So, there's only 8 more days to submit comments on the regulation that will allow providers to withhold critical health care information. After that it goes into effect. [info]naamah_darling is far more articulate than I - she goes into great detail in several posts here.

The conventions of a number of the States having at the time of their adopting the Constitution, expressed a desire, in order to prevent misconstruction or abuse of its powers, that further declaratory and restrictive clauses should be added.


The Bill of Rights:



Amendment I

Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof; or abridging the freedom of speech, or of the press; or the right of the people peaceably to assemble, and to petition the Government for a redress of grievances.

Amendment II

A well regulated Militia, being necessary to the security of a free State, the right of the people to keep and bear Arms, shall not be infringed.

Amendment III

Amendment VI

Amendment VII

In Suits at common law, where the value in controversy shall exceed twenty dollars, the right of trial by jury shall be preserved, and no fact tried by a jury, shall be otherwise re-examined in any Court of the United States, than according to the rules of the common law.

Amendment VIII

Excessive bail shall not be required, nor excessive fines imposed, nor cruel and unusual punishments inflicted.

Amendment IX

The enumeration in the Constitution, of certain rights, shall not be construed to deny or disparage others retained by the people.

Amendment X

The powers not delegated to the United States by the Constitution, nor prohibited by it to the States, are reserved to the States respectively, or to the people.

OK first off, it's raining. This means people in Austin drive worse than usual.

Next, it's Friday, so Simon (the ACC "cafe") is closed, so I can't buy a banana or a bagel.

Fine, I try to buy a bottled Dr. Pepper from the machine - it sounds like it vends, but nothing in the box, and I can't reach it to wiggle it out.

FINE, I'll get a can instead. This works, but it means I can't save it for after class if I don't finish it.

Now I don't have enough quarters to buy a Twix bar - no problem, I've got lots of dimes and nickles.

The bloody machine won't take nickles - keeps spitting them out.

FINE!

Grr.

Oh, and I'm taking my first math test today. Whee.

Wow.

I just finished the most amazing book - Cloud Atlas, by David Mitchell. I found this book when I asked a guy at BookPeople for a dystopia, and I can't recommend it enough.

It's a nested set of matryoshka dolls in front of a mirror; six separate stories woven together from the 1850s to a post-apocalyptic future and back again. Each could stand on its own, yet when taken together are glorious.

Here's some thoughts I had while reading it:

About 10 pages in: Hmm. This doesn't seem much like a dystopia. Oh well, it's ok so far.

About 40 pages: WTF?

Another 40 pages: WTF???

Later: Wow, this is good! Hey! Wait! I needed more about that guy, you can't just leave it hanging...

Still later: Holycrap this is good, but if all these threads don't wrap up some how I'm gonna be pissed!

End: Wow. What a rush.


Can't really say much about the stories, because really, you just have to see for yourself. Anything I could say would be a spoiler, so I won't go there. This is one trip worth taking.

I got to school on Monday and found out that my History teacher died over spring break. She'd had some upper respiratory crud going on the week prior, and apparently it turned into pneumonia and it killed her.

The disturbing part, besides someone I know however superficially dying without warning, is that she was just 42.

For those of you keeping score, I'm 41. I also, if I get sick, tend to get a horrendous cough that hangs on for weeks.

So yeah, it's a little disconcerting.

Tuesday I went to the zoo again. We get a membership every year, because we want to support their rescue efforts, but we don't really go very often. I got some pretty cool pictures this time - it was a nice, breezy morning.

School is going pretty well. I seem to be getting A's on all my English essays, though I'm not sure exactly how. History is going well too. I dropped Spanish II though; I felt like I didn't retain anything from Spanish I! So, I'll take another run at it... later. Meanwhile, I really like being back at school.


I'm not, however, doing so well with Project 365 - I've missed several days. For instance, I still need to take some pictures today. :/ Darned clouds in Austin - no eclipse for me! But, I like the "picture every day" concept, so I'll keep plugging away.

