[fmp!] take me away

summer '08 booklist (back-dated)

So I've decided to make it a tradition to read a shit-load of books over the summer, considering the fact that I pretty much do NO recreational reading over the academic year.  if a title is in Japanese, I read it in Japanese; otherwise, I'm reading everything here in English. Bolded titles mean I own the book.

Feel free to offer recs!

movie marathon 2008

So even though I decided to read a shit-ton of books today, I still haven't had the time/energy to get my ass down to the Miami Public Library.  But my roommates and I have signed up for Netflix, so I've decided a movie!list for the summer is in order.

random updates.

  • I caved in and got a Lang-8.  Come and comment on my pitiful Japanese!
  • Monkey Majik, please never stop making music EVER plzkthx.  (Blaise, please please PLEASE release a hard-copy album for The Alphabet Project!) YUI, this goes to you too, but please stop throwing oddly-pronounced English into your otherwise amazing songs.
  • Summer J-Drama Season! Right now I'm watching Shibatora (OMG TEPPEI RABU~) and Yasuko to Kenji.... Both of them seem like they could go down the Gokusen route in terms of "must reform the younguns", but the theme songs are good and the stories are relatively interesting...
  • Thanks to the manga version (which they NEED to continue ASAP), and some fansites, I'm officially interested in Shinrei Tantei Yakumo.  I came this close to buying the novels, but I decided I need to finish the other three Japanese novels on my to-read list before I attempt a series. -_-a The English fanbase for this series is almost non-existant-- they even made a drama adaptation back in 2006, but no one bothered to post it on D-Addicts.

Question - has anyone here used BK1 to get Japanese books/manga? I'd like to try it but given my amazing track record with funabin (3 months?!), I can't decide if it's worth it or not

OL生活, the remix

Today I woke up to the horrible realization that my Japanese skills are slipping through my hands like water.
Why is this?
  1. I'm in Miami.  Spanish first, English second.  (Except I don't know any Spanish, which confuses people even more when I tell them my last name, a very common Spanish last name that is also common in the Philippines.  Since, you know, I'm Filipino-American and all.)
  2. My summer internship this time around has me working almost 12 hours a day for piss-poor pay, which gives me little free time to study.
  3. I only brought 2 Japanese study books for me, and I didn't realize they were 1kyuu focused instead of 2kyuu.
Luckily, I realized that it only takes around 5 hours to actually do the work I'm assigned, and then I can spend the rest of my time messing around on the computer until my coworkers/roommates (corporate housing, win/win?) are done.  So today, I've pretty much been listening to the huge backlog of podcasts I have (mainly 読売ニュース and Japanesepod101.com) in an effort to get my listening comprehension skills up to snuff.

I actually was hoping to buy some more 2kyuu books while I was here in Miami (I'm here until 8/16) but unfortunately, I need to have oral surgery next Tuesday.  Since I'm so far away from any dentists under my dental plan, I have to pay up front and then wait to get reimbursed - kinda blows when the estimated cost will be around $1200!

In other news, I went to a club the other night and I didn't realize that the bouncer didn't give me a 21+ bracelet. Um, hello, I know NJ licenses say UNDERAGE in big red letters, but right underneath that it says "UNTIL 06-04-2008"! I was too lazy to go back and argue for one though -_-;  Maybe I should take it as a compliment?!

