Holy crap I'm updating my LJ.
Women's World Cup today with co-worker Lindsay. Two games at RFK stadium, France vs. Brazil, and Germany vs. Argentina. It took a little while to warm up to the game and get out of my detached referee's perspective... made a little more difficult that I left home wearing yellow and green (i.e. Brazil colors). Oh, and I *hate* Brazil; every win of theirs seems like some sort of injustice to me. In any event, almost cried when they scored in the 58th minute from an offside position (yes I had a a good angle on it). I have not been especially impressed by the quality of the officiating at this tournament. In any event, literally two seconds from the end of the match, France scores, and the place goes absolutely nuts. Tie game, Brazil still advances to the quarters, and France goes home, but what a match.
Second game was not so interesting, Germany won 6-1 in work(wo)manlike fashion.
In other news, I've started Italian classes, work is keeping me incredibly busy, and I'm submitting a paper for publication (from summer work) this Tuesday. No let-up anytime soon, but that's the way I likes it. I think our department is more incredible the more I think about it, and that only bodes well for the future. More as it develops.

Merry Christmas to all my Gentile friends. I'm heading off to Tampa tomorrow for a wonderful bunch of days in the sun. Except that the high temps range from 57 to 70 and the lows from 45-60. Still, perfect soccer weather. And so starts my (pleasantly) hectic break...

My throat is sore and my trekkie sensibilities wounded. The review session (4 hrs) went well, though. Bought a bunch (>70) candy canes to entice the kids to answer questions I and my compatriot threw at them. And then we threw the candy canes at them. Was good.
On the way to see Nemesis, ran into a spot of trouble with my lock icing over. Crap. 15 minute detour to the gas station fixed that, though I'm not sure that Nemesis was worth my $9.00.
Outstanding quotation from the book I'm currently reading; the section is on jukebox/bar etiquette:
"Nine Inch Nailing
After an especially horrible experience of poor service, repeated short pours, or unsavory clientele, it's clearly time to leave the bar. Even if you harbor enough resentment to piss in the corner pocket, stop and instead use your underdeveloped superego to produce a gift for everyone. Pure fury is much sweeter when spread out over the course of $5. This is the time for stuffing the jukebox with "Let's Get Physical." Put that dusty Irish Drinking Songs disk on repeat (after three or four plays, "The Rover" ceases to be pleasant). Perhaps you might go for the darker side-- play the last four songs on Nine Inch Nails's Downward Spiral, repeatedly. If you are a victim of Nine Inch Nailing, simply yank the plug and start over"
Hehehe.

Good news of the day: (and of the week, likely!)
"Congratulations, David. The Keasbey Selection Committee at Brown is forwarding your name as one of the three applicants from Brown who will be reviewed by the Keasbey Trustees. We will be sending off your materials this week. After that, you will hear directly from the Keasbey Trustees who will let you know if you are being invited for an interview in early January. Please let me know if you have any further questions, and, again, congratulations. Best, Margaret Klawunn"
Just that much closer to going to Oxford....

Almost there. Took my physiology exam this morning on 3-ish hours of sleep, and did fairly well, if I do say so myself. And I did pass my hapkido exam last night (woo hoo!). Still sore from that. My partner did awesome; skipped a rank-- the examiners said that my kicks were "too pretty and not vicious enough." There's an odd sort of a critique, but it is a martial art. So that's that.
After a three hour nap taken early this afternoon, I feel almost human again. My Confucian ethics prof delivered a lecture this afternoon on Confucianism and human rights; it was a pretty directed critique of capitalism; one to which I am becoming increasingly sympathetic. The (ironic?) situation was that Ehud Barak spoke at Brown tonight, and so the main green was supposedly crawling with security and there was the requisite group of anti-Israeli-political protesters, who, for one reason or another, started beating drums. That's a new one for me. I offhandedly told the professor that we had considered piping his talk into the lecture hall Barak was to speak in. That got an amused grimace.
At the reception following the talk, a retired professor of religious studies introduced himself to me. This was cool for two reasons: 1) He and I pass each other on the street quite often, so it's nice to now actually formally meet him. 2) There's just something cool about having a professor introduce himself to you. We chatted briefly about my work, and then he went to stand in line for the aforementioned Barak lecture.
Yesterday another immunology TA and I ended up agreeing to run a 4 hr review session for the final. Man, we're too good to those kids. I plan to guilt trip each and every one of them into scoring well on the exam. I'm such a good TA :)
I'm also considering posting some of my unfinished paper on LJ for critique... but I haven't decided yet. Oh, and I forgot to mention the bottle of Hawaiian Macadamia Nut Honey wine I won at the referee clinic. Mmmmmmmm...

Just returned from my referee's clinic... very very tiring, but great to see all the guys I hung out with (read "reffed and drank with") in Hawaii and at West Point in 2001. Came out with some more credentials and a big comfy yellow fleece. Thanks to Jan for confirming that I can indeed wear yellow without looking too stupid.
We've (the emperor and I) decided that if all of our friends got together, we could open up a high school and cover pretty much any subject among us. We're lacking in the history department, so if you fancy yourself qualified to teach with us, do let us know. Tomorrow will be study study study; and hopefully I'll get in enough time to be moderately prepared for both my hapkido exam and my upcoming physio exam. The future looks hazy. Off to bed.

Just got back from two intense hours of sledding. I'm sore. And tomorrow I take off for my refereeing clinic in Porter, Indiana. Hoping to have an awesome time... but this week's prospects look pretty grim as I have my hapkido test Monday and a physio final Tuesday for which I am not prepared at all.

Really very picturesque, walking through Providence streets as the snow begins to fall. I'm hoping against hope that it won't all turn into disgusting slush by tomorrow. It's about time I gave the toboggans in the back of my car a workout. Here's to wistful wishful thinking.
Started looking at how my break is shaping up. Busy busy busy...but if all goes well it'll be in a good way. Currently most in doubt is the potential trip to Philly on 1/9 if I earn an interview for the Keasbey Fellowship. More hoping? You betcha. And I'm stuck at Brown U. until the 20th cuz I have to grade immuno exams. Gak.
Until then, it's simplify simplify simplify; and above all else, be productive!
