Noelle Gray

For those of you in the swing world that haven't heard this already, Noelle Gray (from CT) was diagnosed with breast cancer recently. Cross posted from yehoodi:

Our friends at the CT Swing Dance Society CTSwing (CSDS) are dedicating their September 8 Swing Dance to Noelle Gray. Noelle who is presently battling breast cancer, has given much to the Swing & Blues Dance Community here and abroad. A New Haven resident, she has taught many Swing and Blues Dance Classes. She has already undergone surgery and endured pain & indignation when her health insurance company forced her home from the hospital prematurely, against the advice of her Doctors. Proceeds from the dance will go to Noelle to help with her recovery expenses.

If you can't make it to the dance, you may send a check payable to CSDS and put "Noëlle Gray" in the memo. Any amount is acceptable and 100% will be donated to Noëlle. Send checks to:

CSDS
c/o Richard Wilber
30 Wilson Drive
Oxford, CT 06478

If you'd like to send something via paypal, here's the address:
csds_payments at ctswing dot org
Note "Noelle Fundraiser" in the payment so they know where it should be going.

If you've met Noelle once, you remember her. She's hilarious and sweet and she's one of us. I've known her on and off for about 7 years and she always makes me smile when I see her. If you can help, please do.

brrraaaiinns...

what a family.

Today was the historic Zombie Kickball II on the Eastern Promenade in Portland Maine. Approximately 50 zombies invaded the picturesque park and proceeded to play a somewhat disorganized game of kickball, complete with a zombie band and some zombie children. A good time was had by all, except the people that got eaten.

On a lighter note (sort of)...

I am trying to raise money to travel to Honduras in January to assist Operation Footprint, an amazing organization that provides the poverty-stricken children of Honduras with no-cost surgeries to repair birth defects such as club foot and cleft palate. These are things that are automatically corrected at birth in richer countries like the US. Left untreated these children can be crippled for life, unable to walk, go to school or find meaningful work. Please read more about this on my website:

wow. pedro.

what a friggin' game last night. and i got to watch it from FIELD BOX 62k. check the shea stadium map if you want to see how awesome that is. last two rows of the first field box, right at 3B. kick ass. pedro was so damn dominant i didn't realize how fast the game was until it ended at 9:30, only 2:20 after it started. the entire stadium was chanting "pedro" for the last 3 INNINGS. people were on their feet for most of the last 2. i haven't been at a mets game with that kind of energy since the mets won the 2000 NL championship. it was AWESOME. (as you can tell by my excessive use of caps) That was my first time seeing Pedro pitch live and man, did i get a good one. there were about 39,000 people there, and 5000 of them bought tickets day of game. he is such a huge draw for the mets. even if we only get 2 good years out of him and end up paying for all four i think it's worth it for the mets to have this kind of atmosphere at the stadium after the past 4 years of crap.

fucking greedy-ass cable companies.

i apologize in advance for the rant, but i am so damn sick of this. because cablevision and time warner cable can't get their shit together over who gets to bathe in the $1000 bills, new york baseball and basketball fans are completely fucked. actually, some are fucked more than others. i happen to be among the supremely fucked. in short, for those of you that aren't aware, because of a financial dispute between cablevision and time warner, cablevision has yanked msg network and fox sports net off of twc's airwaves. these stations carry about 2/3rds of the mets games for the season (the rest being on network tv). they have no idea when, or if, this is going to be resolved. in the meantime, a number of angry sports fans who have *no other option* for cable providers (like me) are switching to satellite to get these channels. even knowing satellite's problems, i would do this in a heartbeat to get my baseball back, but because i live in an apartment building that forbids satellite dishes, i don't have that option either. to add insult to grevious injury, i can't even watch the damn games on mlb.com tv, because they are required to black out your local games, whether they are at home or away.

you may wonder what the big deal is, but here's the thing. i have a lot of hobbies, and a full social life. but i LOVE baseball. i also love hockey, and the players' and owners' greed took that from me this year too. i have had enough. watching a baseball game on tv is half of the reason i have cable, and it's a cheap form of entertainment when i don't feel like going out and spending money in this uber-expensive city i live in. i find it incredibly unfair that millionaire cable execs can't get their shit together and so joe average fan is suffering. oh wait, they're refunding every TWC subscriber $2 a month for the inconvenience! never mind. it's all good.
