Man, slow times. I'm the last person who posted here.

Anyway, just wanted to let you guys know what's up...unless this was mentioned before and I missed it. I dunno how many of you are Barack Obama supporters, but I sure am, and I was surfing the internet...I guess you might call it internet window shopping...and I found this There Will Be Barack t-shirt. I'm fond of it, so I thought I'd share, but, I dunno...if I'm gonna fork over way too much of my hard-earned cash for an overpriced Obama t-shirt, I'm gonna make sure that the proceeds go to his campaign.

Nevertheless. It's a shirt worth sharing.

Why I do LOLcats [12 Oct 2008|12:56am]
prevenger
[ mood | nostalgic ]

I like cats. Well, that's a bit narrow - I like animals in general. I've had plenty of pets growing up of all varieties - dogs, cats, gerbils, hamsters, birds, fish, and so on. And I can care for even more - thanks to working at a pet store, I know about care for rats, rabbits, pigs, monkeys, snakes, lizards, frogs, turtles, and a couple of other things.

But above all else, I have a special fondness for cats. Part of it is a bit of jealousy - I wish I could be that limber, that self-sufficient, even that fastidious. Part of it is their size - cats are just about the right size to have in your lap, by your side, held, or any number of ways to spend time with them, without being too small to deal with easily.

But most of all... for all that cats have a reputation for being aloof and treating people only as food providers, cats and I have always shared times together. When I was going through some of the most awkward days of adolescence, cats were besides me giving me their own brand of unconditional love. When I needed a hug, I had cats that would let me hold their soft warmth and things would get just a bit better.

And sometimes, the tender moments would come when I least expect it, from cats that I had issues with. I remember once, when I still lived in Florida, I briefly went on the back porch when our cat Crystal came up. She was a fire-point longhair, and was not a sociable cat at all - she had gotten used to us, but she'd generally only tolerate a person's presence for a minute or two. And she was approaching me - mind-boggling behavior from her. She looked up at me, and gave a broken meow - not one of anger, but pleading. So I sat down in a lawn chair, and went to pick her up. She offered no resistance, which was downright bizarre. There were times she missed vet appointments because we couldn't coax her into a carrier or felt like losing a half a pint of blood through scratches on the arm.

When I looked at her, I found out what was bothering her - she had gotten so infested with fleas that her tail was literally blackened with eggs and scabs. (By the way, this is when I decided that I wasn't going to keep an outdoor cat again.) So I did the only thing I could think of - I started to work the eggs out of her fur, and remove any fleas I could. It was heartbreaking, actually. As I quickly found out, the flea infestation was so damaging that she lost all sensation in her tail - I even ripped fut out of her tail because of some stubborn areas, and she didn't care. She just sat there while I did my best to get rid of her problem.

And at the end, when I got as much as I could and I pet her to make sure she was calm? She purred. As nasty as she had been her whole life to, well, pretty much any human, she rubbed against me and purred. And from then on out, I took care of her as best I could, and she finally let us all take care of her. It took probably about 8 years, but she finally became our cat.

It's not the best story in the world (I'm not proud at how laissez-faire we were with her health because of how vicious she could be), but it's one of the ones I remember most clearly because it was a moment of perfect trust between me and a cat, and we came out better for it. And there are hundreds more - my cat Gizmo letting me flatten her on her back because she knew I'd just softly rub her neck like she liked, or saving Ginger from being abandoned at a rest stop in Pennsylvania and having her be a faithful and friendly companion (though one that hated being held) for over a dozen years after that. When I had nothing else, I had cats there to make me feel better.

(As a tangent, I can't stand the Rainbow Bridge. Not for its schmaltz, actually. It's because my cats - hell, all my pets - deserve better. They shouldn't be standing around, waiting for me before getting into Heaven. They were loving, loyal, and the source of some of my happiest childhood memories. I don't talk about my religion much, but I do believe this - no loving God would let animals that good wait for my death to send them to their own reward. Let Gizmo, Frosty, Hans, and all the rest enjoy a few decades of Heaven without me. I know them - they'll remember me when I see them again.)

It pains me to live without cats now. But my lease forbids having pets. And to be honest, right now, I couldn't properly focus on caring for a pet. So for the meantime, I just make LOLcats... it's the proper substitute right now. Even though seeing all those cats breaks my heart constantly - because they can't be mine.

Hi, wow, the elljays are super duper slow today. And it's National Coming Out Day! I was going to picspam, but instead I think I'll write some ficlets in between housework. All in honor of the holiday; all take place today.

This one was supposed to be either Johnny/Ben or Tanith/Brooke, but it decided to be Johnny and Tanith friendship fic. So this is sort of for [info]callmesandy and sort of for [info]jule1122, both of whom made sort of correct song guesses when I last offered ficlets.

Richard Hatch interview; con appearance in Orlando

For over thirty years 63-year-old Richard Hatch has been a part of the global "Galactica" phenomenon. Portraying the heroic Apollo and the power-hungry former terrorist Tom Zarek, he elates fans both of the old and the new show.

On Sunday, October 5th, the lovely actor paid a visit to a collectors' fair in Bochum (Germany). Caprica City's editors took the opportunity and had a talk with the actor.

Read about Hatch's current work, about his welcome at the "Battlestar" set and what he thinks about Tom Zarek's present situation.

Also, Richard Hatch was added to the guest list for MegaCon, a multi-genre convention held Feb 27-Mar 1, 2009, in Orlando (FL), featuring no less than seven TOS/RDM actors. (At the moment, it would probably make more sense to list the BSG-themed cons Hatch DOES NOT attend. *g*)
