The $700 billion rescue plan approved by the U.S. Senate won't fix the core problem with the nation's ailing financial institutions. And it almost guarantees that the Occupants of the Wonderful Land of the Free will have to pony up for an even costlier bailout someday, maybe soon, if the House of Representative passes it tomorrow. Paulson has correctly identified the quandary: Lots of shaky banks and insurance companies are showing strangely high values for assets that aren't worth squat in the market. Many need more capital and can't raise it. And he's right in saying the outlook is grim if we don't get this fixed. What's stunning is how little the taxpayers would get in return for their money under Paulson's package, and how illusory much of the banks' newly minted capital would be. Under the plan, Treasury would buy some companies' troubled assets at above-market values. To boost their capital, Paulson would have to pay the companies more than what their balance sheets say the assets are worth. Then other companies would use the rigged prices to write up, or avoid writing down, the values of similar holdings on their own books. So, the taxpayers get hosed on the asset purchases. Other banks use the trumped-up prices to cook their books. And investor confidence supposedly is restored. That brings us to this question: Why would a smart guy like Hank Paulson -- the former boss of Goldman Sachs -- advance such a dumb, shady plan? Let us count the reasons: No. 1: It delays our national reckoning until after the presidential election. Paulson first floated a bailout Sept. 18, at the very hour when shares of Goldman Sachs Group Inc. and Morgan Stanley looked like they might go into a death spiral. It's not so much a bailout, as it is a timeout. He had to follow up with something, anything, to stop the freefall from resuming. It didn't have to make sense. So it doesn't. The plan is about creating the illusion of stronger financial institutions, not strengthening them. The banks know this. Otherwise, they would have stopped charging each other near-record rates for three-month loans by now. The reason they haven't is because they're still afraid their customers -- other banks -- might go broke. No. 2: The reckoning will be worse than you can imagine. If Paulson were serious about recapitalizing rickety U.S. banks, he would infuse them with hundreds of billions of dollars of fresh government money, in exchange for ownership stakes. And if he wanted to create market liquidity for all those troubled assets on their books, he would be ordering banks to disclose everything there is to know about them, so Mr. Market could figure out their present value. He can't let that happen. Not now. If everyone could see how much the toxic waste is worth, the writedowns would be so huge that many banks would have to be declared insolvent. Better to let the next administration deal with the clean- up. The trouble is, the longer the government waits to address the banks' lack of capital, the worse it gets, barring a miracle. No. 3: He's helping his friends. Is there any doubt? Let's see. As of yesterday, Morgan Stanley Chief Executive John Mackowned 2.75 million shares of his company's stock, valued at about $67 million. If Mack can get Morgan Stanley to trade reams of sketchy paper for billions of dollars of our Treasury's cash, without diluting any of his stake in the company, who benefits? Paulson would have us believe it's you. No. 4: There's an excellent chance the Congress will pass it. Leave someone else to figure out the costs another day.

