The Rules: Post info about ONE Supreme Court decision, modern or historic to your lj. (Any decision, as long as it's not Roe v. Wade.) For those who see this on your f-list, take the meme to your OWN lj to spread the fun.
My choice? Loving verses the State of Virginia. The Court overturned miscegenation laws in Virginia that prevented inter racial marriage. Somewhat important to someone who caught the Yellow Fever pretty bad in college and ended marrying a charter member of the Black Pandas.

01. Think of the first word that comes to mind when you think of me. 02. Go to Google Images and search for that word. 03. Reply to this post with one of the pictures on the first page of results (don't tell me the word). 04. Put this in your own journal so that I can do the same

|
Bought a new phone this week. This one is supposed to be nearly indestructable. I'm sure I can test that.
Anyways, you can all stop acting so offended that I never answer my phone. I've now got a battery that lasts for longer than five minutes. I did a loooooooong phone conference with a parent and didn't have to stop and plug in once! And it's supposed to be WATERPROOF!
We'll see if it's chocolate proof though.

4:16 pm - Frequently Asked Questions Regarding My Article on Cracked
|
1. What about your morals clause? You know, that thing you use as a polite excuse to not go to certain parties at Dragon*Con?
Good question! My morals clause is very specific towards things that put my employer in a bad light or break the law. There is nothing in my article about the school I work for, or even that I teach. Also, it's not illegal to swear on the internet. I've checked.
2. Eowyn was in the book first! Have you even read LotR?
Good question! Sadly, I have not read those books. I have a low tolerance for elven poetry. As for the related charge that Eowyn shouldn't have been included in a Hollywood-centric article, I will point out that my original article pitch wasn't exclusive to movies. It just turned out that way after several rewrites and edits.
3. How much did you get paid?
Good question! Cracked pays $50 per accepted submission. If you are in the top ten articles by page views the month it runs, that doubles.
4. Have you even SEEN Firefly? Why do you hate Joss Whedon so?
Good question! Yes, I have seen Firefly. I adore it actually. But not so much that I can't view it with a critical eye. Though I will point out that I originally included a deeper exploration of River's role as a Damsel In Distress in the Firefly 'verse along with examples of DIDs that have been able to transcend that and become Warrior Women. And while River becomes magically sane in the last few minutes of Serenity, it's fairly ambigous and I don't consider her as a Warrior Woman.
Though I do think Joss is a smarmy, pompous douchebag of a man. I still like his shows.
5. Why did you write this? Is this supposed to be a joke?
Good question! I've been wanting to try my hand at writing for Cracked since the merger, however I didn't have any worthwhile ideas. However, I've always hated Keira Knightly and will rant freely and unprovokedly about her terrible character in the PotC movies. After a conversation regarding her and feminism with a friend, I started thinking of how to put together a solid argument on why she was terrible for women. It's very, very, VERY important to me that people understand how she ruins things for other women. Since Cracked articles are really freshman lit crit papers with swears, it seemed like a good pitch. Evidently, someone else agreed with me.
As for it being a joke...Yes. It's supposed to be funny. It's quite alright if you don't find it hilarious. I never laugh when I read my own writing. If you do the same, that's fine. I have fifty ways to console myself.
7. Jennifer Liang? Since when does Cracked have hot Asian women writing for them?
Good question! Cracked has had hot Asian women writing for them since Christina Hsu (Mortal Wombat on the forums) sold her first article last fall.
8. You're a man hating feminist, aren't you?
Good question! No, I'm not a man hater. I'm married (to a man). I have friends who are both men and women. I freely admit that the brand of feminism advocated in my article makes it seem like I never shave my legs and I spell "women" with a "y". So if this is your only exposure to me, I understand why you might think that. The article just played better when I wrote from that perspective. Also? It's fucking Cracked, the same site that ran a "I want to see Sarah Palin Naked" article a few days after mine. Clearly, nuanced discussions of gender in the media are not our strong point.
Any other questions?

My Cracked article finally ran this weekend.
http://www.cracked.com/article_16587_hollywoods-5-saddest-attempts-at-feminism.html
The comments section is hilarious. My favorite so far? "I thought the writer was absolutely insane reading this article. When it said she was the founder dedicated to the Wheel of Time series, my suspicions where confirmed." I'm not exactly sure what he's saying, but I want to send him a fruit basket.
They did cut it for length, and rewrote some sections for clarity and to punch up the jokes. However, most of what seems to be quoted is all mine baby. Overall, I'm very pleased.
If you like my article, please pass it around. I get bonuses based on traffic.