-gets off lazy ass and updates-

Ok, no, I haven't fallen off the face of the earth, I swear.
I just... don't really watch anime anymore. I still keep up with manga though :x and j-drama.
  • Manga:
    • Hakusensha: Otomen, Skip Beat!!, Shiawase Kissa 3choume
    • almost anything in BetsuMa (but especially KimiTodo and Chouritsu!! Momonoki Koukou)
    • Jump: One Piece, Eyeshield 21, MxO (WTF crap ending was that?!)
    • Sunday: Inuyasha (please god let it end), Detective Conan (this case has been nothing but OSHIWTF)
    • Other: anything by Usami Maki, FMA, Mirai Nikki, Tsubasa/xxxHolic
  • J-drama:
    • finished Binbo Danshi and the ending sucked, but I still love Ogurin and Yamada Yu
    • Gokusen 3 (OMG KOIZUMI KOUTAROU!!!!!!!!!!!!!! and I'll throw in a ♥ for Miura Haruma, but KOIZUMI-SANNNNNNNNNNNN)
    • Ryokiteki na Kanojo (I actually think that SMAP dude's acting is pretty good, and I did laugh at parts, but I can't bring myself to watch past ep 3 for some reason?!)
    • Last Friends (the only one I'm watching subbed... damn it Kioku hurry up!)
    • Zettai Kareshi (HAYAMI MOKOMICHI♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ and the hot guy from Tokyo Wankei!)
I saw the Iron Man movie last week, and I was so impressed with RJD's arms the movie that I saw it again today. For $9. With my brother. (Yes, this is a big deal considering I have to be dragged kicking and screaming to pay over $7 to see a movie in theaters.) I even have IronMan!fic tagged in my memories! This is unprecedented.

Also, my summer internship is in Miami.  I'm continuing the tradition of a summer book-list despite not knowing whether I'll have access to a library, or how demanding the actual internship is: throw some recs my way if you can, please :)

KIDS

Koike Teppei AND Tamaki Hiroshi? In a movie together? YES PLZ.
Actually, I saw the TV spots for this while I was still in you-know-where and I remember my aunt, my cousin and obaachan laughing at me because I got depressed that I wouldn't be able to see it.  PLUS there's a WaT tour hitting Nagoya in... May?  Damn.... I'm still kicking myself for not going to the Monkey Majik live in November.

drama overload

Well, I've started watching Japanese dramas again.  I managed to finish Brother Beat, which I generally liked (although the writing got weaker around episode 6.)  Out of the Winter 2008 season, I'm watching One Pound Gospel subbed and Binbo Danshi raw.  I really like both a lot, but I prefer Binbo Danshi a bit more (even though my comprehension for this is about 80%).  In terms of theme songs though, I really don't like One Pound Gospel's... I guess I'm just not a fan of KAT-TUN... but Bennie K did Binbo Danshi's and I can't wait for the full-length one of that to come out.

For my reference (numbered in order of importance,)

Currently downloading:
1) Binbo Danshi 2/? *RAW
2) One Pound Gospel 3/?
3) Sexy Voice and Robo 10/11; need to watch episode 7 *currently downloading*

Finish watching:
4) Hotelier 8.5/9; finish watching the last half of episode 9
5) Kirakira Kenshuui 6?/11
9) Bambino 2/11
10) Tokyo Wankei 4/11
11) Densha Otoko 3/11 + 3 specials *download last 2 specials*
12) Nobuta wo Produce 0/11, check for corrupted files

Watched in Japan, need to download/finish watching
6) Nodame Cantabile 6/11+2 specials - watched most of it during the New Year's marathon they had before the 2 specials in Japan.... but I forgot to watch the specials!
7) Abarenbo Mama! 2/11 - started watching it, but then my teacher moved all our weekly tests/quizzes to Wednesdays
8) Swan No Baka 0.75/11 - see above
15) Renai Shousetsu 2006 1/1 *RAW - watched this during Japanese class in Nagoya AND read one of the short stories it was based on. I own the book too *_*

Pick up?
13) CA to Oyobi 1/11 *RAW
14) Otoko no Kosodate 0/8 *RAW - the only reasons I'm considering this are because 1) Koizumi Kotaro is cute and 2) I saw this advertised every day during my morning commute in Nagoya.

love comes and goes

OMG m-flo HAS A NEW SONG with Hinouchi Emi, Ryohei, Emyli, Yoshika, and Lisa!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!  I thought ending the m-flo loves series with Crystal Kay was fine, but this one's even better because they have everyone in the m-flo family (except for melody, but that might have been overkill).

http://youtube.com/watch?v=b8DXFLjCHNc

I think it's definitely one of their "needs one more listen to be likeable" songs (Luvotomy, anyone?) The PV makes me squee though - Yoshika as the manager, Emi as the stylist, poor neglected Ryohei as the security cop with the least screen time LOL, Emyli dancing at completely random moments, Lisa's flipping awesome solo, the alien from Love Don't Cry. and everyone dancing at the end.