| a screwed up world. |

| [ | mood |
| | accomplished | ] | The world out there is just as screwed up, free or oppressed, marxist/modernistic or post-modernistic.
Too free and democratic, you have people like Fuld and Paulson walking away with hundreds of millions of dollars; tax free and untouchable. You end up fighting a losing war against what, bad debts and mortgages. 700 billion dollars bailout plan. In addition, news that just got in, the Feds are pumping 630 billion dollars into the money markets because confidence is hit so bad, everyone else who has survived isn't lending money to each other. I haven't added the amount of money the various central banks from England to Japan have pumped into their respective markets to encourage growth. Don't forget; The Free (capitalistic world) created this shit hole all of us are in. Too totalitarian and oppressive, you have people like WKS walking away scot free without answering to the public. You have rich and powerful families keeping themselves rich and powerful by electing their relatives to office (public or corporate) - which brings me to another point: doesn't nepotism exist even in the land of the free? You have screwed up investment deals with huge paper losses and no one held accounted for the botched up deals. Oh and you have DBS employees hard selling high risk investment derivatives as BONDS! bonds can you imagine? Just because Lehman Brothers when alive called it the Mini Bonds series doesn't mean it is a bond you doofed up employees. The best part is, you sell such high risk investment derivatives to retirees, housewives, and generally people who will not understand the disclaimer at the back.
The thing is, as long as DBS fully states the risks and the problems associated with the product, they are no longer liable.
Well, the last I heard, MAS has ordered a thorough investigation. However thorough it may be, I believe not all of the truth will come out into the open. As a friend told me, we may not be able to recover from a blow to the confidence in the banking sector in Singapore. So, 52 million dollars of retail investor's funds conned and cheated by employees who have sales quotas to meet will probably be sandpapered and covered up evenly. After all, it is for the greater good of the country. What is 52 million dollars as compared to the economic health of Singapore?
My advice to all retail investors from now on, if anyone from the banks tries to approach you to make you invest, 2 questions you must tell them:
1. Have you studied the Financial Advisors' Act in the Statutes and the MAS regulations?
This is the first test of whether the supposed scum attending to you is well versed in the conflicts of interests and the legal duties they owe you. If they haven't, demand that you ask to see their manager and make sure that person is fired/sacked. In this case, do not make any leeway, or give in. We cannot have anymore of such people working in the financial sector. Also, write to the MAS and complain. Like I said, go all the way. Bank employees have had too much fun over the last 6 years, in my opinion.
2. I am assuming that you are qualified by MAS - therefore; are you going to do a risk appetite assessment for me?
Assuming they manage to cross the first obstacle; remember this, all these 'relationship managers' have to do a risk appetite test for you. Whether you are risk averse, risk neutral, or a risk taker, the salesperson will have to recommend you the most appropriate product to you. So if you were risk averse and still recommended the DBS High Notes 5, then the 'relationship manager' has not acted in your best interests.
DO NOTE: RECORD ALL CONVERSATIONS. FRAUDULENT MISREPRESENTATION IS THE HARDEST TO PROVE. (I believe most phones these days have a recording function. Get the fella to identify him/herself, IC number before proceeding)
Finally, DO NOT BUY WHAT YOU DO NOT UNDERSTAND. ASK DUMB QUESTIONS IF YOU MUST.
Well. the ongoing saga the last 3 weeks have taught me, never trust anyone with your money - always have your own back up plans in case of a bank run, a stock market crash, a collapse of a financial institution. Hedge your positions well against risks and inflation, and know when to buy what. Get a secondary opinion from a rival bank about the product. Information is never too much.
Never to trust our political masters, whether you are in America, or ZImbabwe or Singapore. Never put your hope in another man.
To those who complain about our government, and how great thy America is, I think I have contrasted the 2 governments earlier. (and in molly's blog as a comment). The world is screwed up everywhere. Quit complaining unless you know what you're talking about.
You all are starting to get on my nerves.

yes so I know you're having a whale of a time in Sapporo. You don't have to make me jealous. I will not be jealous. Unlike you, I don't have that kind of narrow minded-ness. I have had my share of fun, which I am eternally grateful for because I don't deserve it. So really, I don't compare what you have and what I have.
So stop being the devil's advocate. You will not get the better of me.
On another note. the silence is so loud at home it sucks. Neo came over yesterday and kept me company in the afternoon. |

looking at my blog name, I think of the really memorable times I had in Nee Soon, and no, I did not deliberately get high on isoflurane in camp.
and reminded me how some people encouraged me to continue to write even after an unfortunate event. I don't blog as furiously as before already but I really appreciate being talked out of deleting this blog. |

Fantastic. I've never paid so much attention to the Olympics. I am so proud to be Chinese, to be part of mankind, watch records smashed to bits, see the pain and the emotions on winners and losers, to see the burden of entire nations on many a young shoulder as they perform feats of physical strength, agility and speed. Phelps, the 'almost twins' from China performing the synch diving, and lastly my favourite, Usfain Bolt.
I hate the labelling and the name calling, the 'holier than thou' position so many people take against the hosts. Remove the plank in your eye before you attempt to remove the speck in your brother's.
Haven't you heard of the ransacking and burning of the Summer Palace by the Anglo-French? Its equivalent to Hitler bringing down the Eiffel Tower. Read about the Crusades? I would like to compare all of you - Yes, all of you blond, blue eyed, brunettes, red haired, (whatever) to Hitler. All of you are descendants of people as sick, as perverse, as evil as the world labelled him.
You people have a history as dark as ours, so you have no bloody right to criticize our culture, our way of living.
As for those Chinese who follow the beliefs of the West, I only have these words for you.
红毛人的走狗!
yes I just called you a dog, for those jiak gan dangs who forgot their mother tongue.
==
One world, one dream sounds very very passive 'communist-ic'. Not overtly in your face, but slowly. All of us will sing 'One World One Dream' as we march towards a better future under one leader.
The best way to take over the world is doing it without everyone knowing.
===
on a separate note, I have to admit, ERP is working. haha. no, really.

