| | The surgery went well. I was able to spend the night in Tania's room in a reclining hospital chair with some pillows, a sheet and a blanket kindly lent me by one of the nice nurses at Union Memorial Hospital in Baltimore, MD. I didn't get more than a few hours of sleep, but Tania certainly felt better having me there to take care of her instead of the nurses, who were nice, but not quite family. We watched the sun rise from the 8th floor window of our room, something that Tania has wanted to do together ever since we were married since she's rarely able to get out of bed before dawn (and I don't do it when I don't have to). We were released this morning around 9AM, home around 10:30AM, and I was out locating a local pharmacy that both accepted MediCare and had her pain medication in stock since she needed it by 11:00AM. The pain seems to be hitting her harder today due to the nerve block wearing off completely, and she's taking a nap in our room right now as I try to placate our cats. The feline population is in a revolt due to lack of attention the past few days. | comments: 2 comments or Leave a comment |

|
| Tania and I got here around 6:00AM and have gone through the customary meetings with the check-in staff, the anesthesiologist (two actually), the nurse assigned to us, and the surgeon. Tania just went in for surgery a few minutes ago, and I wandered off to find the only wireless access open to the public, here in the little library internet access room. They have a room reserved for her to stay the night, depending on her pain levels later after the nerve block and light anesthesia have worn off. So we may be home tonight, or she may not be released until sometime tomorrow and I'll be spending the night in Catonsville or Baltimore with Adam or Martin. Surgery is expected to last about 2 hours, then the surgeon will speak to me about the results and I'll be able to see her after about another hour.
I'll post more if I have time to get back here later, or if I end up staying with Adam or Martin and leeching their access. | comments: 1 comment or Leave a comment |

| After countless hoaxes over the past few empty years of my life (Blizzard-ly speaking, of course), Diablo 3 has finally been announced. And here I thought I'd lost Blizzard to that cheap whore, Warcraft for good. Of course, being that it's been slashdotted (and that it's Diablo 3 announced, for crying out loud), you probably won't be able to load this link very well for awhile. Even so, here it is:

Actually, if you want some info on the game and a far better chance of it loading, try this:

| My sister is no longer possessed with the baby within. It has been expelled and she is a much nicer, albeit drugged person now.
Since the subject of this post means nothing to almost all of you, I'll explain: my sister was being particularly nasty and sarcastic at a recent family dinner, so I commented that it didn't seem as though she were pregnant with a baby, but with a vortex of bitterness. Saying that would probably make me a bad person if everyone present didn't find it quite so funny and seem to breathe a collective sigh of relief that someone had chastised her for her behavior. | comments: 1 comment or Leave a comment |

| I've managed to stay sick with the same cold & cough for the past month or so. I know most people would see a doctor, but with me I just get sick from exhaustion and stress and I've had plenty of both lately. Unfortunately Tania finally caught the cold from me earlier this week, so though I'm almost over it now, she's just about halfway through it. At least we have this three day weekend to do very little but rest and relax and try to recover.
Incidentally, if you've ever wondered what cats do on Memorial Day weekend, go to http://www.sugarthecat.com to find out . | comments: 1 comment or Leave a comment |

| For those of you who don't read Tania's journal, I'm re-posting her update about putting our eldest cat, Sugar, to sleep today.
***
It's done. And it was absolutely the right thing to do. When she peed (she peed after the first shot, actually), her urine stank. Absolutely stank. Her urine hasn't smelled at all for months and months, because it's basically been just water. For her urine to smell that bad meant that the toxins had infiltrated her whole system.
She had a great last day. We spent hours cuddling, with her purring and even letting me scratch her belly several times. She was still herself when we took her to the vet, yelling at us and the vet and letting us know she was Not Happy. She died with her personality still intact. She died Sugar and not just a shell. And I held her and told her how much I loved her and asked her to forgive me, because her mind had not given up even though her body had.
I am doing okay for now, though I suspect I will be up and down for a while. Strange as this sounds, I think I did a lot of my grieving actually with Sugar, holding her and telling her how much I love her and miss her and wish there was anything else we could do to make her feel better. But there wasn't.
She's buried now in Rob's parents' yard, right next to their beloved dachsund Gretle. She'll never be constipated again and never have to have things done to her that she hates by people she loves.

