Who'da Thunkit?
I don't even understand LiveJournal, and now I have one. Well, why? Live and learn. I could never see the point of having both a general-interest weblog AND a LiveJournal, even though some of my favorite people do. But the clue stick descended on my head recently, and this seems like a good solution to a current problem: I'm entered in the 2004 Marine Corps marathon as half of the "Gym Set" team with your Talking Dog, Seth G. Farber Esq. I want a place to put training notes in detail, but don't want "fitness blogging" to overwhelm Unqualified Offerings, my "large main blog." This way I can put multiple fitness entries per week up with just a single weekly pointer from UO. I'll probably also unburden myself of the occasional personal gaming comment and maybe some hardcore, brief comics thoughts.

Anyway, I want to be a good LiveJournal citizen, but I am strictly from out of town, so please be patient with me as a learn the local folkways (e.g. how and why one "friends" people and what it means and other stuff I probably don't even know about yet. I'm on the free account now, though I may upgrade at some point. I'm not even sure if these rich text-option URLs I pasted in have worked, since I don't see anything different after I add them.

And of course, I'll be mucking with the style a lot early on, within the limits free status sets.

UPDATE: Nope. Had to add the Talking Dog link by hand. Let's see if THAT works . . .

UPDATE2: Seems to. But what's the point of all those lovely formatting icons?

UPDATE3: Okay, this is going to take some getting used to. No biggie!

As a long-time reader of Unqualified Offerings, I'd like to welcome you to LiveJournal.

The friends-page is basically an misnamed LJ-specific aggregator. If someone you don't know "friends" you, that means that that someone wants to keep abreast of what you've written; there is no obligation to reciprocate.

Hey, Jim. Looks like interesting reading here. And, of course, best wishes on it.

Hey! Of course, UO was already on LiveJournal (as [info]jimhenleyrss), but it's not the same.

"Friends": on one hand, it means "people whose stuff I want to have displayed in one convenient place as I update, on my "friends" page [or RSS feeds ditto]." On the other, it means "people who I don't mind reading any locked posts I make." (There are apparently moves afoot to split these functions apart.) Some people attach additional baggage to it, and sometimes userinfo pages (the little head next to the name) have more information, but most people you're likely to hang out with take it as the explanations above.

Good luck with the training.

Welcome to Live Journal. I had one before I had the blog and I use them both for different sorts of writing. LJ is more personal; the blog more public.

Pleased to see ya, Jim; Madeline here. LJs are nice because the friends aggregator makes it easy to track what people are up to.

Thanks for the welcome, everyone! I appreciate the explanation of the whole "friends" phenomenon. Now if only I could figure out why the "add link" icon in the compose window does not, in fact, add a link. Itals works.
