Forums, fics and finking (?) about fandom communities.
I've been working on a little project for the last couple of days and I guess now it's ready to open to the public: Mesmerised & Eye on Fowl Forums. My old review board was crap so I've moved to a new host and added lots of discussion forums. Yay! Hopefully this one will actually get, you know, members. Join, you know you want to.

Also on the fandom strain, I've a new drabble for you.

-----

Next Year

This was the first quiet moment since Juliet had rushed back from Tunisia and saved them from Loafers.

"I didn't pass," she said.

Butler looked up. She was staring at the floor. They were alone in the room.

Butler struggled to find words. He knew Juliet had wanted to pass but he'd hoped she wouldn't. Not because she'd equal his record, no, nothing that selfish. It was because the blue diamond was the first step to being a bodyguard, to killing, to losing yourself. How could he want that for his little sister?

"Next year," he said. Always next year.

-----

I seem to be doing this whole Butler, Juliet, loss of innocence thing a lot lately. Hmm. *shrugs*

Plus, as a bonus, yet another fairlyrubbishactually!drabble that I would otherwise have ignored.

-----
Severance

"You've grown a lot in two years. The last time I saw you, you were a little girl," said Holly.

Juliet smiled. "A lot can happen in two years. I spent most of that time wrestling big hairy men." And thinking about the civilisation beneath my feet. About that Christmas. About you.

"You should see fairy wrestling. Two pumped-up gnomes having it out in a zero G chamber. Not a pretty sight. I'll send you a videodisc."

Juliet's heart leapt. Holly would...? Then she remembered. "No, you won't."

"You're right. No, I won't."

Juliet lamented possibilities denied.

-----

It's H/J but "canon scenes from another perspective" drabbles are always a bit cheap. I think I worked out that 74 of these 100 words are actually quoted from the book. Which is why it's just a bonus, not a proper drabble. XD;;

I really think we should start up [info]af100 again. We need more active AF communities. We don't really have an active AF discussion community either... Maybe I should start one? Although, we did have one before. That was [info]lowerhaven, wasn't it? [info]howlerspeak was the fanfic community. Might be easier to start a discussion community again though: non-members don't tend to notice old groups restarting.

[info]af100 is now started up again; Challenge #7 - Water. No, I'm not a mod, but if someone's posting a challenge I'm sure someone will answer it. And we should both go and post our recent drabbles over there, for the sake of it. Active is whatever we make of it.

I liked the first drabble, but, yes, I was about to go counting up the canon words as well in the second. If you'd made it reflective of the scene, not taking place during the scene itself then you could have done a bit more with the H/J and a little less of the quotations. Perhaps even something out of a halfdrabble, if it's just thoughts hinted to and such.

Go forth! Revive AF100!

Yaaayyy! *dances* Ooh, now I have to think of something for #7. :D I'll pick out some of my drabbles to post too: I've done a whole bunch recently so I might as well post the better ones.

I wrote the second drabble in the early hours of the morning and so I wasn't quite so sane collected as usual and thus didn't really think about anything like that 'til I'd finished. Really it's something that needs more space than what I had to work with, so maybe I'll revisit it sometime: less of the quotage, more of the inner thoughts and ANGST. ;D

I've never really had a problem with prompts; I can always think of something reasonably quickly. I flipped open the closest book (The Complete Poems of Samuel Taylor Coleridge, if you're interested) and picked the first viable word I read. And about two minutes later I pulled up a post-it-note and scribbled three water ideas. In otherwords, I'm sure you'll think of something. And then write it. And then revive af100.

Yes, it's the ability to angst and inner thought that I thought was the potential of the drabble, and not quite enough when squeezed around the quotes. If it had been post-scene then yhou could have had a single reference to the scene in question 'gnomes... ha!' and then angsted for the next 98 words.

Oh, it's not lack of ideas in this case, but the profusion of ideas. I mean, there's so many ways you could take "water" - as an element, as a symbol of life, as part of the Ritual... and that's just for starters. I may have to write more than one.

I think if I was going to rewrite it, I'd want to do it in a lot more depth, i.e. make it a ficlet not just a drabble. It'd give me a chance to bring in a lot more of the issues and such surrounding Holly/Juliet, and Holly and Juliet as characters - which I never intended to be in that drabble at all.

Ah, well, in that case write 'em all! I'm particularly unimaginative when it comes to water - I've got four ideas, three of which are set in the Bay of Kola, one of which is UP!OMG!!UP!!11

Well, if you do decide to expand it power to you. What ever happened to the tossed up notion of you joining fanfic100 with Jolliet? I feel so lonely in my little 'General Series' box.

I KNOW!!!1 I'VE SEEN IT!! :0 :0

I've written one already - I did it on the day you posted the challenge. XD; And I've already got an idea for another. But they have a rather, umm, odd interpretation of "water" and I'm not sure the first one is really that clear on what the connection is...

