SUGAR AND SPICE
We weren't prepared for Karin.

I joke sometimes that if we'd had her first, she would have been an only child. Anders always gets upset when I say that, though. We had it so easy with Martin when he was a baby, that we thought we had the baby thing aced. Karin pulled the rug out from under our parenting feet. She hit the ground running and her motto is still full speed ahead.

I wrote this about her when she was 2 years old:

Karin makes me so upset because she screams bloody murder when she doesn't get her way, because she doesn't listen, because she's stubborn as a mule, because she says no no no constantly, because she doesn't sleep through the night, because she always does the opposite of what she's asked or told, because she doesn't obey instantly (haha!), because she's so violent, and because she screams "mamamamammamamama" all the time! I'm sure I can think of more.

Karin also makes my heart melt because she has the sweetest smile, because she talks with the cutest lisp, because she is fearless and brave, because she gives good hugs, because she lights up and comes running when she sees me, because she loves to draw and read and sing, because she is so smart and responds so fast, because she makes the most hilarious faces, because she looks like an angel when she IS sleeping, because she always wants to sit in MY lap! I'm sure I can think of more.

My mom thinks she was put on this earth to teach me patience. If so, she's fighting a losing battle by inches. I'll be dragged to patience kicking and screaming. The thing is that no matter how mad we get at her, she invariably makes us laugh. She's just such a CARD! Her volume control is always on high and her little body practically radiates energy. Wish I could bottle me some o' that. :)

She and my sister's daughter were apparently switched at birth, because my sister is the tomboy in MY family, and Karin takes after her with a vengeance. She likes speedy shoes, and dressing up as a policeman, and playing crash with cars, and zooming around on her little kick-scooter. She's the leader of the gang of little boys in the neighborhood and gives as good as she gets. At the beginning of last summer, she tried banging the training wheels off her bicycle with a hammer because she wanted to be able to GO FAST, mama!

She's always covered in bandages, currently she's sporting one across her cheek where she was scratched by a bush. She has no fear, this kid. It's a little scary to behold, as a parent. But I can be happy that we've succeeded without knowing how in creating a fearless, independent, stubborn individual who stands up for herself and knows her own mind.

She'll rule the world one day, just you wait.

*smile* it's so wonderful to read u write about your childen.
i love how supportive of them u are. they look so much alike! now all we need are pics of u and anders!

haha! They DO look so much alike, and they're so close in age, that they're nearly the same height as well :) It's weird because it's much more obvious in pictures than in real life. We've always thought that Martin looked more like me, and Karin more like Anders, but it's getting harder to see those types of differences. And as requested:

Liz Anders

Awwww, you're whole darn family is cute! :)

oh stop! I only post the flattering pics :)

Don't we all? And we all know that we look _much_ better in RL. :)

yay! nice to see u :)

hahaha! :) haven't you seen me before? I posted a pic on that thread on Amerikanska awhile back :)

nah. i don't read much of amer. these days.

smart girl :) I still look at it a couple of times a week or so, but it's so annoying most of the time, I wonder why. Although I have to say that Meowza's Xmas letter writing campaign thread cracked me up totally today.

i haven't even looked. lol.
i am too caught up in my lj, where i actually feel part of a community. :)

She's adorable :)

Thanks :)

Agh - reading this makes me all mushy...! *lol and wipes a little tear from corner of eye*

She's so cute, and she really looks like a "busunge"!!

ha! you hit the nail on the head :) busunge! :) If you look that word up in the dictionary, Karin's picture is there as an illustration, hahaa! :)

ex_misschili604

Why, yes, there it is! :)

Okay, not really.

But I did have to look it up, since that's a new one on me. 'Little blighter' was how my dictionary translated it. :)

"Little blighter?!" ROFL!! :) okay, I wouldn't have translated it so. That seems a little, um, harsh. :) Brat is a little harsh, too. My dictionary translates it as: rowdy young person. I would have said "rascal" or "mischevious kid." :)

She's such a cutie. Your description of her antics made her sound so funny.. although it also made me feel a little less fertile than when you talked about Martin. Ha. :)

haha! tell me about it :) although I certainly wouldn't trade her in, most of the time. It's fun to have two such wildly different kids.

She's adorable! I love reading your kid anecdotes--I'm not sure if it makes me more eager to get the baby days started or more willing to wait a couple years! :) If it's any consulation--my mother has said that I nearly drove them crazy sometimes when I was little, so very obstinate and determined to do my own thing all the time, but she also says she knew she didn't have to worry so much about me folding to peer pressure as a teenager.

That's what keeps me from killing her some days :P haha! I was the same way, although I was also a lot like Martin, lost in my own little world. Weird how you're reflected in your children. Makes you reassess your relationship to your parents, that's for sure.

thank you, that was really nice :) I keep wondering how I'm going to deal with her when she's a teenager, since it's so tough already some days and she's only FOUR!! LOL :) I've been told I can't think that way, but it's not so easy to stop. :)

Var glad för henne!
Världen behöver fler starka kvinnor.

May I add you to my friends list?

of course! :)

both of your children are beautiful =)

thank you :) that was a kind thing to say :)

thats great :) she sounds so full of life and energy!

yep! never a dull moment around Karin :)

I cried when I read this as my second child was exactly the same! My daughter was first born and she was an easy baby. I was smugly proud of her behaviour and development and mistakenly thought that somehow it was because of ME! What a bloody laugh!

Obviously the powers that be thought I needed to be taught a lesson in humility. They sent me a live wire son. He was into EVERYTHING. The sort of kid that the class teacher calls "a character" (teacher talk for little shit) He was so much hard work, but at the same time, so rewarding. Gosh I miss him!

She's gorgeous and you should be proud.

LOL! :) I didn't mean to make anyone cry :) We thought it was US, too, when we had Martin and he was so easy and slept through the night after 1 month, and played happily by himself. Karin just completely through us for a loop. We've actually been to counseling twice with her before she was TWO to learn how to handle our own reactions to her :) A character, for sure. I am very proud of her, even when she drives me nuts. Where is your son? In Australia?

Yes, he's in Australia. I've been thinking about him a lot lately and I your post just reminded me of him as a smaller boy. As I said, these sorts of kids are very demanding on your patience and sense of humour, but then there are such moments of pure joy that it's all worthwhile.

I hope you get to see your kids fairly often. I know my mom's having a really hard time with my brother moving to Europe this summer, as well as me and the kids being so far away. My sister isn't exactly next door to her either :( so she's got it tough.

I haven't seen them for nearly three years. But then that's a whoole other story that I won't go into. It must be hard for your mum, too. I know what it feels like to be thousands of miles away from children. :(

THREE YEARS! :( ow, my heart goes out to you.

hahaha! I meant "THREW" not "through" ! LOL

I really enjoyed reading about Karin and Martin! I especially liked the part about the training wheels...ha ha!

She is so adorable, and so is your son :) She sounds a bit like me when I was young and I turned out ... okay ... kind of :)

That is such a wonderful post!! Brought tears to my eyes :) I'd love to be able to read something like that about me when I was little. She will love reading that one day. And she sounds wonderful, and capable of ruling the world indeed... :)

Tell your mom to get busy! :)
