I'm trying to compile a photography portfolio. Any comments anyone has on the set I've chosen so far, photos you think shouldn't/should be included, would be very much appreciated.

Am I the last person to hear about this? [Sep. 29th, 2008|12:55 pm]
Oh em gee?

I can think of only two authors I wouldn't mind being allowed within a hundred feet of the Hitchhiker's trilogy. Fortunately Eoin Colfer is one of them :D

...actually, the only reason I'm a little upset is because it means there won't be another Artemis book for 2 years ¬_¬

I went into town today for some holiday reading and came back with the PostSecret book. Whoops. But I did also get The Secret Life of the Natural History Museum, because I've been wanting to read it forever, and First Among Sequels, which I bought purely because it has an amusing title and because Terry Pratchett called it 'ingenious'.

I did get a gorgeously illustrated and photographed DK guide to Provence though. I'm actually really looking forward to this holiday (this statement will be retracted when the usual pre-holiday terror kicks in on Wednesday evening). I only hope I can persuade the parents to drive to all the places I'd like to visit (the place we're staying is lovely but in the middle of bloody nowhere). For instance, I will not be satisfied until I've been to see this, and there's tons of other pretty Roman stuff around the area. And I'd really like to go to Marineland and see some killer whales :D Is it sad that to find places I'd like to go I type 'activities for children' into Google? XD

Holy crap I just nearly broke my nose. I was standing, leaning over my (big, old, very heavy) desk chair to pull the lever underneath it to bring it up because i had it tilted right backwards. And of course as soon as I touched the lever it sprang forward, right towards my face. However I either have very fast reactions and pulled back, or was extremely lucky, because it stopped about a cm away and I only got a slight knock on the tip of my nose from the rebound. Won't do that again!

Anyway, here's a few shots from me and Gemma's adventure today to a lovely Kentish village called Chilham.

And one more thing, my animation showreel. What I have to show for an entire year's work. I won't actually need it for the production jobs I'm going to apply for, so it's more for my satisfaction than anything.

Lol. We, as a species, will always be hugely resistant to change, won't we? :) Personally I've been using the new layout since it was revealed. I love the uncluttered-ness of it and ability to comment on status changes, etc. Every time a major site changes its layout there's an uproar - I remember being aghast at the new BBC News one. But everyone gets used to it in the end, they don't have a choice, and eventually you'll be wondering what you were making such a fuss about. Besides, if sites didn't update their format every so often, people would complain that they looked old and outmoded!

I can see the argument for allowing both designs, but from a technical standpoint, I can also see how this would be very difficult to maintain.

So, no, this will not be the end of Facebook, people will not leave in protest, and it will all be forgotten in a couple of months. Mainly I'm amused that it warranted a BBC article!

...essay writing makes me very verbose in everything, I apologise :P

This is awesome in some unexplainable way and clever in so many ways that I don't quite get how it works.

Kinda makes me miss France too. Just as well I'm going to Provence in a week :D

I am of the firm opinion that the PMOG concept should be extended over the entire internet, so you can turn any commenting moron into a rival, and any educated, witty person that delivers unto them the smackdown they deserve, an ally.

...and mine people's livejournals.

Canterbury Cathedral Cloisters HDR

HDR is awesome :D

I've got some more sort of stereotypical crazy-exposed-looking ones, but I liked this the best so it gets pride of place for the time being :)

So this is that 'drawing for pleasure' thing I've heard so much about. I'd forgotten how it went. Something to do with not having the time or inclination, I believe.

Pity I still remember my old crappy style.

And lack of skillz in foreshortening.

And anatomy.

And basic shading.

Right.

Now I remember why I don't draw ¬_¬

Apologies if this is too big. I just have to share the loveliness of Scarborough :)

No paddling for trainers

I'm still going through and uploading Madeira photos ^^; I discovered CS3's panorama maker recently, it's hugely better than Canon's Photostitch O_o

Hopefuly those storms we're forecast will hold off until the evening, I'm hoping to go into Canterbury and try to get some HDR shots to play with.

Hard Nut Life [Aug. 30th, 2008|01:42 pm]
Well, it's finally finished.

