Job Wanted Anyone know any work I might get? I need to do a two-month language practice for my MA studies, but that's not the only reason I want a job in Britain. London, or recently Cardiff (I wonder why... ;) ), preferred. The problem is just that I don't really know what I'd want to do. "Something to do with languages" but I don't know anything more specific. That's why I just look for different things on gumtree.co.uk.
Anything you can do about it? ;)
Oh help.
(I'd really need a headdesk icon here.)

I Can't Believe the Time! I really can't believe the time! Last time I checked it, it was 0.14 am. Now it's 1.34 am. Just before that it was 10.30 pm. It's taking surprisingly long here on the net. And what have I been doing? Been on LJ, mostly reading those 40 entries on the GW comm that I hadn't read in months, and reading my mail, and Facebook. And that's it. And it's taken hours. Hours! And there hasn't even been that much to do. But I suppose my computer's just full of everything and therefore so very damn slow. And thus taking extrrremely* long to download any page.
*extrrremely, as said by David Tennant on the Comic Relief sketch to Catherine Tate, or Lauren Cooper. 'You, little madam, are nothing to Shakespeare. You're pointless, repetitive, and extrrremely dull.' Or something alone those lines.

Hiya Would it be time to post another entry here... Haven't done that in ages, again. I just haven't felt like coming here although of course there are all of you, my lovely friends. :)
Oh bollocks, have to go to work soon...
Lately, my life's been QI and Alan Davies. :D I've been watching him anywhere I could. :D Right now I'm trying to order his Urban Trauma dvd and the QI Book of General Ignorance from play.com but for some reason it doesn't seem to work... (Saara, did you see my message on your Facebook?)
Oh but now I have to go. Hope all of you are fine and all?

Signing up for Courses Oh lord. I just made my timetable. Or what I can do, really, it's not much up to me. Also signed up for courses but that's even less up to me whether I can get them or not. And I had no idea our MA group should meet tomorrow. Or today, actually. I haven't prepared for that in any way except for thinking of my thesis, possible ideas for it. And we were supposed to read someone's work on a relatively same idea as ours and brief it to others... well, no can do.
And I'm just so tired now but thought I'd say this bit here to get my brain out of it all, so to speak. And now I'll have to go to shower and then to sleeeeeeeep.....
ETA Why oh why can't we sign up for the English courses electronically?! Everywhere else you can. Well not Swedish or German but I don't take them. It's just so handy!

Question Okay, so where's 'New balls please' from? It's used everywhere, not least on QI and even Green Wing. I tried to google it but didn't find anything to explain it...

Sexual Translating I've been watching quite a lot of British TV lately - okay, I admit, QI and Coupling :) - but the problem there is just that all the bloody time I wonder (sub)consciously how different parts would be translated! And especially with QI it's very difficult! There is so much sexual language there that relies on words as such that it would never match in Finnish.
'Who or what is coming tonight?'
And it's actually spelled cummingtonite (apparently), and it's a mineral. Now you would never be able to translate that! Because 1) you say words the way you spell them in Finnish and 2) to have an orgasm is not 'coming' in Finnish, but rather 'getting', or 'going off'. (Except in some apparent translations people might 'come' in Finnish as well; it might also be because people hear English so much here (all programmes are subtitled, not dubbed) and start thinking in that way, me being one of those.) Or with the word 'cock':
'Why did the inventor of the decimal point encourage his servants to stroke his cock?' 'Is it because if you got servants, you would, really?'
Cock here meaning a cockerel, or a rooster, not a penis. But there is no equivalent word for that in Finnish. In Babes in the Wood Caralyn had a cock in a box, and that was translated as having a Jorma in the box. Jorma is a male Finnish name that sometimes refers to the male genitalia; in Police Academy the English version was a Johnson which I find is pretty much an exact translation. But obv you cannot use Jorma in all contexts using 'cock'. Besides, if you both listen and read the subtitles and hear 'cock' and see 'Jorma', you'll know right away that it's a pun; there's no other possibility.
Now the problem is that I think of these things constantly, really. I translate them in my head and think of possible versions (which is good practice for my future as a possible translator) but it's not really worth the bother since I'm most certainly never going to translate QI for the Finnish television and it just takes up so much of my time. Not that I'd be doing much of anything else in the mean time but even still...
Kirsten, I wonder if they're ever going to show QI in Singapore...;)

Hello again, my dearies Long time no see, again. :)
First I was away, then just didn't feel like writing here... I have had a few thoughts that I thought would've been great to write here but then I wasn't bothered after all. :)
The trip was great. On the second day - or first proper day - we went to Zürich where I obv had do send cards to my friends. ;) On the whole it was very wet, rainy and cloudy. Our hostess said she's live d41 years there, in Langenegg in Austria, and that it had never rained so much. But then again, that's what the weather was all around Europe. Or all around the world actually...
Swiss men look like Guy. :D
Now the holidays are almost over (as much as I've actually had any holiday, working all summer) and it's time to start on my Master's Thesis. Subject? Green Wing of course! :D I know, I did my Bachelor's Thesis on it as well but what can you say? It's a fantastic subject. :) Especially now that they show the first season along with the second one here. I get the translations and can start working on them.
Ooh, speaking of translations, I feel very special, having influenced the Finnish television. It is because of me that the translations now read Macartney and Schulenburg, instead of McCartney and Schulenberg! I sent an email to the translator via YLE (the Finnish BBC) and she said she'd try to correct them. Yey! Every episode so far at least have had corrections in them. *feels special*

Comic Relief - Catherine Tate and David Tennant Oh, I quite forgot to put this video here. Thank you Kirsten for pointing it out to me! :) http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZlTgdu9CpeI&eurl=
But what is the word she says there? 'Bite me, alien ___!' Kirsten said bwoi. Reetta said boy. If it's bwoi, what does it mean? And yet, it doesn't sound very much like boy to me...

Heard of that from James Henry's blog where someone posted the address. At the end of the text it says the Swedish Metro had published her story; it was short and said basically the same she said herself, only that they had tried to contact the dvd firm in question, with no results.
