OK, so I was trying to figure out how to make that awesome sweater, and New Zealand!Sarah ( sarahdotcom) posted a blanket pattern using the same type of stitch. Well, I wasn't sure how to translate it from "Blanket" to "Sweater Pieces," so I decided to jump in, feet first, eyes closed (well, eyes on the pattern, but whatev.), and BINGO I got a square...well, that's all well & good for the back, but what about the fronts, which are rectangles? After looking at my square for a while, I realized the answer: instead of casting on x (marker) x, I would cast on height (marker) width, and see where that took me. Where did it take me? TO A PERFECT RECTANGLE THANKYOUVERYMUCHI'LLBEHEREALLWEEK. Soooo, now I just have to wait for money to come in (i.e. next month), and wait until I finish stalkermagnet's son's pants (if the www.littleturtleknits.com yarn ever gets here, grrrrrr) before I can start that. BUT, berniesmommy, if you want one, I'm serious: just send me the yarn & I'll do it up, under the condition that I get to keep whatever yarn is leftover. |

maybe...
I think that this sweater:
is constructed from pieces like this:
the arrows indicate direction of knitting, and the triangular pieces on the back create the horizontal pieces on the front. Though there is no back view of this sweater, using these schematics, the back would be horizontally-striped which, from the small portion of the back we can see under the collar, it looks as though it is. The description on the website from which this design comes says it is a garter stitch sweater, meaning knit every row, so it would go REALLY fast. I'm considering ordering some "Shine" from www.knitpicks.com, in "Apricot," "Grass," "Butter," Turquoise," and "Sky." At $2.29 per (machine-washable) ball, and 6 sts/in., if I were to make this in a 9-12 month size (since "Shine" is mostly cotton, it would be a light cardigan, probably not suitable for winter, so 9-12 months puts us August-November unless the baby grows unusually quickly or slowly), The Knitter's Handy Guide to Sweater Patterns says I'd need 600 yards or so (well, it doesn't have schematics for a sweater that small - the smallest it goes is 23", which is about a size 4T, and for that size at this gauge I'd need 690 yards). Each ball of "Shine" is 110 yards, and the sweater only uses little bits of "Grass," so I could order one of that, 2 of each of the rest, and use whatever's leftover to make matching socks and/or a hat :D I love when it all comes together :D

I want to make this for Andy and every other baby I know of. Unfortunately, it only comes in a kit, and I don't necessarily want to use the yarn prescribed by the pattern...I wonder if I could figure out how to do it...
edit: I found this sweater, which is raglan-sleved & knit in one piece, but still doesn't solve the issue of getting the stripes the way they are in the other sweater...

So, I found this free pattern for a diaper cover, but not having a kid to try it on, I didn't know how good it was. So I posed over in clothdiapering (well, I posted there as jennnk), asking if people would be willing to be guinea pigs. I got an unbelievable number of responses and encouragement from those gals.
So, the first one is going to stalkermagnet and her son. Shown here on my willing model, who hasn't let me remove Baby G's Shining Star hat...just as well, I suppose, since I'd lose it anyway :-p

| » *blows dust off the ol' knitblog* |
Well, it's been almost a month since I last updated this thing, and that was just for a little quiz thingy. Any real substance has been on hold for far too long. And since one of my resolutions was to write more (and another was to knit more), here I am.
I have a few confessions to make...
- I haven't finished Christmas knitting yet.
- I don't like Latvian mittens.
- There's a project I haven't discussed here that should have been finished long ago, but wasn't, because I'm feeling animosity toward its receipient.
Let's take these one at a time, shall we?
- Christmas knitting...well, since we didn't GO anywhere for Christmas, Gloria's hat needs to be finished (a few more decrease rows & it'll be done), George's scarf needs a few more feet (he said it was okay if it was a little late, and I want to get it done by the end of next week), Addie's present needs the ends to be woven in (she was out of town, so I didn't worry about it), Darlene's tam looks more like a Hershey's kiss, so I'm going to use a different pattern, and Sarah's mittens are the victim of Second Mitten Syndrome.
- I know, the Yarn Harlot is THE voice of the knitblog world. Her braids are gorgeous, her motifs nearly perfect. The pointed tops, however, have got to go. I can't wrap my mind around the concept of pointy mittens. It's just not right, somehow.
- I started a project for a friend. A gorgeous project. A project that (finally) used the Debbie Bliss Merino Aran I got on clearance at Hilltop all those months ago when George and I visited Seattle. A project that sits in the WIP box 50% done. Unfortunately, this friend and I haven't spoken in a while, because we had a little falling out/misunderstanding/I can't respect some of the choices she's made in her life (and that's saying a lot, since I will stand by my friends through 99.999% of the choices they make, both
bad and good healthy and unhealthy). I don't know if I should just rip out the project, redo it in crappy acrylic (since she really won't know the difference), and save the good yarn for me someone who deserves it, or just bite the proverbial bullet, finish the project, mail it to her (since I doubt I'll ever go over to her house again), and let that be the last of it. I don't want bad knitting goddess karma for giving someone acrylic when they're not allergic to wool, but at the same time, this stuff was expensive, and I don't know if she'll fully appreciate it.

so the "100 things about me" meme is floating around the knit blogs, and i figured i'd get one done to post over there, but post it here, too...
( i am not PC. i am a bad feminist. i talk about sex. i talk about yarn. consider yourself warned. ) *wipes brow*
wow, that wasn't as hard as i thought it would be. and to think, i have more to say. yeah, i should make 2 versions, lol. nah. although, if y'all (you'se guys) have any questions, feel free to ask :)

| » ah, the wonders of st. vincent de paul's |
ok, so here in eugene, the st. vincent de paul's on division (just past fred meyer's & office max) has a craft department. now, this craft department isn't big, and it's of course all the stuff people give away whenever, but it's YARN and FABRIC and PAINT and all KINDS of artsy craftsy stuff! everything's separated by category & color, so the pink fabrics are next to the red fabrics, which are next to the orange fabrics & so on down the line. a lot of the yarn doesn't have labels, but some of it that DOES have labels is 100% wool! i found a really great deal today: ( kind of image heavy, but worth it for yarn-oglers )

