The problem with public transport in America [May. 19th, 2008|01:11 am]
On those days when I go into the dA office, it's a 70 mile drive through LA freeways, with gas at record (for America) prices.

So I naturally considered taking the train. There's a station in scenic San Bernadino about 7 miles away, and once I reach LA I could take a short bus ride to the office.

There's just one problem. The car is: cheaper, faster, and more convenient.

I'd be far more tempted by the train if it produced a saving in at least one of these areas.

Relocation to coffee-shop, there to be the height of pretension: complete [May. 15th, 2008|06:43 am]
My god, genuine xenophobic ranting. How quaint.

I'm not ever sure that I've ever heard someone use the phrase "the Red Chinese" in all seriousness before.

Ubuntu: sharing music with iTunes [May. 7th, 2008|12:06 am]
1. sudo aptitude install mt-daapd
2. Edit /etc/mt-daapd.conf so that mp3_dir = [your music directory]. (Also any other configuration changes you might want to make; the file is well-commented.)
3. sudo /etc/init.d/mt-daapd restart

Really this would work on any Debian-derived distro... but I've only tried it on Ubuntu.

Disadvantages of a Hollywood office [May. 6th, 2008|11:39 pm]
Yesterday when leaving work I stepped out the back door of our building and almost blundered through someone filming a scene for something.

The back doors of our building had been made over into a hospital entrance, and someone who was the very embodiment of The Wise Old Bum was dispensing advice to people in scrubs, while some sort of faux-homeless band played on the bridge crossing the alley to the parking garage.

Weird.

Dilberty [Apr. 25th, 2008|09:25 am]
[info]skyknyt: Scott Adams points out the existence of dilbert.com/fast, which lets you read Dilbert without all the flash junk on the front page.

(I mention this because my obsessive referrer checking noticed you'd linked to my Dilbert viewer in the context of how crufty their new site is.)

Ubuntu 8.04 (Hardy Heron) [Apr. 24th, 2008|08:17 am]
Ubuntu 8.04 (aka Hardy Heron) was released today. Y'know, for the many of you who use it. (Hi Tia!)

Look, a screenshot tour!

Download it here. (Or: they'll ship you a free CD.)

I switched a bit over a month ago. It's still going fine -- haven't had to boot back into Windows yet.

Health insurance is insane [Apr. 22nd, 2008|02:29 pm]
Cost of COBRA coverage for me+Kellie: $900.48 / month.

Mmm... 90 days of not having health insurance it is!

(I'm sure that we could spend more than $2700 on healthcare in the next 90 days. But the odds are very much against our needing to.)
