May. 11th, 2008 @ 08:55 am Pictures!
I'm getting a new digital camera this week! (Haven't yet decided what type, any tips?) So in honor of it, I've re-yoinked this from [info]guignolhornpipe.

Ask me to take pictures of any aspect of my life that you're interested in/curious about -- it can be anything from my favorite shirt to my cell phone. Leave your requests as a comment to this entry, I'll take the pictures and post them.

And I'm going to keep Nick's terms and conditions, because a) they're sensible, and b) the sentence "I'm not going to change for you people" needs more airplay:
* PG rating.
* I'd rather not post a picture of my room, because I'm a slob and I'm not going to change for you people.

a) righteousness.
b) judgment.
c) politics.
d) love.

Mood: inquisitive
Here's an invitation to open a discussion about the goings-on and happenings with the United States' election for President. Here's a few of my thoughts -- please comment and offer what you think -- counter or concur!

John McCain: Congratulations to this man on securing his party's nomination. I believe this man is an American hero, having read details of his prisoner-of-war experience, and deserves much respect for serving his country. All honorable servicemen and women do. He of all people, I feel, should recognize the atrocities of war and have neither desire nor stomach to continue the way things are currently going. In spite of my personal respect for him, his current politics (and position as yes-man to the Bush administration) are making me lean away from considering him a candidate I can conscientiously vote for.

Hillary Clinton: What does she believe party in-fighting is going to help? She really sits near Sen. McCain on most issues, making a choice between the two of them a semantic argument, given to single-issue voting -- not what we should be doing. She accuses Sen. Obama of using tactics "straight out of Karl Rove's playbook" when he suggests anything negative about her, then turns around and uses the fear-based strategy of the right wing to scare up some primary/caucus delegates. Shouldn't she be recognizing those same Rove strategies in herself? Issues aside, her hypocrisy is pushing me away.

Barack Obama: Sen. Obama has been the party's wunderkind for a few years now, and more power to anyone in that position. He has as yet resisted the negativity used by Sen. Clinton's campaign, and seems to be able to maintain (so far) a breath-of-fresh-air sort of aura. Certainly an Obama White House would at least have the feeling of sweeping out some cobwebs. People like to say he's "black". Which is half-true. He's also half-"white". Which makes him as much "white" as he is "black". Does/should it matter anyway? He has a funny, foreign-sounding name, which includes the name of a certain recently-deposed despot. It's also the name of the King of Jordan. It's a common name. Sen. Obama is the new kid on the political block, so to speak, what are the implications of that?

And.... go!

Feb. 24th, 2008 @ 11:40 pm California, there I went!
Just returned from southern California, the first time I've been there since, well, the '80s.

Wednesday, after discovering that my friend Levi would be leaving L.A. shortly after I got there and not returning until after I left (suspicious timing, Levi...), I boarded a plane to L.A. Alex drove me, so she could carsit while I was out, and realized I hadn't flown in a while and it's kinda scary when you think about it. My advice -- don't.

Landed in Long Beach, one of those small airports where you walk across the tarmac to get to the terminal. Grabbed some Japanese food, saw the lunar eclipse, then went straight to the studio to record some scratch vocals for a couple tracks. Surprise! Checked into the hotel and passed out.

Thursday, continental breakfast, back into the studio to meet our new Edison, a supremely gifted gentleman who flew in from Astoria for the project. Recorded, ate pizza, recorded more, ate dinner, headed in to meet the gathered ensemble, then left to soak in a hot bath since the hot tub was closed that late, enjoyed cabled TV and slept.

Friday, walked about 3 miles before being picked up in search of Throat Coat. Trader Joe's? Nope. Nutrition store? Nope. GNC in the mall? Finally. Long walk back to hotel, pick up, record, eat, record, eat, record, sleep.

Saturday, almost got hit by an old lady pulling out of a parking lot who decided pedestrians didn't have the right of way in California in spite of being directly in front of her car. Leapt out of the way, quite literally, as the car cleared my leg by a mere few inches. Made it to the studio in once piece. Finished up the day recording the "acceptance speech" for Tesla to accept the Edison Medal, then re-recorded the prime vocal over the ensemble tracks from Thursday night. At midnight, insisted on fixing the last phrase. It took 45 seconds to fix, but longer to convince them it needed to be done. I hate having to argue with people who don't trust the performer as an artist. Went back to the hotel and slept.

Today, flew back to sunny Seattle from rainy Orange County. Alex picked me up, and drove home, braving the freeway traffic and doing great. Took a nap and watched that statue show. Now to sleep before work tomorrow morning.

Feb. 18th, 2008 @ 03:21 am Cupcake Showdown, Pt. 2
A late entry into the Red Velvet Cupcake Showcase Showdown: Metropolitan Market. Evidently with all the cupcake fervor, they thought they'd put a stab out there for a share of the market. With the following results:

The size is nice and big, plenty of it, price comparable.... Taste -- like an iced corn muffin. (And I like corn muffins usually!) Blech. Bland, bland, bland. No perceptible cocoa, no velvet texture. All around, 4th place out of 3. (I'm even ranking them after the store I haven't ranked yet.) Boo.

Just finished a great long visit with my friend Marne, who wins 2nd place in the Bad Friend of the Year Award, for not telling me she was coming to town until she was here. But I win first place for never visiting her in the city she lives in, and always waiting for her to come to me.

A couple jack-and-ginger's later, good times, as usual. This time, no one shouting "Yankees Suck!" in Manhattan bars, but a couple karaoke songs. A trip to SanFran has now been ordered officially by everyone I know who lives there.

Feb. 10th, 2008 @ 10:58 pm It's raining toddler!
Tonight, I was going to put some sort of wish that our next president, whoever it be, simply be more literate than this one, and never once state, imply, or insinuate that they are speaking to, through, with, and/or for God. But I won't.

Instead you get this video from my niece's 2nd birthday party (I think it's better without sound):

Yes.... she's fine. She was fine. No harm, no foul. But comedy, yes. Watch and see how many objects you can identify being pulled down with her.

Mood: whimsical
There are two reputable cupcake places here in Seattle: Cupcake Royale, and Trophy Cupcakes. Both have their followers, and frankly, I'd rather walk the six blocks from my house to Trophy than have to drive to either Ballard or West Seattle to get me a Royale. So after being a loyal Royale (legalize frostitution!), I decided to try this other place in my neighborhood.

They both have the ever-popular Red Velvet cupcake, which is pretty much the only thing I get at Royale, so already a good sign for Trophy. Trophy charges 50 cents more per cake, and they're slightly smaller, so their good sign is revoked.

Here's the differences: Trophy cupcakes are fluffier, moister, with sweeter whipped frosting and more of it. Royale are denser, with a more grounded sweetness in their frosting. Trophy fell apart in my hand while I was trying to eat around the mountain of frosting (to get the desired cake/frosting taste ratio). Royale tends to stick to the paper a little, but usually has a nice ridge to nibble around.

Ultimately, Trophy's are like cool whip to Royale's heavier whipped cream. I found Royale's to be a bit messier (like the whipped cream that runs down the side of your pumpkin pie), and Trophy's to be a cleaner eat (in spite of the crumbs everywhere issue).

Preferred Status: Driving to Ballard. Darn it.

(Maybe another flavor-off is in order?)
