I'm not really sure... the site doesn't explain it at all.

it must have something to do with location and friends-of. maybe the more in-common friends we have in the same location, the more likely it is to be closer and boxed??

boxes around a name indicate another lj user who has had a minmap made. in fact if you click on the names with boxes around them it takes you to the exact post in which their mindmaps are posted.

I know that the friends that are friends with a lot of your friends are bigger, but I've never seen names in boxes before, so as to the reasoning for that, your guess is as good as mine.
