New Phone byt not a number in sight OK, I immersed my phone in Diet Cola, so my trusty +four year 7710 is no more. NOt so bad, but all my numbers are gone to. So if you know me, you have my email, can you email me your phone number please.
I will have my old number in a month, meanwhile, I will use a diff one, but will not publicise as wanna keep the old one. So its a bit crap really.
The up side, is that my contract is nearly up, so a new phone was on the cards. So my wife now has a nice 3G iPhone.
This is good as I get her iPhone (version 2) 16 gig thingimibobby.
So a few iphone quiestions (and answears for a stupid person please)
1. Is there a good book reader. If so what's it called and can one find books to download for it and what are the files called.
2. I read a lot of PDF's. Is there a PDF reader for the iphone, or a way to store/read them on the iphone?
anything really useful I should know?
thanks James

That went better than expected The convention co-operative effort at London Film and Comic Con went rather well.
LX, Odessey, Zombiecon, Novacon, Octocon and (gonzo)BSFA info was handed out as well as much chat and talk about this 'other corner' of fandom.
Some 200 books were removed by punters from our bookshelves, which needed much replenishment and we reckon we engaged with about 400 people over the two days all of whom were interested in books or wanted to know more about 'this type' of convention.
Many thanks to FJM The Fishlifters, Flickgc, League Of Fan Funds, ajshephard, frandowdsofa and johannesd, peter no LJ and Shef Skif for book donations. Especial thanks to lproven who treked to Bermondsly and delivered a haversack of books, proved the perfect replenishment on Sunday morning.
Thanks to Dave L and Dave M, who worked hard yesterday and Peter no LJ on Saturday. Joahnnesd was there all weekend continually handing out sweets and being friendly.
Also thanks to Joceylin Konrad-Lee who helped out for a good while, who was there with a final fantasy weapon.
and thanks to the fishlifters for the loan of their excellent (thanks KAY) book shelves, that fold up neat and are really very sturdy.
We had a lot of donations in our donation box, the organisers showmasters looked after us really very well and we ended up not having to pay a penny for over £250 worth of dealers space. Learned what neutral revenue means as we did that. I don't know the exact attendance figure, but must have been between 10 and 15 thousand people.
We're looking now at the BIG ONE - collectormania in Milton Keynes in September. Again we need volunteers to help on the stand and we need more books. It worked amazingly well. Only met about half a dozen people who have been to one of these cons.
Collectormania is a different kettle of fish, the largest SF event in the world really, the shopping centre gets a quarter of a million people through their doors on a normal weekend, this is up to half a million to 600,000 on the collectormania weekends.
again thanks to all who gave us books, it really helped

fanzine stuff I am still looking for donations of books - did you know that? To promote SF at an LX Table.
meanwhile, I wrote about one day in our honeymoon for File 770 and you can see why 3 weeks was amazing. Its about sports though. I also discuss the Fanzine Hugo's with editor MIke Gleyer. http://efanzines.com/File770/File770-153.pdf
London still excites me and here in Drink Tank I write about a busy pair of saturdays. http://efanzines.com/DrinkTank/DrinkTank173.pdf
While heading down to Bristol seems very worthwhile, especially if a comic expo is on.
http://efanzines.com/DrinkTank/DrinkTank171.pdf
I wrote about tanith lee for JOhn Coxans procrastinations, but the rest of the zine is very good. http://efanzines.com/Procrastinations/procrastinations05.pdf
Reveiws to beat the band appeared in prism, the zine of the BFS and I have written some things for the BSFA, so I await the magic that is DTP and HTTP.
was interested to see that an article went from that, to a letter to a discussion at conrunner, seems like Novacon may be about to look at another hotel.

