A very sad time for Peru [Aug. 17th, 2007|11:30 am]
[feeling | sad]

DSCF0267, originally uploaded by iwantchai.

Pictured above is the main church on the square in Pisco, Peru in January 2006 during a funeral procession. As you can see, funerals are very big events in Peru where it is less of a mourning and more of a celebration of the person's life. Often the entire town comes out on the streets and fills the church during such an event.

This was the case on Wednseday evening when the 8.0 earthquake struck. The church in Pisco collapsed around people commemorating the life of a passed loved one when the church collapsed around them. What remains of the church?

I've always said that I'm excited about the idea of earthquakes (being one that is studying geology), but never has one hit "close to home." I visited the cities of Lima, Chincha, Pisco, and Ica during my trip to Peru and realizing that most of what I saw in the smaller cities to the south (especially Ica and Pisco) is gone...that's hard. What remains is a devastated community left homeless, parentless, and desperately wishing their livelihoods had not been destroyed so suddenly.

Most of the buildings in Ica and Pisco were simple cinderblock structures that collapsed during the earthquake. It's really sad to see communities that already had so little now have even less.

I need to track down the friends I made during my visit...I hope they're all still okay!

AIDS/LifeCycle 2008 [Aug. 8th, 2007|12:00 pm]
Thanks to Andrew, I've finally committed to participating in the AIDS/LifeCycle
in June 2008. I'll be riding my bike with several thousand others from San
Francisco to Los Angeles over 7 days in an effort to raise money for AIDS
research and treatment.

I suspect that I'll attempt to organize a few fundraisers between now and then
in San Francisco to help me reach my goal. I'm excited about the ride and a
little nervous about the fundraising. $2500 is a lot to raise!

My number is 1910 (representing the 191 househould):

How I spent my Summer Vacation... [Jul. 31st, 2007|01:50 pm]
[feeling | accomplished]

Or at least that's what this entry feels like...

Boy, when was the last time I posted a real entry? It seems
like over the last year I've posted nothing but random pictures
at odd intervals. Thing is, once my journal became out of date
I had so many things to write that I didn't feel like I could
bring it up to date...so I just ignored it.

I'd like to start writing again, so this entry will serve as
a list (in no particular order) of memorable experiences from
the last 12 months. At least I've kept flickr updated:

Performed as a backup dancer in Bebe Sweetbriar's drag show to Shirely Bassey's
cover of Pink's "Get the Party Started."

Moved back to San Francisco.

Spent several days in Maui, thus completing my visit to all 50 states.

Drove cross country, yet again.

Visited Yellowstone (for the second time) and played tour guide for a
RV-based Geology class trip.

Painted my new room with yellow stripes.

Traveled to Belize with an Environmental Studies class at NorthEastern Illinois University.

Spent 15 days traveling Eastern Europe: Istanbul, Sofia, Beograd, Romania, Budapest, Bratislava, Vienna.

Traveled to Berlin.

Went kayaking in the Delaware River with Cody.

Visited Nick (my first ex) in New York City for the first time in 5 years.

Traveled to Bangkok.

Traveled to the Everglades, Ozarks, and Alaska.

Celebrated my grandparents' 50th anniversary.

Drove along the coast from San Francisco to Seattle.

Acquired a Shag print.

Adopted a loaner cat, Potato.

Watched the Simpsons movie.

Transferred to yet another school: San Francisco State University.

Currently am more tan than I've been in many years.

Still happily dating Nick...going on nearly two years.

Bought a new laptop (Asus 1UF).

Switched to AT&T and bought a new cellphone (Samsung Blackjack).

Earned Dean's List recognition for two semesters in a row.

Learned that Spin class is not such a dumb idea.

Re-acquainted myself with many old friends.

Dropped my Geography minor, but kept my Geology major.

Befriended several drag queens.

Have realized that I'm dangerously close to being considered a hipster.

Discovered the wonders of ArcGIS.

Oye, that's a lot. Surely I've missed a lot too...but at least now I
can feel like it's time to start with a clean slate. Start writing in
the present rather than always trying to keep up.