That's it for now. I have to remember how to blog again.

W00T! My new Canon PowerShot SD1000 can take much better videos than the old HP PhotoSmart ever thought of taking. I finally managed to get a good video (as opposed to a lame, stupid video) and figured I'd better figure out YouTube

OK, I'm out. From now on my sporadic blatherings will be on my Wordpress 'blog, and will be crossposted to my InsaneJournal. For those who would prefer to read on their LJ friends list rather than on a separate page, I've made LJ feeds for both my 'blog, and my InsaneJournal. [Edit: Don't bother with the IJ feed; it doesn't work right. I'm fairly sure it's on IJ's end.] Just click the appropriate link to add it to your friends list. Theoretically, they should be identical. Theoretically. I'm not sure how often (or how well) LJ updates syndicated feeds. You can always get the direct feed from the site.

I'll still be reading y'all, of course! :)

Last Thursday, Rob and I had the fantastic opportunity to go to Bracken Bat Cave and watch around 20 million bats emerge from their cave to go hunting. Of course, we didn’t see that many bats - we were told it takes almost all night for the entire colony to emerge.

It was incredible. As we walked up to the area above the cave, we first noticed the stench of bat (and, apparently, beetle) guano. It wasn’t too bad, but fairly powerful. After the initial blast it wasn’t very noticeable.

The cave (picture below, also more pictures on my flickr photoset) was really just this huge hole in the ground. Once things started hopping with the bats you could see thousands of them circling the cave mouth in some instinctive holding pattern.

Then they just came spiraling out of the cave, thousands and thousands of them. The vortex of bats created a breeze as it rose from the cave - they were so close you could hear their wings whirring. As more and more of them came out, they began to stream south in this endless river in the sky.

It was absolutely an amazing sight.

Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix was great! And speaking of Harry Potter, since there’s some spoiler hints even on CNN, it’s time for me to pull the plug.

From /. - “Salon reports that Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows has been leaked four days before it hits bookstores. It turns out that someone with access to the American edition of the book has taken a photograph of every one of the pages and made them available via bittorrent. Publishers may well be quaking in their boots, but in some places the quality is barely legible. On many pages the pirateer’s hands are in the pictures with other pages needing a bit of Photoshopping just to make out the words. It appears many of the sites have been removing the content, naturally enough.”

Warning - the /. link is almost certainly infested with spoilers in the comments, and I don’t know how deep the Salon article goes into it - I’m not reading it.

Yeah, yeah, yeah - we know there’s going to be death galore. Fine, but I don’t need to know details and page numbers, thanks.

Transformers is a totally awesome move. If you've got a theater like Alamo Drafthouse, you've got to go see it. Heck, even if you're stuck with an inferior theater, go see it.

Was it true to the comic and/or cartoon? Hellifiknow. But it was very good.

Tuesday we're going to the Harry Potter feast, then Thursday we're going to see some bats!

I do not understand the weirdness of my network connection. We've got two networks; the main one uses a linksys wireless router, hands out ip addresses, and is connected to the cable modem. It uses WPA encryption. The other uses a motorola wireless router, uses WEP encryption (gots to let the DS go online, you know!) and is connected to the linksys. This works perfectly! Computers plugged directly into either router have all the 'net they want. Both DS handhelds connect fine, although I can't be very far away from the router. This is odd, but I live with it for now. Both wireless laptops connect fine to either network from most areas in the house. No problem at all.

If I disable my wireless connection on my powerbook and connect directly to either router I can't connect to the iTunes store OR Apple software update. All I get is a message saying there's a network problem, and to run Network Diagnostics. I do that, and diagnostics says "Hey, your network connection is just fine! Have a great day!!" Connected wirelessly, I can get to the iTunes store and update the computer with no problems.

I'm baffled. I'm assuming that the router is blocking some sort of traffic between us and Apple, but I can't imagine what, or why it would work when I'm connected to the same bloody network using wireless. I don't know if Rob has the same problem on his powerbook.

Bizarre.
