Flowering plants. After planting the bamboo I have also planted the mixed wall flowers Nick gave me as seedlings. Quite a few plants are starting to flower:
Sisyrinchium Aunt May (Iris like leaves with a white stripe down grey green leaves) is putting up flower stalks, which will be interesting as I don't know what the flowers look like; I am resisting the urge to find pictures on the internet.
Festuca Glauca - Blue Fescue (Tight compact blue/silver needles) is flowering at the moment, although it just looked like grass seed heads rather than grass seed heads with a dusting of colour.
One of the conifers (Bronze gold compact conifer soft needled) is also flowering, its flowers are very white and dainty, it looks almost like cartoon simplified flowers, they're hard to describe, almost like a simplified rounded daisy. I shall have to get pictures.
That’s all the gardening news at the moment, apart from I am currently tackling the back garden, mowing and de-brambling. Goblin is talking about compost/mulch for the front garden as the soil looks so very very very poor... Too much sand and grit.

Bamboo planted and Front garden weeded. Finally planted the Black bamboo, we opted for planting it without a container due to the fact it would have been very difficult and it means it should establish it's self quicker. I am wondering if when I wake up tomorrow it would have engulfed the house, but never mind, it should be (more than) happy. I have chosen a spot that is in partial shade and has well drained soil.
Once the Bamboo is in and flourishing, I have sea holly and / or teasel seeds to plant around the base. Although as of yet remain unsure. Once money has settled again, I shall buy compost and mulch to revitalize the soil.

Weeding and new arrivals... Finally got around to half weeding the front garden today. Was surprised to see the Zebra Grass - Miscanthus Sinensis making a recovery, which is just as well as it was going to be quite a main focus point. Unfortunately the Curley-Wurley plant is nearly dead and I think that’s due to lack of water, so I must remember to water him regularly. The Astelia Chathamica silver spear is looking very manky, however I think that is due to the snow we had and it being classed as a greenhouse plant. Black bamboo is slowly slowly making a come back after the snow "burn all it's leaves and made me wonder if it was dead... gggrrr.... I have new additions however! Two purple pansy plants and an infestation of poppy plants, with big silver frilly leaves which is perfect for my colour scheme, so I have left a few of them in strategic places. Every one else is doing fine, one of my conifers and heathers are currently flowering and the lavender is getting the type of leaves that means it will be flowering soon. I have also planted 6 tulip bulbs that remind me of big buttercups, the flowers have white middles and small yellow petals, they have yet to show their heads, another reason I am weeding. Once weeded I am hoping to plant the black bamboo in a corner and then sow Thistle seeds around it's base as a contrast, although I am increasingly thinking about silver sea holly... mmmm.... -x- Current Mood: calm |

Watering Watered all the plants in the front garden tonight whilst the mist was out and the streets were silent. All the plants are doing really well. I've been acclimatising a small dwarf red rose goblin bought me after my blood tests. I'm not sure where in the garden, if at all, it shall go but I shall give it some consideration tomorrow. Although we may not be staying I am playing with the idea of buying mulch and blue slate as planned. -x-

Black Bamboo acquired Acquired a 9 foot Black bamboo for £30! It is still in its tub so I am considering planting still in its tub for easy removal and to discourage runners. This now completes my front garden! *Yay* Not sure when we are digging it in but I shall give it a good water and let it get used to the cold before any plans of moving. Current Mood: happy |

Last few plants Today the plants from E-Bay arrived. The Fennel and Curley-wurley plant have been planted outside in the front and the Sorrel is living in the kitchen to provide salad leaves. Looking at the front garden I may have placed the Curley-Wurley plant wrong however I don't want to uproot it before it has had chance to settle.
Mainly I think the front garden is complete, now all I need is the Bamboo/Grass for the back of the garden. I am considering buying that in spring as winter is setting in. Now it shall mainly be watering and weeding of the front garden and occasional mowing of the back lawn.

Back Graden - de-brambled It has taken me the best part of 4hrs to de-bramble and mow/strim the back garden, most of that time was the mowing and strimming. For the first time in 9+months it is free of brambles and completely mowed. Now I need to keep it this way.
The front garden has been watered and other the past two nights mostly de-grassed by hand... I think I will complete the de-grassing and the spray a light weed killer mix upon the soil. Hopefully this shall not kill the recently planted plants.

Placing the finishing plants, just bamboo to complete... Today I visited Homebase and bought two more plants, I think this will finish the collection apart from the bamboo/plant at the back of the garden.
Having placed the two new plants (Astelia Chathamica silver spear and Sisyrinchium Aunt May) where they seemed to go I then arranged the selection of plants yet to be planted (Tall variegated striped gold and green grass, Thin whispy grass with tufty flower heads, Thick (almost palm like) leaves one column <<<<, Scolopendrium Vulgare - Horse fern) the two new plants set of the others nicely. I think the silver and greys completed the selection of mainly green (unplanted) plants.
The front garden looks almost completed. I weeded about a third of the area free of grass, this shall be completed at the weekend, along with help from Ozzy I presume.
This weekend the back garden shall be de-brambled and mown. I hope the compost heap has degraded by then as it is still fairly full. The next stage of the front garden shall be looking after the plants through winter and weeding the area for presentation.

Planting, Nick and I starting on the garden... Today we stocked up on supplies and starter plants (in the sense of start of the Garden rather than beginner plants) There is quite a task in front of us (Myself and my Gardening friend Nick) The front garden is only a small strip of land however it ha been left to weeds and grass for 7mths+ The idea was to create a modern and stylized garden using blue/silver grasses, lime grasses and slate chipping. However since visiting the Garden Center is has become apparent that there is a distinct lack of big sweeping grasses in the chosen colours (silver and gold) at this time of year. Once we were at the Garden Centers plant choices where made by colours, impulse and Nicks advice. Two+ hours later between Nick and I we pulled, ripped and forked most of the weeds/poppies/grasses/vines out of the plot of land. Next was the forking in shifts populated by cold drinks of orange juice and the occasional cup of tea. I spent a good half hour taking rocks, pebbles and stones out the majority of the garden whilst Nick carried on with the forking. Once the ground was broken up about a spades depth we then sprinkled two bags of well-rotted manure and forked it into the first inches of the ground. Next the planting of the plants whilst helped by Ozzy (the neighbors kitten-cat) as we are still trying to proceed with the plan of silver and gold the plants were placed to contrast again each other leaf wise as well as colour. The new plants where then watered and the 6 bin bags full of plant-rubbish were garaged. The plan is to buy more grasses (gold and silver) and to keep the plants alive and healthy over winter when I can then finish the planting and cover the bare soil surface with a mulch and slate chippings. I need to think about which plant(s) I can use at the back of the garden as they need to be big, in the style of grasses/long leaved plants, not mind dry soil and a lot of shade and wind… -x- Current Mood: exhausted |