You are interchangeable. Fun, free, and into everything, you've got every eventuality covered and every opportunity just has to be taken. Every fiber is wonderful, and every day is a new beginning. You are good at so many things, it's amazing, but you can easily lose your place and forget to show up. They have row counters for people like you! What kind of knitting needles are you? brought to you by Quizilla
You appear to be a Knitting Guru. You love knitting and do it all the time. While finishing a piece is the plan, you still love the process, and can't imagine a day going by without giving some time to your yarn. Packing for vacation involves leaving ample space for the stash and supplies. It can be hard to tell where the yarn ends and you begin. What Kind of Knitter Are You? brought to you by Quizilla
ok, is it weird that i want the yarn shown in the interchangable yarn picture? it looks like wool & it looks so fun to work with, even though i really don't like variegated yarn all that much at all.

| » the gaylynn hat is finished, in a different form |
when i was in seattle, george and i stopped at hilltop yarn and needlepoint, on beautiful queen anne boulevard/street/avenue.
among the yarn i bought (not enough, but we're broke and it went on my credit card as it was) were two balls of beautiful italian merino in a gorgeous raspberry color.

i bought this because the yarn i bought for gaylynn's hat was wimpy no matter how many times i started & frogged it, so i went into hilltop & asked the very nice, very helpful, very german woman working there for hat yarn recommendations. my criteria? soft, warm, and bright pink. she showed me every soft pink yarn in the store, and this was, by far, the softest and warmest one. i lost the ball bands (or the cats stole them, whatever), but it was black, and the yarn is from italy, and cost way more than any yarn i'd ever use to make anything for myself, but the look on gaylynn's face when i gave her this:

was classic, grateful, and overjoyed. she loves it.
the hat is my own design, knit in the round on size 6 16" bamboo circulars, basically a repeat of *K6, P3, K3, P3, K3, P3* 6 times (126 sts.), crossing the cable on the K6 on rounds divisible by 6 (6, 12, 18, etc.) when it came 3/4 down my ear, i ended with a multiple of 6 round, and started decreasing...round one: *K2tog 3 times, P3, K2tog, K1, P3, K2tog, K1, P3* 6 times (96 sts.); round 2: *K2 tog, K1, P2 tog, P1, K2tog, P2 tog, P1, K2tog, P2 tog, P1* 6 times (60 sts.); round 3: *K2 tog, P2tog, K1, P2tog, K1, P2tog* 6 times (36 sts.); round four: K2tog all the way around (18 sts.); round 5: K2tog all the way around (9 sts.); round six: cut yarn and draw through live stitches twice. weave in ends. gauge: 6 sts. per inch. 126 sts. at 6 sts/in makes the hat 21 inches, but the cables pull it in a little. my head is 20.5 inches and it fits me perfectly. it also stretches a bit because of the rib, so i'd say it would fit heads 20-21.5 inches around. please don't steal the pattern. use it, yes. steal it, no.
this took 1 1/2 balls of the gorgeous italian merino (78m each), and if i'd known i'd have as much left over as i did, i would have put braided cables in it, too. next time, i guess.

» a_wags is the best! |
a_wags/addie gave me some awesome yarn, in exchange for a press release i wrote for her company, and she has more for me in a box that she couldn't find in the dark, so when we get together for saturday market/farmer's market (are you still up for that, babe? i'll call your parent's # in the morning, ok?), i'll get the rest. in the bag she gave me tonight was some lamb's pride bulky (4 sts/in. on size 8 needles...i swatched tonight!) that i've been dying to try, but didn't have any money for, so i'm really excited about it! you're awesome, addie!

| » holy crap, i updated! |
ok, so i know it's been a while, and i keep saying to myself "i should blog that," and i never do.
well, here i am, folks, back with an entry sure to blow your mind...or something...
where were we last time? oh yes, i know...
1. the seattle sweater vest...isn't. i decided to make it a short-sleeved raglan sweater instead, finished the second sleeve the night before the tryouts, and i knew i wouldn't get the front done in time, so it's sitting in the WIP pile, waiting for inspiration...i might tear out the sleeves & make them long, so i can wear it before april, but we'll see how it goes.
2. sarah's mittens...aren't...yet. i haven't worked on them, sorry sarah, but they're a christmas gift, so i have some time. they will get done, te prometo.
3. the gaylynn hat...is. sort of. i went to seattle and bought yarn at hilltop yarn (more about that later, with pictures, even), and got this GORGEOUS raspberry mohair that was like BUDDA to knit (seriously, i didn't want to stop!), and i'll be giving the original yarn to a_wags addie whenever she makes it up to eugene.
4. 2 more hats are done. i like this K2P2 rib on size 8 circulars concept...a hat takes about 3-5 hours, depending on the complexity, which means i can get one done in 2-4 days, which is nice for my crafting ADD
5. the baby berry gift is a WIP. i worked more it yesterday, after setting it aside for a while. i like it. something mindless (acrylic worked in stockinette on straight needles...nothing more mindless than that, IMHO).
ok, so i was gonna give you pictures, but i have to get ready for work...yes, i know, work, ugh, but i must go so i can get paid so i can buy more yarn, muahahahaha!
until next time, kiddos,
<3, jen.
