Previous Entry Add to Memories Tell a Friend Next Entry

Ok, yesterday I got a call from Kaiser, they said call them back (for which I'd have to look up the number) or call this pager number (that they claimed would get a call back in as few minutes)

So I call the pager number. 40 minutes later, no response. So I look up the number and call them.

The nurse tells me that it is indeed hyrdocele. And then goes into this song and dance about how lots of guys have them and are just fine for years. Then it's "so does it bother you? Is it painful?"

My response of "yes, if I'm not careful it can be painful" gets more song and dance about "does it bother you a lot?"

So I go "fuck this" in my head and say "It's as big as my fist."

Momentary silence followed by "So you'll be wanting a referral for a consult then?"

So I got a referral for a consult. Today I get the call from the appointment person at *that* clinic. The appointment is for Dec 7th.

I just *love* HMOs... *not*.

at least it's something easy to fix - and, trust me, you'll be a lot happier.

Hell. *before* it went into the "rapid growth" bit that got me to make an appointment, I was thinking about how to get them to *consider* "just get rid of it..."

Now my worry is if they can actually get whatever they do *scheduled* while I can still afford coverage... I mean, it's a month until I see the urologist.

Knowing the system, I rather doubt that they'll actually *do* anything then. And Jan 1 my premiums go up. Probably *way* up, because I crss the magic "50 years old at start of year" boundary. Bah!

Let me know when you *find* one...

So far I have yet to find any country that meets all my criteria.

Well, we complain alot about our National Health Service, but it is free. We are also covered free in other European Community countries. We both got NHS cards before we went to Spain.

what are your criteria?

i'd have to start with comprehensive and universal health coverage. decent, free (or at least heavily subsidized) child care for working parents would be good too. then there would have to be governmental non-interference in religious and sexual matters - this would include same-sex marriage having the same legal status as any other form of marriage. in fact, i'd prefer governmental non-interference in general (freedom of speech, travel, etc.) and, of course, the place has to have a decent climate, which for me means "please don't get any hotter than 80 F., and that only rarely".

i think i'm describing a Scandinavian country...

You know, I'm sure there are valid reasons a nurse would end up working for an HMO as telephone triage. Illness, age, back injuries, etc. I'd like to think that moving into teaching kept me from descending to that level. I like to think I'd go to work playing piano in a bordello before I went that low.

Well, Wednesday's call had the callback being the "advice nurse" number for the clinic.

Oh, I forgot the best part of Wednesday. An hour and a half *after* I'd talked to them, I got this confused call asking why I'd paged them. And I got to explain that I'd sent the page *three hours* ago.
