5:21 pm - World, stop pissing me off today...
Seriously....

Muslims want to advertise on the NY Subway, Angers Representative and NY Post. Really. All Muslims are terrorists? Get over yourself. That's like telling me I worship satan. *rolls eyes* so annoyed. There are so many things WRONG with telling the MTC not to run the campaign that I can't even get into. I don't pitch a fit about the gigantic church signs that basically tells me to be "saved" or go to a hell I don't believe in. They want to teach people the TRUTH about Islam, which I think is a good thing. There are too many rumors and ignorant statements about Islam out there that convolute the actual religion. Yes, there are extremists, but there are extremist Christians who kill people for their religion too. More death and war has occurred in the name of the Christian God than any other God in history. Hello? CRUSADES! Witch burning. Slavery was even justified with the bible. America was attacked by Muslim EXTREMISTS, not mainstream followers Islam.

However, we live in a Judeo-Christian society where the "extremists" in other religions make the whole. Forgot about that.

I think everyone needs a class (or two or three) on the actuality of world religions. I think it should be mandatory in high schools. Not to convert one way or another, but tell the actual TRUTH about what these religions are and aren't.

*ugh*

7:34 am - Michael Savage strikes again...
Uncompassionate conservative Michael Savage has struck again folks. This time he's being a dick to the disabled, particularly children with autism.

Savage calls autistic children "brats" and accuses their parents of welfare fraud.

Basically, during his radio broadcast, Savage calls autism fake. He declares that children with autism are "brats" whose parents don't discipline them enough. He states that autism is made up so that people can milk the welfare system and get "extra help in school".

Savage was pulled from MSNBC broadcasts a while back after telling a gay caller he hoped he "dies of AIDS". He was boycotted by sponsers after saying Muslim people could "shove their religion up their behinds" because he's sick of hearing it.

Isn't enough enough? Seriously. The man thrives off being a dick at the expense of the helpless and the minority. And, in all honestly, he's giving conservatives a bad name, and that's pretty hard to do these days with George Bush in office. This man doesn't need to pollute our radio waves with hate and stupidity.

Protests are happening in Manhattan (or did happen I'm not sure) and MediaMatters.org is collecting names for a petition against him.

I'm so beyond disgusted...

6:53 pm - Meme's cure boredom...
Tagged by [info]wookiemonster

A) People who have been tagged must write their answers on their blogs and replace any question that they dislike with a new question formulated by themselves.

B) Tag eight people to do this quiz and those who are tagged cannot refuse**. These people must state who they were tagged by and cannot tag the person whom they were tagged by. Continue this game by sending it to other people.

**Well, really they can but that's less fun. ;-)

1. What are your reasons for having a LJ?
This one? Political ranting and keeping up on my slew of communities. My other one? Boredom, ranting, venting, keeping up with friends, feeling like someone gives a damn...

2. What do you do before bedtime?
Stumble into bed (because i'm tripping over my stuff, not because I'm tired). Or if I'm at work, setting the alarm and reading.

3. What will your dream wedding be like?
In October 2011 and we'll have karaoke. That's as far as we've planned. ;-)

4. Chocolate: dark, light, milk, white, flavored?
milk. Or chocolate with caramel center. Mmm....

5. Where do you want to go on vacation next year?
Four Quarters. :-)

6. Which is more blessed, loving someone or being loved by someone?
Yes.

7. Do you trust easily?
Yes and no. I put too much trust in people being decent human beings until they prove otherwise, but at the same time don't trust people with my feelings for a while.

8. If you could buy yourself any ONE thing what would it be?
A house. Definitely. With a backyard. With a big-ass privacy fence that a dog can't jump over. And a garden.

9. Is there anything that has made you unhappy these days?
Having time to be honest with myself. People being selfish.

10. What is your best quality?
I'm empathetic and good with the English language (until you piss me off, then I speak out of my ass a lot). I'm also kind of a bitch if it has to come down to it, which I see as a good thing. And I can take a punch and being thrown on the mat relatively well. I guess I'm kinda tough.

11. Is being tagged fun?
Sometimes when I'm bored...

12. How do you see yourself?
Depends on the day. Most of the time, not so great. But I have my moments...

13. Who are currently the most important people to you?
Michael, my mother, my little sister, my grandmother, my dad, and my friends who better know who they are. My nephew will be up there with my sister when he's born.

14. What kind of person do you think the person who tagged you is?
He's a very sweet guy who can be too hard on himself sometimes.

15. Would you rather be single and rich or married but poor?
Married and poor. WAIT! That'll be my life. We'll have fun though, that's the important part. ;-)

16. How many children do you want to have, if any?
1-2. If I'm blessed with 1 I'll be happy. I have been thinking about adopting a child since I was old enough to understand, truly understand, how broken the foster care system is. But I will probably have at least one if I'm able.

