to the “Mission Temple Fireworks Stand”, but Iris DeMent just wants to "Let the Mystery Be". Bill Morrissey sends us a "Letter From Heaven" while Robbie Fulks declares that "God Isn't Real". Van Morrison finds God in nature ("In the Garden") while Jeff Buckley finds God in the power of music and the glory of women ("Hallelujah"). Kate Campbell offers up her re-imagining of the Last Supper ("Last Song"), while other songs take the perspective of Judas ("Too Much Heaven On Their Minds") and the priests who made the decision to put Jesus to death ("This Jesus Must Die"). We'll hear about Jesus as a peaceful hippie ("Jesus Was a Capricorn") and as a not-so-peaceful hitchhiker (“Gimme a Ride to Heaven, Boy”). From soup kitchens to traveling salvation shows to speaking in tongues, you'll hear it all in the Saloon today. Songs to be selected from: Buddy Miller: With God On Our Side/New West Terry Allen: Gimme a Ride To Heaven Boy/Sugar Hill Van Morrison: In the Garden/Polydor Paul Thorn: Mission Temple Fireworks Stand/Perpetual Obscurity Kate Campbell: The Last Song/Eminent Lone Justice: Soap, Soup & Salvation/Geffen Greg Brown: Speaking In Tongues/Red House Pogues: If I Should Fall From Grace With God/Stiff Jeff Buckley: Hallelujah/Columbia Lyle Lovett: Church/Curb Iris DeMent: Let the Mystery Be/WB Bill Morrissey: Sandy/Philo Johnny Cash: Sunday Morning Coming Down/Columbia Legacy Ian Moore: Muddy Jesus/Capricorn Flaming Lips: Plastic Jesus/WB Ray Wylie Hubbard: This Morning I Am Born Again/Philo Randy Newman: God’s Song (That’s Why I Love Mankind)/Reprise Terry Allen: Salivation/Sugar Hill Emmylou Harris: Orphan Girl/Elektra Bob Dylan: Every Grain of Sand/Columbia Bill Morrissey: Letter From Heaven/Philo Andrew Lloyd Webber/Tim Rice: Heaven On Their Minds/MCA Robbie Fulks: God Isn’t Real/Geffen Maria McKee: You Gotta Sin To Get Saved/Geffen Amazing Rhythm Aces: Amazing Grace (Used To Be Her Favorite Song)/CCMusic Andrew Lloyd Webber/Tim Rice: This Jesus Must Die/MCA Wilco w/Billy Bragg: Christ For President/Elektra Tom Russell w/Little Jack Horton: Swap Meet Jesus/Hightone Mover: Jesus Was a Capricorn/Jackpine Social Club Iris DeMent: He Reached Down/Flariella Robbie Fulks: What The Lord Hath Wrought(Any Fool Can Tear Down)/Bloodshot Rodney Crowell: Beautiful Despair/Columbia Neil Diamond: Brother Love's Traveling Salvation Show/MCA Garry Morse WRIR Richmond Indie Radio PO Box 4787 Richmond, VA 23220 Listen and support WRIR: http://www.wrir.orgLost Music Saloon Playlists: http://www.livejournal.com/users/lostmusicsaloon/ | | Monday, March 17th, 2008 | | 8:04 am |

Today's Lost Music Saloon takes a long look at songs featuring spoken word verses, choruses, or both. Songs that span the spectrum from talking blues, to conversational singing, to spoken word pieces recited against a musical backdrop. Songs from chart-topping performers and from obscure artists. A little different maybe, but it's all good stuff.
See you in the Saloon!