What happened to the notion, basically, was A Levels. If I have ideas for Jolliet fics, I'll write them. But signing up the fanfic100 would make me get twitchy because I would always feel like I should be doing more for it, no matter what I or anyone else would tell me. And I really don't have the time at the moment, nor the necessary brainspace for the twitching not to distract me. :/ Sorry dearling.

Ooooh, post it. I wanna read drabbles and generally procrastinate! Odd interpretations of 'water' are fine, I'm sure; they make life/drabbles more interesting. And, I mean, who's going to be to bringing the Rules down on our heads? If it's completely abstract then make a little author's note explaining it, but do it in such a way that *obviously* you're only explaining for people who haven't read the books, or something.

But... wah? I thought you were, like, finished finito teleute complete. A-Levels were no more. Are you splitting the course over two years because of your ME or do I just not get the British school system?

Yeah, signing up for Discworld is making me nervous about not having written anything for it yet. Exaserbated by the fact that I've *never* written any Discworld. I think, generally, Fanfic100 is making me consider how to write things smaller, so that I can tick them off my list, and writing too *much* has always been a problem for me. Ideally I'll have the 100 AF fics finished by March next year, which is when Uni starts. The Discworld will probably take me much longer, if only because my planning for any of those are only three sentences, rather than pages and pages for some of the AF ones. All in all, I don't want you to be twitchy or stressed, because that's no fun and fanfic100 *should* be fun.

I would but as the other drabble uses the same interpretation of water and I think will be clearer on why, I'd rather post them together. :3 Only I haven't written the second yet. Bad Kitty, bad.

*guesses you have only just started reading her LJ again* I failed two of my A Levels dear and have to retake. :/ (That said, technically "A Levels" are spread over two years: AS is the first year, A2 the second. So I'm mainly retaking A2 modules.)

You seriously write pages of planning for drabbles?? o_o; I'm scared by that. I never do any planning, except maybe construct a few sentences in my head. Basically I just hold tight to the idea and try to staple it to the page. XD;

Do you know which Uni you want to go to, btw?

Ah, yes, no LJ reading happened for months. How does failing work for A-levels (if I'm not putting my foot into something very impolite)? For the HSC people who get a score below 30% get given a row of *** instead of a ranking, but because it's a highly manipulated ranking it's not actually 30% of the state who necessarily fails. And although you can fail individual subjects, so long as it's not an N-Award (not enough effort, didn't turn up etc) the fail mark will count towards final Uni rank out of 100 and you don't have to repeat the course. (I knew that the A Levels were split over AS and A2, but thought that only A2 counted. I also thoguht yours might have been more splitas a special provision; in NSW you can do HSC over 5 years!)

No, I don't write pages of planning for drabbles (a big-sized post-it is about it, whcih is to make sure I don't forget an inspiring quote or soemthing). But I do write pages and pages for any plotty fic over 1000 words, which I've got a few of for both my AF and Discworld fanfic100 tables. And with any Major Fics (ie 42) I attack it in an imitated version of your own numbering system.

Sydney Uni probably, at least for first year. My cousins went to Sarah Lawrence in New York, which specialises in creative arts and focuses on writing rather than exams, and I'd love to go there. My Dad doesn't want me to do an entire degree overseas, however, so I might just go there for a year. It's a work in progress.

I definitely agree we need a new AF discussion community. _artemisfowl was recently deleted unceremoniously, wasn't it? Also, I joined [info]af100 a while ago for the sake of it being Artemisy and fanfictiony and all, but it's as good as dead right now. ;_; There has been very little AF fandom activity on LJ these days, and I'm sure a fandom with 1500 fanfics and hundreds of unique authors can do better, even if only a small percentage of us are regular LJers. For the sake of more Artler and Jolliet, I say we revive the LJ fandom! *plans to finish the Fowl Park icon collection, stat*

Random disappearances seem to be the thing with AF comms. ^^; So you think we should make a whole new one? Fresh start? What about [info]mudfairies as a name...?

I think it's a vicious cycle: there's no AF fandom activity on LJ because nobody can be bothered with it, nobody can be bothered with it because there's no AF fandom activity. :/

Hear hear! Artler and Jolliet all round! Now pass the tea and scones dear.

[info]mudfairies sounds fantastic. You should do the honours, Kitty. It's high time Livejournal got itself a stylish new AF comm for underground fandomers to flounce about. I'd make promo banners, but I'll be dead busy till November 1st. u_u

Rofl. We could use that as our tagline but then Puffin would steal it.

Why would Puffin steal it? Are they in the habit of stealing bad puns? I could set up my grandpa as a diversion in that case.

Have you not seen Colfer Confidential? :0 You have to go and sign up for it! It's this fanzine that Puffin did this summer, you can get it off their website. They used "so good, it's criminal" - but spelt it wrong! XD;;

Oh, how utterly hillarious. I bet They just went online for some target market research, one of the little under-secretaries wrote it in a margin and then someone higher up thought it'd make a good tagline. Funny, funny, funny.

LOL, thank you. XD;
