"That this smog of consensus is incompatible with the supposedly high-minded educational mission of colleges and universities is obvious. Yet higher education is at least as dedicated to the reproduction of Obama-ism as it is to conveying information. But academics are massively self-deceived about this, which makes it all the more disgusting and effective." |

| #642 : realism |
[Mar. 27th, 2008|03:30 am] |
realism is the art of the possible that doesn't stray from the facts at hand. the facts at hand are grim. the realist does not omit from our view the evils necessarily contained in every practical striving for existence -- to do good one must exist in the first place and discard any delusions of innocence. look at how men behaved in the past if you wish to know their hearts. are we free to submit our wills to a higher moral law? submitting to a higher duty in a world of opportunists leaves us exposed cries our instinct. in order to exist, we must follow the trend of speculation against our own moral currency. the norms we decide to follow are not descended from the heaven of ideas but are moored to the solid fact of tradition. prudently conforming to tradition brings reliability and reduced uncertainty when the other realists adopt the same standard of traditional norms. but the reality of a solid plurality of traditions inherited from history introduces contradiction in the procedures of realism. disagreement over diverging standards will foster tensions. even then, managing the realm of the possible without too much fuss is perhaps not impossible. lowering the standards is the classical solution here. different standards are indeed each relative to their respective histories, but a common minimal denominator can perhaps be extracted, leaving to personal preference matters of further ethical texture. this solution is not stable, though. creeping ontological inconsistency will arise out of the increasingly idiotic reduction of moral norms to principles of self-interest and cynicism when the genealogy of morals reveals the vacuum of contingent rule mechanisms with no inherent binding force men were content to sit on. wild thinkers formulate and preach what the young men who tear down the old dead order want to hear. the realist turns into a dreamer of different values, who with age will gain consistency and come to formulate a pure ideal removed from experienced reality. he will listen to his heart and not to his base instinct. the ideal he formulates as a horizon will exist as a radical possibility expressing a deeper truth than mere repetition of past experience. |

| #639 : false comparison |
[Jan. 17th, 2008|08:13 am] |
the perceived analogy between (1) hostility towards contemporary, underclass thugs with more or less foreign background and by extension towards low economic and human capital immigrants in general, and (2) 1930s antisemitism does not compute with me. i have never heard of jewish thugs terrorizing neighbourhoods and public transports. in general, the jews were resented and feared for entirely different reasons*. they were not feared because of their propensity to stab you with a knife for a wrong look.
*imaginary reasons. another difference. |

1) accidentally noticed existence of google books today. destabilizing explosive effect on my mind :) 2) i fear my underestimation of blaise pascal will manifest itself in more ways than one. example : he wore a belt studded on the inside with needles to mortify himself for having pleasure conversing with those who sought his counsels. this i had not anticipated. in the philosophical big picture, such details are irrelevant, of course. but, i am on my guard.
edit: A. ne pas parler de "vandalisme sociologique" demain. B. méthode de travail: la préparation se constitue en trois étapes: 1. la lecture 2. la fiche 3. la fiche de la fiche. c'est cette dernière étape qui fait toute la différence. |
