An Evening With Amanda Palmer, Michael Pope, and 'A Day In Dig Nation' at 10:00
http://www.brattlefilm.org/brattlef ilm/movie_detail/080726.html
Tickets $12. No discounts, no passes.
The WHO KILLED AMANDA PALMER video-series is premiering at the Brattle in conjunction with a performance of Edinburgh festival hit A DAY IN DIG NATION!
Amanda Palmer will be screening a sneak-peek of a short film featuring 6 videos to songs from her forthcoming album "Who Killed Amanda Palmer." The film was directed by Michael Pope and written by Pope & Amanda. (running time: approximately 35 minutes)
A DAY IN DIG NATION is a mash-up of media, sound and live performance following Rex, a man so consumed by technology that he forgets how to communicate with actual people. Helmed by multi-talented performer/composer/designer Michael McQuilken and co-written by Tommy Smith, A DAY IN DIG NATION weaves a hypnotic tale of crisis and redemption in this exhausting technological age. Think A Christmas Carol meets The Wooster Group; It's a Wonderful Life on an acid trip. (Running time: approximately 1 hour)
All the artists will be available for hanging out, hugs, questions, and signing after the screening.

Joss Whedon interview: http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/co ntent/discussion/2008/07/18/DI2008071801 208.html
Langley Air Force Base, Va.: I've been reading some criticism (insert audible gasp here!) of "Dr. Horrible" about the lack of a strong, empowered female lead. They claim that Penny is merely a prop for Dr Horrible and Captain Hammer to fight over.
[snip]
Joss Whedon: But, yeah, Penny is not the feminist icon of our age. And yes, she does exist in the narrative as part of Doc's fate -- but everyone in the story is there to move the story. Is she less real than Hammer? (Is ANYTHING?) We gave her a cause so she wouldn't JUST be the Pretty Girl but the fact is, neither Doc nor Hammer gives her the attention she deserves -- Doc's crush comes before he has the slightest idea what she cares about. Which is not uncommon. It reminds me of "Sweeney Todd," the Judge and Sweeney singing "Pretty Women" -- a beautiful duet with no insight whatsoever. Just images.
But we shoulda gave her more jokes.
and later
Joss Whedon: Boy, you kill someone, everyone makes a fuss! Yet I still feel differently about this than what I've done before. It's a tragedy, classically structured. Usually death is meaningless and arbitrary in my work, to reflect life, but this is the old brew. And yes, I have issues. This will come up again, I'm sure.

When I staggered in at 3 AM last night, my friends list has exploded with Dr. Horrible reactions. I am still not sure how I feel about it. You should watch it, if you haven't. 45 minutes total. It's free through tomorrow, then only available if you pay $4 at itunes or buy a DVD. HOW NOVEL.

(Also, comic book! http://www.myspace.com/darkhorsepresent s?issuenum=12&storynum=2 )
First off, separate from the content, I totally support this experiment. Joss explains himself here: http://drhorrible.com/plan.html He paid for this out of pocket. Any money they get from DVDs and itunes will go to pay the crew. This is an experiment in alternate modes of distribution, and I WANT ALTERNATE MODES OF DISTRIBUTION. My television is not hooked up to any kind of TV, it serves to play DVDs and let me hook my laptop up. I am sick to death of old methods of distribution, and old methods of who gets the money, and I want to see some change, people! When you pay for Dr. Horrible, you're not paying NBC! You're paying, like, the gaffer! People who actually need this money to live so they can make tthe entertainment you enjoy.
Buy Doctor Horrible! Even if this particular piece of media is flawed, if this succeeds, then we probably get more experiments like this! This could be one of the early steps to MEDIA REVOLUTION. Who doesn't want that???
Secondly, i do love me some musicals! I really really really love musicals! And, I have nothing more profound to say than that!
Thirdly, Act III. Act III caused a lot more lj-cut for spoilers posts than the other acts. I just watched it an hour ago, and I dunno what I think! You should watch and make up your own opinion. I will discuss more in the cut at the bottom, but I think the summary is that people's responses seems to be heavily informed by how much of a Whedon-head they are, and how much of a feminist comic book fan they are.
Fourthly, the format. I think putting it up in three parts each 48 hours apart was very interesting, especially given how many people loved Act I and Act II and were less than happy with Act III. If those people had watched it all in one go, they would probably just come out of it saying "Ugh, I hated [thing in act III], I hate it all." But some of them got all excited about the first two acts, and bought a season pass on itunes (I did that after act ii), and talked to their friends about it, and then got upset. It's different.
Also, it seems to make for better buzz making, as people watch act i and post about it, then their friends watch act ii and now everyone posts about it, and by the time act iii comes around everyone is watching it. :-)
In conclusion, I had some issues with Act III, I don't know how I feel about Act III, but overall I did like it. I like flawed things all the time. It was nice to get some Joss humor and Joss dialogue and Joss music even if it also brought along other things about Joss that people don't like. Doesn't meant people shouldn't complain and critique, I'm just saying I liked it. This is clearly an origin story, and I hope that means we will get to see more, in some form. Also,
agiel, I want to see your gender reversed production as Wiscon!! Do it!
And now, some spoilers, a bit of my own opinion, rambling musings onw hat I had read from others.
( Spoilers, Ahoy! )I can't sum up all the opinions I've read. What did You think?

Guys, if there is one thing I have learned from having pneumonia, it is that "Deadwood" is fricking awesome. I love this show. I am heartbroken that there are only three seasons. I want all media I consume to be this good.
I am going to try and get the .4 miles from peter's house to random tomorrow to play some d&d, and then get back. This will be very difficult. Peter can help me get there, but getting back will be tricky. I can't walk that far unassisted, perhaps not at all. I will be really sad if I stay in alone all night because I can't find a way to get from Random to Boddy in the late evening. If you would like to help me out, please let me know. I am sick of begging for help, but that's what it is.
Assuming I don't run screaming to California, I guess i will take strobe lab, 3.091 (intro to solid state chemistry) and 21h.504 (east asia 1500-2000) next term, and urop at NML for credit. Assuming everything works out.
Fever's been gone since Thursday, halfway through my antibiotics, cough is much less worse, despite a upswing in coughing today. Energy levels and ability to walk unassisted still critically low.
Seriously, "Deadwood" is awesome. Also, "All About Eve" (1950) which I saw tonight. The snark! The backstabbing bitches! Glorious, though it left me with an intense fear of becoming Margo. Also, the Brattle? Awesome, I want to go way more often, signed up for the mailing list and google calendar.

home from firefly. very happy to have gone, had an amazing time, feel rather ill on the way back, was kinda feverish and delirious earlier. unfortunate. hopefully i can make it into work tomorrow. seems unlikely right now because i can't seem to sit up straight. i can't find the horizon.
i took ~670 photos at firefly, but some of them were very very experimental. they'll mostly be on flickr.
i brought a million people and they seemd to have fun, and my secret goal of having it be a learning and growth and fun experience saw some measure of success.
i remain insanely behind on doctor who. i am mostly skimming through the outsode LJ cut response, and focusing on what the emotions chosen were. i am not a questioning who fan, i gladly accept what is given to me. we will see what i think.