On the Scrounge I am promoting LX and a couple of other cons at a big event in a few weeks time.
One of the things I am looking to do is have a Book shelf with of all things, SF Books on them.
These might be free to punters, or a nominal donation, but our target market are people who like books, so it may help to identify them and also it gives the right impression about what we are about. Books. (OK I might have a few graphic novels and some fantasy and even Horror too and are indeed welcomed as Donations.)
I have started gathering some, but I thought I would ask further afield.
I have a car, work in Paddington in central London or Heathrow, will be at the Tun, live in Croydon, have spies everywhere (OK that's a Lie) but I do have people involved in various places.
So if anyone has any books they don't want, and yet are OK books do advise please and I will arrange IF I CAN to collect or meet and take away. (I have a wheelie suitcase and surprisingly empty garage)
Tun is a good start.
anyhow, thanks. James

comics BBC 4 Today; Phillip Pullman and Graham Kibble-White were on this morning talking about the new comic DFC. I had heard about it ages ago (somewhere) and have signed up, first issue pops through the door sometime at the end of the month. Still time to sign up in time. There was also a number of artists promoting it at Bristol Comic Con, as they have contributed.
Its a Random House project I think.
Pullman is writing a script that he said he is basing on Storm Nelson in some way, from the Eagle comic. http://www.thedfc.co.uk/ is the website and subscription is required, it won't be available in newsagents/shops. (which is disappointing as I am sure there would be justification of listing it in Diamond for COMIC shops at least)
meanwhile, is anyone going to Cheltenham this evening, I am working a late and cannot make it.
I am looking forward to the new Captain Britain and MI 13 comic, from Marvel Comics, its being written by Paul Cornell. You can see a preview here: http://www.marvel.com/news/comicstories.3546.Preview~colon~_Captain_Britain_and_MI~colon~_13_%231
Its out today so maybe pop round to the comic shop.

[Link] | Today, I got a birthday present from my wife, some artwork. Comic artwork, but not just any old artwork, but stuff I loved very much as a kid, and at teh height of my adulation for the science fiction strips in 2000 AD.
She got me a page from TOP DOG, a story in the 1991 Judge Dredd annual, I would have been 16, it had a Jamie Hewlett cover and was a good one, the story was a cross over between Dredd and Johnny Alpha, and she got me a full colour page of it by Colin McNeil.
She also got me a page from Prog 611, jan 1989, from the Hondo City Judge Dredd story line, with Dredd fighting sadu, again full colour, when most of the comic was black and white. I loved the stories where Dredd met other judges, and McNeil's version of the Hondo City Judges was awesome. Although Simpson's Banana City and Dillon's Emerald Isle judges are also fav's.
I have looked at them for hours, they are so detailed and intricate.
Good times, falling into comic books to escape the realities of life...

The London Zine Symposium is a annual event where people interested in zines, small-press, comics and/ or radical culture can get together, buy or sell zines and share ideas with each other. The idea is to build a stronger DIY network and community by having people meet up, chat, maybe participate in a workshop or two but definitely have a good time.
Sunday 27th April is the day of the Symposium but there will also be an exhibition of zine artwork at Pogo cafe throughout the month of April. Full details are on the exhibition page. Where is this year’s zine symposium
It is happening at the very cool Rag Factory which lies just off Brick Lane in East London. It’s at 16-18 Heneage Street. A google map of the area showing the venue is here.
a diary date for From Hell Fans Eddie Campbell Signing and beer in pub afterwards. http://blog.myspace.com/index.cfm?fuseaction=blog.view&friendID=147127809&blogID=360019886 The day: Sunday 3rd August 2008 The time: 1.30pm to 3.30pm The Place: Page 45 Nottingham.
and finally remember that next week, the 3rd of May is free comic book day, http://freecomicbookday.com/ There is a store locator on there, although I know my local, A Place in Space is a big FCBD supporter yet they are not listed, so check your local shop out. Hellboy and All Star Superman are good reads, esp for free.