17. What's better, to give or to receive?
I give a lot, but both make you feel good. :-)

18. What is your dream career?
Social work. Oh wait... I do that. lol. But for serious, advocacy social work. Legal advocacy probably.

19. What would you do if you became pregnant unexpectedly?
Right this second? Cry. Hysterically. Then tell Michael. Then figure out if I can work grad school around giving birth or if I need to take a break. Then continue crying.

20. What were your parents going to name you if you'd been born the opposite sex?
Honestly? I have no idea. I'm sure my name would have had one of my grandfathers' names in there somewhere and maybe my dad's. (My brother's middle name is Ronald (my dad's name) and my dad's middle name is Henry (grandpa's name). It's a trend.)

Now, to tag 8 people...

11:43 am - Separation of Church and State?
http://www.cnn.com/2008/US/07/07/sclicense.plates/index.html?iref=mpstoryview

South Carolina is considering allowing people to get license plates with a big yellow Christian cross in front of a stained glass church window with the words "I Believe" very large underneath. I, personally, have no problem with this. I think that people who are Christian and like to proclaim it LOUDLY for everyone in the nearby 20 miles to hear have the right to do so. What BOTHERS me is the fact that the same accommodations aren't going to be made for other faiths or people who are agnostic/atheistic.

"While individuals can ask the DMV to print plates for other faiths -- for a $4,000 fee -- the request would be subject to significant limits and rules not imposed for the Christian plate. Other tags could feature a religious symbol -- such as the Star of David -- but no words would be allowed." (CNN)

In short, the state of South Carolina is favouring the freedom of speech of Christian people over the freedom of speech of non-Christian people. That's not right.

"Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof" (First Amendment, US Constitution)

I think the part is "prohibiting the free exercise thereof". While not specifically saying "no, you non-Christians can't make license plates of your faith but Christians can", they are in effect prohibiting the non-Christian communities by making it more difficult to do so and limiting the extent of that expression.

Basically, they are unable to make the same accommodations for people of non-Christian faiths (such as myself) or of people who have no religious belief (agnostic/atheists). Really, if you can't do it for EVERYONE you're basically choosing one religion to favour over another, which is in violation of the US Constitution. And if you can't do it all, don't do any and just leave it at that. Individuals will find other ways to express their belief, and they are more than welcome to do so, in my opinion. I express mine all the time (though I don't go around trying to "convert" people to Paganism...but that's another rant). I just don't think that a state government body, should be expressing favouritism towards one faith or another, regardless of how many elected officials from that state are in favour with it. Even elected officials need to separate church and work, which in their case is church and state.

11:07 pm - pagan quiz ganked from Morriganswitch

What kind of Pagan are you?
created with QuizFarm.com
You scored as Ecclectic Pagan

A veritable blend of all the pantheons and perhaps a dash of a few other religions as well, you're the versitile Ecclectic Pagan. You have no problem wearing an ankh while setting an offering to Herne on your alter just below your image of Hera. You don't believe in coloring within the lines, and are a bright free-thinker. While you respect the views of your fellow pagans, as far as you're concerned, religion is the sky, and there's no one about to clip your wings with lines and limitations.

3:44 pm - Senator Kennedy
Sen. Kennedy diagnosed with malignant brain tumor.

Sen. Kennedy had a seizure earlier this week and was just diagnosed with a brain tumor. Kennedy is such a powerful force in the Senate and has worked incredibly hard during his terms. This man has been in office since November of 1962 and been one of the most effective lawmakers in the US Senate. He's done some wonderful things for this country and is someone whose work I respect a great deal. He's one of the last real life hardcore advocates left in the Senate and I hope that younger Senators (and a few older ones...) have learned by his example and step up. He's a role model for me at least. My thoughts and prayers go out to him and I hope that his treatments go well.

7:41 pm - Women can't drive race cars!!
Danica wins her first race

I am not a car racing fan, but I've heard of Danica in the past. This article is simply INFURIATING. Saying that her winning was not a result of her skills as a driver, but on a technicality. The writer admits she "executed the team's plan perfectly" yet basically states she didn't really win, at one point stating the win could be an "anomoly". Danica is the first woman in history to win an Indy race but apparently she doesn't deserve it. But my "favorite" line comes towards the end of the article...

"To her credit, Patrick remains a model for young women everywhere. It may be a model of how persistence, a pretty face and the willingness to take the heat can pay off in the end."

because CLEARLY her pretty face has EVERYTHING to do with her ability to drive a car.

Ridiculous bullshit.

A woman can never be successful in indycar racing, obviously. she should have just stayed home in the kitchen. *headdesk*

8:21 pm - Happy Birthday Roe v. Wade
Today is the 35th anniversary of the Roe vs. Wade decision. We continue to stand on the unstable brink of the end of choice for women as we know it.

