Scrabble on Sunday - NEW VENUE!
This Sunday is Scrabble time again, and if this rain lets up it will be outside in the park. (First time this year!) The twist is, it will be a different park - we're going to move to Parc Wilfred-Laurier, which is at Laurier and Mentana. Why the change? Parc Wilfred-Laurier has picnic tables, so hopefully we won't have to sit on the ground.

If it's still raining (boo!) Scrabble will be at Divan Orange, as usual.

Where: If sunny: Parc Wilfred-Laurier; if raining: Divan Orange
When: Sunday, July 27, at 3:00
What: Scrabble! Newcomers of all skill levels are welcome! Play in English or French!

Bring some food and drink and we'll make a picnic out of it! Bring a Scrabble board if you have one, just in case we're overwhelmed with people! Bring something to sit on (blankets, lawn chairs) just in case somebody's stolen the picnic tables! But mainly, bring your love of language!

Toronto fringe suggestions
Hey, Toronto people! Avery just posted a list of suggestions for things to see at the Fringe Festival. I disagreed with some of what he said, and I might as well back up the stuff I agreed with, so here's my take:

Blastback Babyzap. Go see it. It's by Uncalled For. QED.

This cannot be overstated. This is also the most mainstream thing on the list - it's just plain funny - so everyone reading this in Toronto should go see it even if you don't have any interest in the Fringe Fest per se.

Teaching the Fringe, by Keir Cutler. Except that Dr. Cutler won't be able to make it to your fringe, so Barry Smith, of Barry Smith's Baby Book (not to be seen in Toronto), will be doing the show on his behalf. That's a bit strange, because both Teaching the Fringe and Baby Book are autobiographical, and so now Barry is doing someone else's autobiography. Oh well, both of them were good. You might as well give it a shot.

Now I want to go to Toronto and see that, because this was a great show and I'd really like to see how it changed.

'Beth. As advertised.

This was ok, but nothing special.

Crude Love. Reputedly good. I didn't see this one either. Gee, I'm starting to sense a pattern here.

I don't know who reputed that this was good. It wasn't. Avery, I'd suggest you update your post because it sounds like you're recommending it, which you shouldn't be.

Jem Rolls. Dude, it's Jem Rolls. Of course you have to go see him. If you don't know why, then you have to go see him even more.

Totem Figures, by the increasingly infamous TJ Dawe. The guy talks at top speed for 90 minutes and doesn't forget any lines. Worth seeing just for that, although he seems a little oversold to me. Reputedly the only guy to ever make a full-time career out of doing fringe shows.

Not much to add to these.

Facebook
Ok, fine, I'll join your stupid Facebook. I have an account now. I don't know what I'm supposed to be doing with it, but whatever - I assume this means I'll magically start getting invitations to things now.

More apples
To everyone who said they were coming over for gaming tomorrow: thanks for coming! And I realized I forgot to mention what time to be here. Let's say 7:00.

And if you haven't replied yet, feel free to do so now.

Iron Man
Anybody in Montreal who hasn't seen Iron Man yet? Want to go see it Wednesday or Thursday? (And if so, which?)

The NDP is alive and well
Some people may be shocked to hear it, but Jack Layton is the best party leader in Canada today.

A new blog
Now that I have some actual non-recycled content, I should announce my new technical blog: notcharles.wordpress.com. So far it mostly has stuff culled from my old advogato blog and alumnit.ca, but I'm going to be generating some more content soon. I have something pretty interesting cooking up...

(I chose WordPress because I saw [info]vierge_en_trop playing with the anti-spam features on hers, and I figured that would be a good thing to get set up from the get-go. Come to think of it, that probably deserves a post of its own - but it's too late tonight.)

Gaming tomorrow: update
If anyone decided not to come over for gaming tomorrow because the games I listed sounded too geeky: I just bought Apples to Apples and Save Doctor Lucky, which might have broader appeal.

7:00, post if you need directions. Oh, and I forgot to mention in the last post: RSVP, so I'll know how many to expect.

See you tomorrow!

Gaming Monday
Hey, guess what I forgot to post half a week ago.

Next Monday is boardgaming night at my place (email or leave a comment if you need directions), starting at 7:00. I'm thinking either Betrayal at House on the Hill or Mystery of the Abbey, depending on if we're in the mood for something light and random, or more of a brain buster.

So which would you all prefer?