| Just finished watching the last episode of Battlestar Galactica Season 3 on dvd (which we received earlier this week, just as it was released). All I can say is... wow. I mean Tania and I truly saw some of the season finale's revelations coming, but still... wow. I'm just glad we saw the cliffhangers coming.
Now to wait for the final season to come out on dvd... uh... after it stops airing :/. At least Sci-Fi has announced a pre-quel series already! :) | comments: Leave a comment |

| | I'm not normally a Family Guy fan, but their season six opening episode called 'Blue Harvest' does a great parody of the whole 'Star Wars: A New Hope' movie. It's funny how the animations often look better than the original film did... and the characters now, of course, point out how silly their action often are. Although Obi-Wan is obnoxiously gay and occasionally the puns fall flat, overall it's very good. I hope you've seen the movie 'Airplane' before you watch this, though... and 'The Breakfast Club', and various 'Robot Chicken' episodes... | comments: Leave a comment |

| Since others have posted about age getting them down recently, I thought I should post the thoughts I've had as each year of my twenties has slipped by me.
20. Holy crap. I've been around for two decades. I survived both the eighties and the nineties (having been born in 1980, making it easy to keep track of my age... yes, I forget). I DONT HAVE MUCH MONEY SAVED OR LIFE GOALS ACCOMPLISHED!!! It's a good thing I'm so young!
21. Wow! I can get legally drunk! No wait... my neurotic self-control tendencies won't ALLOW me to get drunk, LEGALLY OR OTHERWISE! GAH! I'M STILL YOUNG!
22. I'm... not 21? Man... when did that happen? Where did all those good times I was supposed to have at 21 go? I mean... wasn't I supposed to have a 'Spring Fling' or something? Am I really 22? Is 21 over? I want my money back.
23. I'm... wait... what's my age again? Did I just reference a Blink182 song? Well at least I have my life better together than THEY did in that STUPID song! Hold on... HOW MUCH MONEY did they rake in from that 'stupid song'? Right... I was supposed to be saving and investing so I'd be rich soon, wasn't I? Good thing I'm still 21! Wait a minute... 23? Really?
24. Good God. I'm two-dozen. That's two boxes of donuts... and a LOT of years. Hey... I haven't had donuts in a long time... maybe I should...GAH! I HAVE A BELLY!!! SINCE WHEN DO I NEED TO EXERCISE!?!?? #@$@#*@#&!!! Well at least I'm not yet...
25. TWENTY-FIVE!? I'M TWENTY-FIVE!? That's a whole damned QUARTER-CENTURY!!! I'm a QUARTER-CENTARIAN!? Well at least that sounds better than twenty-five... I mean, my life is one-quarter over! What? Yes, of course I'm planning to live to 100! That way I'll be able to retire and live for years off of all of the MONEY I HAVEN'T STARTED SAVING YET! GAH!!
26. Can I please go back to 21? What have I been doing with my life? I've been alive for as many years as there are letters in the damned alphabet! THAT'S A LOT OF YEARS! Maybe I'll count 'zed' as well as 'z' and pretend I'm canadian... then I'd have 1 more year until I'm as old as the alphabet is long, when I'll be...
27. You've GOT to be KIDDING ME. I'M ALMOST THIRTY!!! OH THE INHUMANITY! Thirty is the age of OLD PEOPLE! People I know have had KIDS by now that are almost older than me! Well... that's not biologically possible, unless you accept the possibility of time travel... Ok ok, calm down, I'm only 27. TWENTY-SEVEN!?!?? That's only 9 x 3. Hey... it's also 3x3x3! That's pretty cool! Isn't that an exponent or something? Can't remember... haven't had to do math since I learned it in... 3rd grade? Hmmm... that was...NINETEEN YEARS AGO!? You've got to be kidding me... soon I'll be getting married! Wait... I AM MARRIED!? WHEN DID THAT HAPPEN!? Well at least I've started sav... oh crap. I HAVEN'T STARTED AMASSING WEALTH!? WHAT KIND OF AMERICAN AM I? What? Everyone is poor and lives off of credit so it doesn't matter? Well that's good...
28. How old am I again? Let's see... 2008 minus 1980 is... damn. What ever happened to the math skills I learned in 3rd grade? I'LL BE 28 THIS YEAR!? WHY!? WHY DO TEENAGE GIRLS GET CUTER EVERY YEAR I GET OLDER?! DIRTY OLD MAN!!! Noooooo!!!
All of the above thoughts have indeed been given form in my mind at one point or another over the years. Don't back away... I'm not weirder, just more honest than you! | comments: 4 comments or Leave a comment |