Untitled from Claire Hogg on Vimeo.

There it is then, the result of 3 months hard work! I'm not entirely sure what to do with myself now O_o

I could point out a million things wrong with it, but... I won't ;)

(I'm uploading a copy to YouTube too, will link that here shortly.)

I woke up to a scene of carnage in the triops tank this morning. Okay, that's an exaggeration, but it sounds nice and dramatic. Lunch had completely disappeared, one triop was in its death throes, upside-down on the gravel, and the other was swimming around looking suspiciously healthy. They'd both been getting a bit livelier with each moult, presumably whatever poisoned them was slowly going, but I didn't think either of them was healthy enough to catch and kill Lunch yet >< I'm feeling a lot more guilty about letting him be eaten than I thought I would be XD Anyway, I'd post a picture of the single, victorious Triop, but he's moulting and thrashing around a bit too much to capture. It doesn't look like a very fun process, shedding your entire exoskeleton in one go O_o

In other news, I am going to have to kill something. (Quite possibly the bloody mosquito that's got into my room.) But that's a rant for another entry ¬_¬

Triops report [Jul. 30th, 2008|12:29 pm]
I thought I'd post some photos of the triops while I still can, as they appear to be dying :/

Triops at 7 days

Triops, day 10ish

Triops, day 10ish

I'm not at all sure what happened, they were fine one day and the next they were all slow and swimmy-upside-down-y. I'm assuming something's happened or got into the water that shouldn't have. It's not too cloudy or green, so it's not that. I've removed all the crud from the bottom of the tank so it's not their own waste that's poisoning them. I did a partial water change with water I gave a good shake in the bottle to oxygenate it and that didn't seem to help, but if they're already poisoned, it's probably too late anyway :/ I had the window open the night they went funny so the water may have got cold, but that hasn't harmed them before. Perhaps the lower temperature caused something to bloom that wouldn't have otherwise?

So it's just a case of watching them die slowly at the moment >< I'll change the water again in case that'll help, but like I said, it's probably too late. Not sure if I'll get some more once they're gone, the whole experience has been rather stressful -_- They definitely need more careful treatment than seamonkies, that's for sure. And if I'm going to be completely honest, they are quite a lot more creepy-looking XD

Fairy shrimp, Triops tank

This, however, is the little fairy shrimp that hatched with them and, ironically, is thriving. I named him Lunch, but it looks like he'll outlive his potential predators after all XD Maybe I should just buy a load of eggs and fill the tank with fairy shrimp XD

Triops tank, day 4

Well, day 4 and I seem to be down to 2 triops and something I initially thought was a sea monkey, but as they're salt water creatures, must be a fairy shrimp. I'm tempted to find another tank for it, because as soon as the triops outgrow it, it'll become lunch ><

2 is a good number though - even if they only grow to an inch long each that bowl will be pretty cramped! They really do double in size every day, it's quite scary :D (still too small to take photos of though!)

In the corner of the picture you can see my two cute new keychains from Strapya. One's a tiny weeny cactus, the other's a marimo ball - a fluffy seaweed from Japan that naturally grows ball-shaped :D

You can also see the edges of my windowsill jungle, as its become known to the housemates. There's 20 pots there, on the last count, and that doesn't include the ones that have several plants in and my little keychain plant collection ^^; I'll take a photo when the light's not behind them! Yeah, I'm obsessed. My problem is that I just need something to look after, and seeing as I can't have 'proper' pets here, plants have to take their place ^^;

Guitar Hero DS has done terrible, terrible things to my wrists. Still, I finished Medium mode in a day. That was worth the serious muscle damage, right?

Morning already?

I have oh-so-many more foxy ones to upload :D He was being very photogenic. Pity I only had my little camera with me and had to rely on the digital zoom >< Next time I'm home, the long lens is coming with me.

Eeee, my triops have finally started to hatch :D Now I've just got to work out how I'm going to sleep with the lamp-for-heat on. Thanks to the little tank thermometer, I've discovered that my room drops to below 20C at night, temperatures that will probably kill the babies ><
