Comic Con Update This is the big week, Comic Con in San Diego. This year Misty and I will be sharing Booth #1803 with our friends Kandrix and Laurie (The Art Of Laurie B!) and the team from Go Animate. Here's a sneak peak of something kinda cool Misty and I will be announcing at our booth Wednesday, Preview Night. We will be at the booth throughout the convention, so come on by for more info. and a few surprises. In addition, Misty is a consultant this year for the Eisner Awards (the theme is "The Magic of Comics") so get ready for some wizardry at the big show. Also, I will be making the rounds at the Warner Video table (Thursday afternoon) and DC at Top Cow (TBD) and taking part on a variety of panels: THURSDAY, JULY 24th 10:30-11:30 Freaks, Geeks, and Tiny Toons— Warner Home Video brings the hit animated television series Tiny Toon Adventures and Freakazoid! to DVD on July 29. This panel features Bruce Timm (storyboard artist, character designer), John McCann (Douglas Douglas, Hero Boy story editor), Paul Rugg (Freakazoid writer), Sherri Stoner (writer, producer, story editor), Paul Dini (writer, story editor), Jean MacCurdy (executive producer), Rich Arons (producer, writer, director) and Andrea Romano (voice director). They're tiny, they're toony, they're all a little loony! Executive produced by Steven Spielberg, Tiny Toon Adventures is a Daytime Emmy Award animated series that spawned a whole new generation of madcap Looney Toons characters, including Buster Bunny, Babs Bunny, Plucky Duck, and Hamton J. Pig, among others. Freakazoid! aired for two seasons. Also executive produced by Spielberg, this Daytime Emmy Award–winning series chronicles the adventures of Freakazoid, a manic, insane superhero who battles a vast array of supervillains. Room 6A FRIDAY, JULY 25th 2:15-3:15 DC: Batman: No Rest for The Dark Knight— Batman is the original dark hero. He lives a life pledged to helping the helpless and punishing the guilty, but this summer everything is going to change. With a blockbuster hit in theatres and a darker storyline than ever before, now's the time to celebrate the minds behind the bat! Senior editor Michael Marts, Grant Morrison (Batman), Paul Dini (Detective Comics), Dustin Nguyen (Detective Comics), Brian Azzarello (Joker), and others discuss the mythos of the Bat and what looms ahead for our hero. Room 6A SATURDAY, JULY 26th (I’m not listed in the program as being on the panel, but I will probably appear on it) 3:00-4:00 Top Cow: Herd It Through the Bo-Vine— Members of the Top Cow Editorial staff and special guests will be on hand to discuss Pilot Season 2008, Broken Trinity, the Witchblade movie, The Darkness, and other exciting, upcoming projects. Panelists include Marc Silvestri (Cyberforce); Seth Green and Hugh Sterbakov (Freshmen); Ron Marz and Stjepan Sejic (Witchblade); Phil Hester and Michael Broussard (The Darkness); William Harms (Bad Mojo), who will discuss his new Top Cow book, Impaler; and Randy Queen (Darkchylde), who will talk about his new series, Starfall. All attendees will receive a ticket for a special Freshmen signing with Seth Green and Hugh Sterbakov at the Top Cow Booth (#2329) after this program. Room 2 See you there! Stuff Today over at iFanboy, I give some marginally helpful tips for surviving the looming SD comic con. http://www.ifanboy.com/content/articles/200_words_with_paul_dini__20_-_comic_con_corroboree_part_threeAlso in comic stores today the first of my five-part Batman VS Hush story starts in Detective #846. It will run thru late summer and fall, finally concluding with a double-sized issue, #850, in November. Back to work, finishing Hush part III and finalizing details and surprises for comic con. One surprise I can let out now -- Top Cow is shipping in a few advance cases of the MADAME MIRGE trade paperback for the con. It doesn't hit book and comic stores until mid-September, but you can score it early (signed, if you like) at the Top Cow booth while supplies last. I'll have more con stuff to report, including panels, next week. Current Mood: blah | | Thursday, June 19th, 2008 | | 7:22 pm |