Journey Planet Chris Garcia and myself attempted to edit and publish a Fanzine in an hour as an Orbital programme item. It went well, but an hour was not enough and despite terrific help and efforts we didn't get as many printed as we hoped, its rough and ready and its available now as a PDF (5.2 meg) to download on efanzines.com
here to be precise: http://www.efanzines.com/2008Orbital/index.htm
There are some amazing contributions including:
An interview with Hugo Nominee John Scalzi about Fanzines and Blogs. Sketches that Neil Gaiman originally drew in 1990 that appeared in the fanzine Gerald. An article by Dave Langford about his involvement with an Eastercon. A discussion about Alice in Sunderland between Niall Harrison and Bryan Talbot from Torque Control. An personal perspective on the release of the Sandman comic. A selection of blog posts by tubewhore about the stations which get mentioned in Neverwhere.
Also in the hour we had contributions of art, photos and writing from Peter Sullivan, Christina Lake and Lillian Edwards, Mike Scott, Linda Wenzelburger, James Shields, Yvonne Rowse, Ian Sorenson, Jim De Liscard, John Coxan, Anna Raferty, Ang, Flick and Max.
many thanks to Orbital for their support, Bill Burns on efanzines.com and of course all contributors, we hope you check it out... and we accept no responsibility for the dalek slash...

mates on the lam I have some 'friends' who want to go to Orbital, last minute convincing obviously working, but they wondered if anyone I know was NOT going and if so, if they could buy their memberships at face value - which might be cheaper.
Does anyone know anyone selling memberships?
Anyone not going now and they once were, please leave a message here, or if you know me, drop me an email, please.

Not Calvin and Hobbes, exactly.

Tuesday 15 January 2008 11:30-12:00 (Radio 4 FM)
Jarvis Cocker explores the history of fanzines, small publications designed and produced by devotees of popular phenomena.
With the help of fanzine makers, collectors and experts, including Roger Sabin, Teal Triggs, Jon Savage and John Robb, Jarvis discovers the origin of fanzines in science fiction, long before the explosion of home-made fanzines during the punk rock days of the late 1970s.

warning convention price increase approaches. Conrunner is on in the Britannia Hotel in Wolverhampton over the weekend of the 28 - 29 June 2008
I am going.
Here is some info
Welcome to Conrunner 2008. This is the first of what is hoped to be a regular gathering of people interested and/or experienced in running fan (not-for-profit) conventions. The event is aimed primarily at the Science Fiction, Fantasy, Horror, Anime and Comics communities, but the skills, problems and solutions discussed probably apply to most not-for-profit conventions.
MOST IMPORTANTLY prices are still £30 at the moment, but are going up, so maybe join this week.

writings, I dunno if anyone reads this, but I realised I have written a lot this year and forget where exactly its been. ho-hum.
anyway in the last few weeks a few bits have gone online.
Hub issue 37 has a comic piece about League of Extraordinary gentlemen, the black dossier. http://www.hub-mag.co.uk/
I write about zombies and science fictional activities in askance 5, http://efanzines.com/Prior/Askance05.pdf
I take a very honest line about corsets, in Drink tank issue 150 ( lots of nice pics though) http://efanzines.com/DrinkTank/DrinkTank150.pdf
I wrote a report about Novacon in issue 151 of file 770 http://efanzines.com/File770/index.htm
I have a rankin - music - science fiction fix up piece with various assit contributors in issue 27 od Challenger, which will be online shortly here, paper version hit the vestibule floor a while back. http://www.challzine.net/
I am writing comic reviews for Prisim the mag of the British Fantasy society, in their December issue I had a review and reportage about a horror author event. http://www.britishfantasysociety.org/
Finally I highly recommend prolapse, issue 9 is on efanzines, and the letter column is like a whose who in regard to authors, let5 alone fans.
I would also mention another fanzine, where i think some of my best work appears, but its paper only and I don't want to frustrate ya.
we need more uk fanzines though...
if anyone ever does one, you know I'll give ya a submission.