I am pro choice because regardless of what you choose, I believe in your right to make that decision. I believe that every child should be a wanted child. I believe women have the right to health choices made between themselves and their doctors. And I will defend my right to make that choice. I will defend my body against unjust laws. I will defend my fellow woman's choice. And if you take this choice from us, prepare to fight because there are millions men, women, and everyone in between that are willing to fight you to defend this right.

Don't push
We will push back.

No apologies.

6:08 pm - Unethical behavior at work
Yes I posted this in both my journals and on some communities because well...I'm pissed and want support.

For those of you who don't know, I work at a methadone clinic as a counselor. My unit serves women who are either mothers of young children with high case management needs or who are pregnant (or, oftentimes, both).

cut for length, language, abortion and sexual assault )

I'm so pissed off I could scream. Thankfully, i wasn't there because I probably would have completely overshot CM's conversation and gone off on S, probably getting fired. However, I heard about it through CM asking me my opinion on the matter and am, at this time, unable to take it further. However, I told CM I have no probably having the conversation with her and S if she needs support, though I doubt she will. She's a remarkably strong, outspoken woman. Tomorrow CM is bringing up her uncomfortableness with the conversation to S and I suggested she take it up the chain of command. I'm just so pissed though, because M is not just CM's client, she's MY client too. Grrr...

9:49 pm - For those who are becoming tired...
Sometimes those of us who work towards social justice often feel as though things are never going to change. And they probably won't be completely solved in our lifetimes. But imagine how things have changed since 1905. My great-grandmother lived from 1905-2003. Ok, so she had an exceptionally long life but saw significant change. And no, my voice probably won't change the world. But it's one more drop in the bucket and eventually, enough drops will make it overflow.

10:10 pm - In the news...
Just what the Pagan community/Wiccan community needed...more bad press.

"Wiccans" accused of throwing animal entrails onto people's doorsteps.

I really don't know what pisses me off more...that this is going to hurt the image of Pagans in general or that these people are calling themselves Wiccan at all. Whether you found the animal dead or not, this is disgraceful. Grow up.

------------Meanwhile------------

More women purchase the Morning After Pill as access eases. Imagine THAT? Funny thing about the opposing argument ("it will promote promiscuity and lead to more STDS") is that they say that about comprehensive sex-ed. And, as it turns out...they're wrong. Very wrong actually. The more educated kids are about sex and the longer they go without it. And when they have it, the rate of STD transmission and unplanned teen pregnancy drops dramatically because they actually know how to protect themselves. Wow...

5:18 pm - Confronting Pro-Lifers about abortion
In this video Pro-Life Activists are confronted about the illegalization of abortion (ganked off of [info]saucypunk's journal). However, not only are they asked "should abortion be illegal" but they are also asked about what should happen to women who get abortions. Surprisingly, few have answers and the few with answers have answers that don't make sense, like make it illegal but have no punishment.

Notable Quotable: "Are there any other crimes that have no punishment?"

The only saving grace: A woman who is consistant in her beliefs. She believes abortions are the killing of human beings, and that is inherantly wrong. However, she also believes the death penalty is wrong for the same reason. Horray for consistancy, something which is almost non-existant these days.

Illustrating the benefits of thinking for yourself.

Also, among the hypocrisy, is this article on pro-life women having abortions which was posted by [info]saucypunk's friend [info]sinboy.

You don't want an abortion? Don't have one, you have that choice. But let me have the ability to make that choice for myself.

10:43 pm - For my Wiccan/Wiccan knowledgable friends
Yes, I specified WICCAN for a reason this time:

Hey. Random cry for help. I need an idiots guide to Wicca website I can print shit from for someone at work.

Long story short: I work at a drug and alcohol rehab/methadone clinic. I work with pregnant women and women with young children. A few months ago now a client passed away (combo of asthma medications, cold medications, and being in general poor health from years of drug use and other health issues). She was Wiccan (the only one on the unit) and now another client has been fielding a lot of questions from ignorant clients. This other client is genuinely interested in Wicca anyway and doesn't want to give bad info since most of the questions have been "wait, isn't that like...devil worship?" and she doesn't want to do any more harm than society's already done. Said client saw that I have an article hanging on my office wall about Wiccan soldiers FINALLY getting the pentacle on armed service tombstones, asked if I was Wiccan (got the "no but I'm eclectic pagan, which is kinda close) and wanted to know if I could bring her info on Wicca to read so she doesn't have to bombard me with questions all the time (she so sweet so I don't mind).

I have a lot of BOOKS on Wicca but few websites and lending out books usually means giving out books at my work. heh. any suggestions? :-)