The dish on Hush CBR has an interview with me on the next Batman arc I'm writing, "The Heart of Hush," a twisted story of romance and revenge starting next month in DETECTIVE COMICS. Father's Day This morning I was surprised by three awesome Father's Day cards from Rashy, Super Rica and Worf, and the coolest Father's Day present I will ever receive: a mint in the box Mattel Official Detective Shootin' Shell Snub-Nose .38. (BIG thanks to Misty for helping the kids with their gift selection!;) It may seem hard to believe in this era of Lego Star Wars and Tickle Me Elmo, but at one point boys toys were actually fun to play with. Check out the link below to see the manliest toy ever: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=o29EGYBbVIANow that's a TOY, Jack! The only thing it's missing is a pack of Luckies and you can swipe that off your old man's dresser. Boy, the kids in 1959 had it made. I see boys today "dueling" with their flashing Harry Potter wands and I want to cry. A Greenie cap-firing Snub-Nosed .38 puts some REAL magic in your hand, son! To round out the Father's Day theme, I offer the following classic from Chuck Jones. This goes out with lots of love to Bob and Stan (as well as Bruce, Dan and Skip) and long-suffering dads everywhere. http://poetv.com/video.php?vid=37341&what=VOTING Current Mood: touchedCurrent Music: "Father's Day" by Groucho Marx | | Saturday, June 7th, 2008 | | 11:09 pm |
Tidbits John McCain announced this week he'd like to see a man on Mars. So would I, namely John McCain. *** In other political news, Rashy says he has thrown his full support behind Barack Obama and endorses him with the slogan, "I'm wack for Barack." Catchy. *** I'm glad lots of readers have written in to say how much they liked the chatroom scene in TEC #845. Only I should point out the redheaded mystery fan is not Barbara Gordon. She's just a girl who happens to like mysteries. For a brief second I toyed with the idea of asking Dustin to draw her like Velma from "Scooby Doo," but wisely realized that would be too icky-geeky even for me. *** The Comic-Con juggernaut is starting again. Misty and I will be in San Diego and we will announce what we're doing when the date gets closer. Meantime I've had a slew of folks already after me to do panels, eat meals and do signings. And here I thought this year we'd just make a circuit of the dealer's room and spend the rest of the weekend and the zoo and beach. Haw, haw. Right. On the spinner racks today... ...in DETECTIVE #845, join Batman and a group of Gotham's greatest sleuths as they attempt to solve "The Riddle Unanswered." This issue is sort of a turning point as it will be the last self-contained Batman story for a while. Starting next month, the return of Hush in a multi-part epic that may take a lot of people by surprise. See you at the funny book store. Worf watch Yes indeed, this is "Worf - the Boston Terrier," as his name reads on his hospital chart. The little guy got real sick over the weekend and it was touch and go for a while, what with trips back and forth between the vet and animal emergency. Thanks to everyone who expressed good wishes, especially the gang who came over on Monday and offered friendship and support. He seems to be better today and might be allowed to come home tonight. Here's hoping. We miss him. Current Mood: drainedCurrent Music: "I Still Miss Someone" - Johnny Cash | | Thursday, May 22nd, 2008 | | 11:09 am |
News bites... It's been a while. Here's what's up... Spent the 10th thru the 18th in England, working on Mystery Project X. It's been my second trip over there and things are shaping up nicely. Hopefully I'll have an announcement on it toward fall. *** Did very little but work while I was in the UK. Ate at several good Indian places and saw a nice production of PYGMALION at the Old Vic. Wanted to get to the Natural History Museum at Tring, but I was pretty much bound to the city every day. No time for sightseeing, Dr. Jones. And speaking of that... *** Saw the new Indiana Jones flick last night. It was ok. If you've seen the other three, this one falls right in line with them. Just as the James Bond films became defined by their strict adherence to plot and character repetition (you could say the same thing about Harry Potter, for that matter) so has Indiana Jones. In fact, I was surprised at how closely the new Indy flick stuck to the formula. Just when I thought they might do something a little surprising with his character (or the other characters in the flick) it was back to the tried and true. A couple of scenes pissed me off, a ridiculous one with Shia and a bunch of monkeys (suddenly we're in a Tarzan movie now?) and the one big emotional reveal, which Lucas and Spielberg staged while some characters were sinking in semi-quicksand. Unwilling to let their characters actually talk to each other, they have to sneak important information in while Indy and a friend are fighting for their