On yet another note, I didn't feel anything when the 3 ladies lifted the silver medals. No bursting of pride and tears of joy. We bought it. In my mind, we only have one medal holder, Tan Howe Liang. So what if he was born in China? My dad watched him train in the alleys of boat quay when he was a kid. Sheer grit, determination and hardwork. He was the product of the early Singapore. No special diet, no special attention paid to him, no Singapore Sports School for him to attend, no trainer. He didnt ask for any money did he? He didnt come over solely to play sports and to earn 250,000 dollars per silver. He did it for his country. Thats national service.
In my opinion, Lee should backpay him 250,000 dollars. Mark my words, these people will leave once they earn enough money. |

[Aug. 12th, 2008|09:12 am] |
and so I was in school yesterday minding my own business when 2 guys from the neighbouring Ngee Ann Poly came about and asked me, 'Are you a Christian?' One was a local, the other a PRC.
my reply was, yes, I attend Trinity Methodist Church. (thinking that they will leave me alone after that)
and then, they decided to sit down and 'encourage me' in my faith. Well, why not. It was a turn off from the start, him approaching me as a non believer. I felt sad; evangelism must be done in a better way, surely. He brought up Christianity not as a religion, but as a personal relationship with God. The usual stuff. I thought I'd teach them a lesson on debating, so that they might be better prepared in case they decide to tackle someone like Roger, Edwin or God forbid, The NinCompWoop himself Ng Cheng Wei.
It seems that they believe in a scripted question and answer, and they tried to predict my answers. -_________-". Anyways, the topic about parents being non believers was inevitably brought up
I asked the local; ' Are your parents Christians? If your parents want you to go through Taoist rites for their funerals, would you?
he said, No they aren't and no, I won't.
Then I asked again, 'Did God not say, Honor thy parents?'
he replied, ' Yes.' in a grudging manner.
I told him; 'It is a personal relationship you have with God, so what ever you do or I do, really its up to whether we are comfortable. You and I do not have the right to judge anyone else's either. I will perform Taoist rites if my dad wants me to, I believe God will understand, taking into consideration our culture and society. When I go up to Him and face Him, I will tell him that, I loved my father. If I were to be punished for such deeds, then so be it. Let our conscience be clear, in whatever we do and I believe it will be fine.
I think I threw him off balance, and he reverted to went on reciting his script. (probably his Plan B)
Personally, I think they are courageous, I probably will never have the courage to speak to any man on the street about God. But, they were all heart and not prepared to face a challenge head on, they probably were expecting people to run away from them instead. God bless their souls.
On another note, I was leaving CW missed calls hoping that he will call me back but that idiot didn't! ZOMG. so damn dense can! What the hell lah. Cheng Wei! urgh. My quick exit strategy failed because of you! |

I watched The Dark Knight last Tuesday.
I won't jump on to the bandwagon praising Heath Ledger and his skills, (not that I don't think he's not talented, he is) but I think any actor who can act, given that kind of script and make up/costume would do a very good job. Plenty of evil actors out there. I think John Malkovich, Edward Norton, Quentin Tarantino, all can do a very good job of scaring the shit out of us.
However, Heath Ledger/the Joker made me laugh (albeit nervously) he frightened me and amazed me at how senselessly violent his character was.
Anyways, I'm planning a trip down the wild side end of this year! Its been a while since I posted photos on this online journal; I will take photos and post them, I promise.
I need to eat good food. I haven't had an appetizing meal in a veryyyyyyy long time. |

I always wanted to have a M3 and a penthouse with a luxurious skyline by the time I'm 26. I don't want to have a worry in the world. I want know no matter what, I'll have money. I'll be able to drink St Julien vintages while I eat my meals. I want to be dressed in Tom Ford and Manolo Blahniks; Dunhill, McQueen and Zegna.
Why do you seek after such worldly riches, my son?
After all that you have obtained, will your life be fulfilled? Will your heart be filled with joy and happiness when you have achieved the wealth to buy such items?
Seek a meaningful life. Serve God. That way you will be richer than any other man you will meet. You will be secure in your standing; knowing at the end of time, He will extend His hand and say, Well done, my good and faithful servant.
Let me seek this wealth, these material possessions, this standing and reputation in the world. And then I will tell you if my heart is empty. |

maybe I shouldn't read other people's blogs.
=\ since I'm so susceptible to mood swings and soooo easily affected by what people say.
I love my friends, especially those in church. But sometimes, things can get quite messy.
sigh.
I'm beginning to doubt my abilities to lead or teach. I have no flair, I have no skill sets. Should I continue to play? Its depressing sometimes. Joel can score and make goals after I left! =|

Its a piece of musical genius not many dare to think of, a collaboration of one of the greatest metal bands and the San Francisco Symphony Orchestra conducted by Micheal Kamen.
Oh the talent of Hetfield and Kamen!
the energies radiating from the speakers were so intense, I felt tired listening to them. Of them all, No leaf clover, Enter the Sandman, and Ecstasy of Gold probably has the most balanced mix of the Orchestra and amplification.
Now I have to go and take a nap while listening to Nouvelle. |