10:40 pm - I am exhausted...
|
-Pre-con Stress and no Jimmy around at night make me not sleep well.
-Tornado evacuation today in first period. One of my kids in that class is terrified of weather and has the emotional maturity of a potted plant, so he clung to me the whole time. Sobbing. And I think he lost one of my stress balls. Oh well, thanks to Mary, I have a lifetime supply of them.
- School wide open house tonight. Parents seem to adore me. Yay. Didn't get home till 8pm.
-Dwyn visiting. She is lovely and soothing to be around.
- Spent most of today with some part of me being cold and wet due to torrential rain.
- Had to tutor one of my drama llamas in homeroom after school. Didn't actually need tutoring, was just refusing to do homework at home. Gah.
-Another drama llama threw her glasses at the wall in my room this afternoon. School counselor was called to diffuse situation. Vaguely annoyed at co worker who inadvertently caused meltdown. School counselor seems to think I am awesomeness personified lately.
-I think I need an actual stuffed llama to keep in my room as the home room "mascot". I will never explain what it means.

I am going to bed.

10:02 am - "I can haz Allspark now? Noooo!!! They be takin my Allspark!"
|
There are several things, I've never understood about Micheal Bay's Transformers. Most of these are, of course, plot related. The most notable of these being the decision to take the MacGuffin/ killer robot bait into a heavily populated downtown area. And I do want to point out that, as a taxpayer, I'm pretty disappointed by the amount of damage to the infrastructure caused by the robots punching each other. They were just at the Hoover Dam, in the middle of the fucking desert. Couldn't they do their showdown out there? Or is there a desert owl breeding zone they were afraid to disturb? The sequel better involve a congressional hearing of some sort.
But the thing that baffles me the most, is the way the robots talk. They exposit early in the movie that they learned English from "the internet". I call bullshit. There's no way. If they learned our language from the internet, then they would speak a bizarre pidgin of LOLspeak, leet and engrish.
And I find it incredibly creepy that in the epilogue, Shia is sexing his girlfriend on top of Bumblebee while a bunch of intelligent cars watch.

9:33 pm - First week almost done...
|
And like I told my boss today, it feels like I just came and picked up right where I left off last year. I'm teaching two sections of sixth grade World History, one of seventh grade US History and one of eighth grade Georgia History. I'm also teaching two afternoon electives, Applied Problem Solving and International Studies. I haven't had this many preps in a long time. But with the exception of Georgia, they are all classes I've taught before. And the afternoon electives are supposed to be "fun" classes. I still grade them, of course, but the classes I compete for students with are Hiking, Sports and Games, Yoga and Meditation, Arts & Crafts, Film Studies, Swimming, etc. In Applied Problem Solving, we're doing a paper airplane competition. In International Studies, we've been watching highlight reels from the 1996 Olympics and doing jigsaw puzzle maps.
I was nervous about having all the sixth graders for social studies this year. Last year's were suck a clusterfuck in terms of ability. But with the increase in applications since Georgia started providing school vouchers to students with special needs, we were able to be more selective with our new intake. They fit our student profile of "average to high intelligence, with mild to moderate learning disabilities" very well. In fact, one of my sixth graders is smarter than I am. He just has the attention span of a gnat and the emotional maturity of a dignified third grader.
Those of you that subscribe to my feed on Facebook know all about my struggles with fifth period US History. This is my big class of ten students. I finally got them to be quiet for minutes at a stretch today when we were making the covers for our Interactive Student Notebooks. That and loudly announcing "I can't hear anyone who doesn't have their hand up" until they got the hint.
My Georgia class is going very smoothly. With the exception of two new students, they've all had me before, so they know my patterns. In fact, during Open House, they all marched in yelling "Jennifer! Just like old times! I call my old desk!" I was worried they'd be all shouty all year, since they are familiar with me, but they quickly settled down. My assistant principal is going to be observing this class several times a week as part of his Master's program. I haven't gotten much in the way of formal observation in my teaching career, so I'm looking forward to someone actually telling me how to do this better.
Applied Problem Solving is a disaster so far. I'm pretty sure two kids just signed up because they like me and not to do the actual work. (The class is based on the engineering camps I used to teach at SciTrek) I've had to remove one of them from class once already for blatant disregard for safety. And I got the assistant principal to agree that if he screws up twice more, he gets a schedule change. I think the threat of removing him from class will curb much of his monkeyshines, since I really do think he wants to take this class.
My homeroom is once again terrifyingly easy to deal with. I think they are lying in wait for me to drop my guard. I've marked out one of my new sixth grade girls in that class as a potential pay level three. The new girls have picked up checking pretty fast and the most drama centric girl has told me she's trying hard this year not to get herself into those situations again. We'll see. I know she's a manipulator.
Anyways, I'm going back to bed.

My proposal to present at the Georgia Independent Schools annual conference was accepted today. I'll be presenting on the use of multi-media in the social studies classroom. So for at least part of that day, I won't be sitting in some boring, useless seminar like I usually do at these conferences.