Windows is amazing
Apparently the problem I'm having could be because .NET 2.0 is in a broken state. To fix it, go to the Add/Remove Programs control panel, locate the item named Microsoft .NET Framework 2.0 and choose to repair it. I have no "repair" option. I have a "Change" option, but when I click on it a progress bar grinds for a while and then nothing happens. Is that broken? I dunno. So I decided to remove it and reinstall it.
Error 1334. The file blah blah blah cannot be installed because it is not found in cabinet file BLAH BLAH BLAH.NDP.
UNINSTALL. UNINSTALL. Not INSTALL, UNINSTALL. You know what else would be great? If I could have cut and pasted that error message.

I speek English gud
This should tell you about what state I'm in at work these days. No technical experience necessary.

...

According to the code, this should never happen.  In fact, the document shouldn't even be processed if it has no prepro features.

...

Comment #2 is badly phrased.  It should say,  "the document shouldn't even be processed if it doesn't have any prepro features."

GAH.  Sometimes I get very confused.  Comment #2 and #4 should say, "the document shouldn't even be processed UNLESS IT HAS PREPRO FEATURES."

Of course comments #2, #4 and #5 all say the same thing, because I can't read.  They're all correct.

Movie Quote continued
Well, it's been a couple of days and voting's tapered off, so here's my movie quotes again, with more details for the ones that still aren't guessed. New quotes in bold. (EDIT: updated with even more quotes, in bold AND italic.)

These are always fun. Take 12 of your favourite movies and list a quote from each one. One guess per person (if it's wrong you can guess again).

The "favourite movie" bit makes it hard to find quotes that are obscure enough to not be obvious sometimes.

1. Vessels underwater have girl names. And boats on top do too.
I'm dyin'... for real this time!
Daddy's gonna stroll down that far subterranean shore, all littered with the flotsam of hopes and dreams. Relics of ancient times. Lonely cenotaphs. (guessed by Jim and [info]feygele)

2. You're a handsome devil. What's your name? (guessed by [info]len)

3. What the hell do you know about surfing? You're from goddamned New Jersey. (guessed by [info]gorbash_dragon)

4. -I love you. -I know. (guessed by [info]swestrup)

5. Well, I'm back. (guessed by [info]mricon)

6. This band of miscreants, this very evening, interfered with a lynch mob in the performance of its duty. (guessed by [info]hellocire)

7. I always thought the joy of reading a book is not knowing what happens next. ([info]gorbash_dragon)

8. I mean, have you ever actually seen your brain?
It's simple... over-specialize, and you breed in weakness. It's slow death.
-Get off your ass and arrest that garbage man! -Yessiree, the excitement never stopes. (guessed by Jim)

9. Sand is overrated. It's just tiny, little rocks. (guessed by [info]callmepavlov)

10. Go to America. They'll swallow any shit there.
Booking agent: I'll need to hear them play. Manager: Is that necessary? (guessed by [info]grimmwire)
(I have to admit, I haven't seen this movie for ages, since I lost my copy years ago, so I can't actually remember any of the dialogue - mostly visuals. This one's a paraphrase, and if nobody guesses it, I don't know what I'll do for an ancore. I guess I should have cheated a bit and not actually used my "favourite" films.)

11. -Sweetnessheart, what watch? -Ten watch. -Such much? -Oh, you will get along beautifully in America. (guessed by [info]jrw)

12. Real sharpness comes without effort.
A faithful heart makes wishes come true. (guessed by [info]hellocire)

Scrabble Meetup!
It's 2008 and time to Scrabble yourself silly with your fellow Montrealers.

But I've never been to Scrabble meetup, you say. Why the devil should I come now, you ask?

Well, let's say, hypothetically, that you made a little resolution or two for 2008. And let's say these resolutions went something to the tune of : be more social, learn new things, improve your French or English, spend less time online, bicker with others about spelling and exactly what constitutes a "word", and generally be a more well rounded person while eating nachos, drinking beer and staring at a rack of seven, lettered tiles. Lucky for you, all these things and much, much more can be accomplished at your local Scrabble Meetup!

This month's meetup will be held at our usual winter spot, Divan Orange (4234 St-Laurent, just north of Rachel), at 3pm Sunday afternoon (January 27th).

October scrabble meetup

Remember, players of all levels are welcome, boards come in both French and English (you can even bring your own). Scrabbling is a perfectly fine way to spend a Sunday afternoon.

Hope to see you there!

Bleah again
You know it's going to be a long day when you wake up early but get to work late, and spend the entire train ride with a headache obsessively humming, "There's a hole in the world like a great black pit..."

You people are just lucky I only own safety razors, is all I'm saying.

Blah
I'm having an introverted day. Not as bad as yesterday, but still not the best mindset for GM ing. I wonder how my players will feel about just playing Wii instead. It would probably help if I got some more games.

Speaking of Wii, I wish this thing would stop trying to guess what capitalisation I want.
