Vote early, vote often.
This is a straw poll for the Fish vs. Reptile debate. While I'm solidly in the fish camp, bribes will be considered.

A consideration: which is easist to take care of / safely leave unattended for an extended period of time?

Lizards all the way. Easy to care for once set up, can be picked up and petted (Just you try that with a guppy - or don't.) and can typically be left for a fair amount of time so long as they have water and have been fed well several days in advance.

Actually, it has been observed that there exist fish willing to be petted, but they're not very common...

It occurs to me that you currently have both lizards and cats. How do your scalies and furries get along? Since Kady has two cats this may be a consideration.

Pretty well, actually. The cats don't get into the gecko vivariums (but like to watch them - it's like a slow-motion kitty TV) and the geckos occasionally taunt and threaten the cats.

I wouldn't leave the geckos free-roaming, though, without you right there to watch them - because I suspect a cat would treat them as a hairless tastymouse if they got hold of one.

But LARGER lizards (beardies, ackies) would probably get along even better - by intimidating the cats enough not to even try to eat them.

Get mudskippers -- then you could take 'em out and play with 'em! ;)

Sad, really. Nobody seems to like plants.

What about frogs or turtles?

I'm open to turtles.

What I really want to know is who are these three people that think Bax should be turned into a newt?

I have to admit to voting for that one -- I'm finding this entire discussion amusing, to say the least.

I want to know what the clicky thing is. :)

"Clicky thing" is for those who have no opinion but just want to vote.

Gotcha. That's how I used the 'Turn Bax into a newt!' option.

Besides, I think he'd make a cute eft, don't you? ;)

Turtles... require an awful lot of space. Most commonly kept species of turtle (Read: Red-eared Sliders) get to be eight to twelve inches long - and a 46-gallon tank isn't really big enough to accomodate their feeding requirements (The ability to have a water area that is twice their shell length in all directions, plus a land area with plenty of basking space, UV lighting, heating...

The way I see it, plants are a lock, simply because a fishtank or terrarium that big would look awfully dull without any, no matter what it held.

Yeah, but if we have just plants and lots of them we can make a rain forest.

No, I really don't have any sort of extreme reaction to spiders. They have their place in the world. It's just if it happened to get out, I know that the initial reaction of most people is to either scream in terror or smack it with something heavy - not exactly what I'm looking for in a pet.

I see. Seems reasonable. And I suppose the cats take care of the "cute and fluffy" pet quotient anyway.