lives in a preposterous situation. The filmmakers no longer trust Indy to say more than a line or two of dialogue without fists or poison darts wizzing at his head and that's sad. *** This week's 200 WORDS also deals with Indiana Jones in a roundabout way. A short tale concerning my old days at Skywalker Ranch and the rediscovery of an object near and dear to both Dr Jones and myself. http://www.ifanboy.com/content/articles/200_Words_with_Paul_Dini__13_-_Raiders_of_the_Lost_Archives*** And last but never least, MADAME MIRAGE #6 is out this week. This one wraps up Harper and Angie's story, but never fear, the mysterious Madame will be fading back into view soon. Current Mood: tired | | Thursday, May 8th, 2008 | | 6:47 pm |

Dog daze II We have a new dog. He is a rescued Boston terrier named Worf. We love him a lot and I will be writing more about him and posting photos once I figure out how. In the meantime, here's a link to the latest 200 Words, a lesson for me in hubris and the whims of fame. http://www.ifanboy.com/content/articles/200_Words_with_Paul_Dini__12_-_FAMEI have been meaning to post responses to the folks who write in to the 200 Words column at iFanboy but I am having much computer trouble each time I try. If you want a response, or to chat or whatever regarding the column, please leave me a message here and I will try to rectify the posting problem at iFanboy by next week. | | Friday, April 25th, 2008 | | 12:59 am |

The Weekly Woozle First off, in answer to the question I've been asked no less than twelve times just today, no, I will not be going to the New York Comic Convention this weekend. Please understand I have nothing against the con. Indeed, other than nearly mixing it up with a surly lout who pushed Misty aside and told me to go screw myself (not so politely) I had a pretty good time last year. However, last year I was a guest, and with no one footing the bill this time, and with no new projects for me to announce at the moment, I didn't see much reason in going. Not that I don't looooove getting to New York every chance I can. I was born there and still feel close ties to the city. Back in the early to mid-ninties I was blessed with generous friends who lived in LA but maintained a usually vacant swanky mid-town Manhattan apartment. If I wanted to take a week and write a Batman script "at home" I would pack my laptop and write it out of their apartment, being canny enough not to tell the other producers exactly whose home I was writing from. I still have the same generous friends and they still have the same swanky apartment, though they have since long-term leased it to writers working on a New York-based sit-com. Now when I go to NYC, I have to pop for a hotel. Ah me, I sure do have it tough. Though I won't be in New York this weekend, you can read about some of my favorite things to do there in an article soon to be printed in the New York Post. Reporter Chris Cassuto asked me what I would do with 50 bucks to spend however I wanted to in the Big Apple and I came up with a few ideas. I think it turned into a fun piece. I will post a link to it when it appears. Speaking of links, the one below will take you to the latest installment of our home improvement adventures. http://www.ifanboy.com/content/articles/200_Words_with_Paul_Dini__10_-_THE_AC_CHRONICLES_Part_Two Current Mood: nostalgicCurrent Music: "New York State Of Mind" by Floyd Pepper | | Thursday, April 10th, 2008 | | 12:41 am |
Air woes The imposing structure that is Castle Dinistein boasts many strange and unique things. A sofa made from an old navajo blanket. An electric piano that serves only as a base for a bust of Dr. Teeth. A stuffed grizzly in full indian war bonnet. Books of arcane mystic lore, devices of trickery and deception, living sock monkeys and a growing collection of robot beavers. The one thing we don't have? Air conditioning. All that changes this week as we begin our first major upgrade on the old family mansion. You can read the first installment here: http://www.ifanboy.com/content/articles/200_Words_with_Paul_Dini__9_-_THE_AC_CHRONICLES_Part_OneMore misery and merriment to come. Sugar, Sugar... In comics stores today, DETECTIVE #843 reveals the true identity of the new Ventriloquist. One or two astute readers have already cracked the who, but no one has yet hit upon the why. This issue will shed a glimmer of light on Sugar's motivations, paving the way for our all hell breaks loose finale in TEC #844. Scarface sez: "Buy it, ya bums! Better yet, steal it!"