BUT! The new best album's track listing disappointed me.... how can they NOT include Picture Perfect Love or Love Me After 12 AM, but put in Lotta Love and HEY! instead?!!  I mean, Lotta Love isn't that bad, but to have 2 versions of that song on the DVD and the original on the CD is just overkill.

oh stable wireless internet, how i missed you so

Finally got around to installing wireless internet in my apartment.  Although the bittorrent rates are shit, it's better than nothing at all, right? RIGHT?!

It's a little late, but here are my goals for this year:

1) Eat healthier by trying to make your own bento lunches every day. Also, exercise.
2) Sign up for and pass the JLPT 2kyuu by studying Japanese for at least an hour five times a week (not counting class time or homework for class time, because JAPAN 302 here is a joke)
3) Stop being so damn cynical about Ithaca/Cornell - 1 1/2 years and you're done!
4) Do something new.  I've already studied abroad, I need a new goal now.
5) Find a summer job/internship that doesn't blow.

That's about it, really.

[ouran] emo corner

well that's just how it goes

The first entry I write in my Livejournal in a long time and it's a depressing one.

I'm not sorry for not being interested in smoking pot.  I'm not sorry for not being in a sorority.  I'm not sorry for not having a boyfriend.  I'm not sorry for not wanting to drink beer all the time (mainly because I hate the taste of beer - give me a shot of vodka and it's a whole new ballgame.) I'm not sorry for not having a car to drive around.  I'm not sorry for wanting more than just a shit-end job and semi-decent grades.  I'm not sorry for having shit-crazy jetlag and I'm definitely not sorry for missing my family both in Japan and the Philippines.

I'd be lying if I said I wasn't sorry that we fell out of touch, but I'd also be lying if I said it wasn't going to happen.  It happened to me in middle school and it happened to me now.  You know - the whole, "oh yeah we'll stay friends forever" thing is fucking bullshit.  I haven't heard from you since I left for Japan - that was in August of last year.  No one can blame me for not trying to get in touch with you.  Even so, why do people still associate us with each other? I'm just tired of being "that girl I used to be friends with back when I was younger", is all.  I'm not really mad at you or anything, and that's the truth.  A little melancholy maybe, but not mad.  You've changed to the point where I don't even know you anymore, and I'm sorry that I have a bad habit of romanticizing the past.

In other unrelated news, I return to Ithaca only to find out that it still blows.

Soooooooo I got my new laptop, and while it's shiny, light, and fast (Lenovo/IBM Thinkpad X61, Windows Vista Ultimate 2.2GHz Intel Core Duo, 1.96GB RAM, docking station with DVD-RW+, 100GB 7200rpm hard drive, etc etc), all my personal files are back on my old laptop in the States. (Shit, why didn't I bring my external HD?!) And the new camera I purchased right before I left for Japan is not Vista-capable (Fuck you Samsung!) but my laptop has a built-in SD reader so I'm good. Also, the lack of wireless in both my house and Nanzan's campus irritates me... I mean, I can understand not having it at home since there's only one dinky old computer that the kids use to play games, but an entire university having wired laptop internet access in 2 rooms?!!! I suppose it's probably due to the whole keitai culture, but shit, y'all. In any case, I won't be able to update this as often as I originally thought I would, but I'll try to write something at least once a week because I know I'll regret it if I don't.
