I consider a dark fic one which is dark throughout. A dark-themed fic is one that, like Tolkien, has dark elements but not a dark ending. Still, these fics tend to be different in tone and event than my other FPS AU, so I have grouped them under another category.
So Small a Thing. My first attempt at a dark theme, fairly long (172 single-space manuscript page). 40 chapters. Boromir takes the Ring at Parth Galen, so dark elements at start, but not at resolution! Definitely adult content (sexual and non-con, bondage elements, interspecies and manslash).
In the Darkness Bind Them. My second attempt, short but dark, adult rated, slash, interspecies, non-con, rape, sadism, whipping. Definitely one to avoid if you do not enjoy dark fics.