| | My $15 helicopter is indeed awesome. The cats don't quite know what to think of it. It's definitely not very maneuverable, and it's a challenge just keeping it steadily hovering in the air. It's definitely worth it for what I paid for it, and someday I'm sure I'll justify buying a more expensive one. | comments: Leave a comment |

| For the record, I can recommend not one, but three ill-fated, single-season, cut-down-in-their-prime sci-fi shows now available on dvd.
Threshold - Aliens among us! They crave protein, have rapid metabolisms, and want to convert us all. Be on the lookout for 'em, along with a secret government project whose first stage is entitled 'Theshold' and attempts to keep the aliens in check with the aid of Brent Spiner, a midget, and other less-noteworthy people.
Surface - CGI monsters are coming up from the deepest portions of the oceans and eating people! The main adult cast members are a new actress called Lake Bell and a guy that looks like Nathan Fillion's uglier brother (if he has an uglier brother). Who is Lake Bell, you ask? I still don't really know, but the series came up with many compelling reasons to make her strip down to her bare assets and go swimming. Hurray for water and bare assets! Ohyeah, and the government or some such secret bunch of people with undeveloped plot lines are trying to do something secret... or something.
Invasion - What is WITH the simplistic names? I guess they wanted to sound like Lost, and this series did air at the same time and was probably cancelled because of that (they lost to... Lost?). This was by far the best short-lived sci-fi series we've seen and featured... Aliens among us! Except the aliens are people clones... that pop up after a hurricane... and act strangely. I'm not sure if there's any truth to this, but I'm staying far away from Florida due to the extreme creep factor of this show. The main character's brother in law looks like an even less attractive Jack Black... if that's possible. They really did a great job of having various alien-cloned people have widely-differing views on what has happened to them and how it changes their drives and motivations. Your view of the 'bad guys' will shift many, MANY times during the single first season. | comments: Leave a comment |

| So Tania and I watched another film made by the same guy that did A History of Violence and again starring Viggo Mortensen. It was a good and very poignant, poetic-justice sort of story, but it was very brutally violent. Now we watch a lot of violent films because I like them when they're over the top in the Kill Bill 1 & 2 or Shoot-Em-Up sort of way (excellent movies all three, btw).
However, this movie was just a bit much. I mean, do we really *need* to see a dead man's fingertips cut off once the character says he's going to do it? For those of you who don't know this charming tradition, it's a way of preventing a body from being identified by its fingerprints. Do we really need to see not one, but two throats cut in a single movie?
I suppose it could be argued that the director was trying to show the brutal cruelty of the reality in which the characters lived. Yet, I don't think I missed much of the brutal cruelty of the characters in movies just a few years back, when the camera cut away at the last second and didn't actually *show* what you *knew* was happening. Seriously, the sound effects of a throat being cut or fingers snipped off are enough, trust me. I don't think 'R' for 'Restricted' really tells the whole story anymore... | comments: 2 comments or Leave a comment |

| | I need ideas for a new website project. One of my domains is about to expire and I'm thinking of trying something new. Anyone have any ideas or want to go in on a joint project? The eventual goal of all of my projects is to generate a small stream of income, usually via google ads, but I'm open to new ideas. | comments: 1 comment or Leave a comment |
